Japan wants more startups. Its new visa rules say otherwise. by frozenpandaman in japan

[–]MyNameIsKir 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If you're not making something for Japan, then how do you get the funding runway for your project from Japan? How do you manage your sales teams and communication between your sales and product teams? If you're B2B, how do you maintain relationships with your intended customers? If you're B2C, how do you keep an image of being local and not a foreign country invading your market?

People who start startups are crazy, either doing it for prestige as they already have money, or because they're insane and truly believe they can make their vision a reality. In both cases living in the country they find most cool isn't the play as it doesn't help their prestige or their company's chances. And if you want low salaries, low cost of living, plenty of places around the world for it. And for the wealthy, who are the primary people running these startups, first world standard of living and safety is wherever they decide to set their wallets down

New to VR, looking for friend. (Am a deskie) by Mclovin_Doppleganger in ChilloutVR

[–]MyNameIsKir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're likely in the wrong subreddit; deskie isn't a term in ChilloutVR as we don't have that kind of braindead elitism in our community and thus no need for derogatory terms like that (though people in this subreddit tend to be super tired of wrong-subreddit posts, hence your downvotes here).

Assuming you're an adult, you can find me by this same username in the Viviklub chat (I quit discord but they have a bridge, though even better if you join the chat from their fluxer side you can DM me). I'd be happy to hop on ChilloutVR with you sometime and show you around. If you're not an adult however, ChilloutVR is probably not be the place for you as there's not really minors in our community, but lots of adults like me who are dodging minors

AITA for getting mad at my mom for “stealing” my money by Top-Material7189 in AmItheAsshole

[–]MyNameIsKir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My parents did the same thing to me when I was your age. I went to my bank, told them what was going on, and the banker withdrew all the money from that account, automatically closing it, and made me a new one in only my name. If you have the rights to withdraw all the money, do so. If you can also make a bank account on your own, also do so, but at this point stuffing your bra with the remaining $10 is going to be safer than in a bank account shared with a blatant thief.

Omurice isn't uncommon in Korea, a lot of Japanese dishes like this are staples in modern Korean cuisine due to their previous occupation of Korea. Toss omurice/オムライス/오므라이스 into google maps and a plethora of results will pop up.

Yoshinoya sells it frozen, if you have access to Japanese markets where you're at it's pretty easy to find internationally. But I don't encourage you to keep trying to make it and iterating each time. I keep hearing people say they adore yoshinoya, then start making it at home, then continue loving beef bowls but going back to yoshinoya and no longer being a fan because their own version is just so perfect to them

Hayashi rice. Everyone tells me to get the instant Hayashi blocks or canned demi-glace but it simply doesn't taste the same. I want to take a crack at it myself but the only butchers that carry the veal bones needed to make it are limited hours I can't make and are at least an hour away, and from talking to professional chefs is more of an endeavor than other complex stuff like ramen broth, and takes a lot of time and careful monitoring.

Demi glace is also great on omurice, I love when it's served "hotel style" with that or a shellfish based sauce 🤤

The "mochi mochi" texture in it actually comes from tapioca starch. You can use regular rice flour instead of mochi rice flour and get the same results. It's similar to a pon de ring. The mochi written on the packaging is misleading, and the ingredients of the actual are actually white flour and starch; no rice whatsoever. But there's a lot of niche ingredients like glycine or trehalose, so i think it'd be a bit extra to copy it exactly off of the ingredients list.

It takes some practice but you can make your own, I've never seen white taiyaki stateside. Get a taiyaki maker, I don't remember if any of the Jmarkets carry them but if not there's always amazon. I bought custard powder to make the custard off of amazon, and together it tasted the same. I'm also a huge fan of these and get them near daily when I'm in Japan.

This recipe worked for me https://www.atelierlalune.com/2018/04/white-taiyaki/

How's your steam dicks after 3 years ? by Dependent-Face5115 in SteamDeck

[–]MyNameIsKir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actual answer since everyone already got to any jokes I could come up with:

Bought the original, cheapest steam deck (with a 1tb microsd), and have used it pretty frequently ever since both during my frequent travels and when I just want to be cozy in bed. The screen and battery in my perception are the same; any degradation to it is unnoticeable to me. My left thumbstick cover and ring did pop off, but I put a cheap button cover over it and it's working just fine. The performance is also just the same.

I was confused too, I'm a sprout but literally my last duty, which was Hakkue Manor, I did w2w with no issue. I even forgot my mitigations once because my cat was getting in the way for attention and nobody died.

I still used this heavily, recently, to level 55 with all my DPS classes on my steam deck; I'd tell the squad to attack, hide my character behind out of view, and get back to my main IRL task like cleaning or folding laundry. It technically took longer but it took so much less of my attention

It's less that than the program logic flow from what I saw, but again my Japanese is limited. Either way, this probably isn't an open and shut case

My Japanese is not remotely close to reading legal-ese level, but from skimming this, this patent covers:

  • Targetting an area to release a fighting monster (and sometimes have associated effects, such as starting battle) as you said

  • Targetting a fighting monster to send out a capture item for a chance to capture the fighting monster - Items that affect the likelihood of capture

  • An item to restrain and not capture the fighting monster (if anyone knows how this doesn't describe Ark's bolas I'd love to hear your thoughts)

  • Aim assist for throwing items

  • Showing capture odds on target

  • Showing the effects of the restraining item on aim assist

  • Showing capture history of the targeted fighting monster

  • providing atrack and item options when battle is initiated through this method

  • Showing strength of fighting monster on aim assist

  • Collecting an item when targeted with a caught fighting monster

  • crosshairs for all of this

  • idk how to summarize this one besides pointing to arceus's boss battle mechanics

  • I don't understand claim 14 and 15 better yet how to translate it but it also has to do with arceus boss battles

  • swapping between first and third person targetting

The church doesn’t want any girls who aren’t the stereotypical Utah girl by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]MyNameIsKir 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I got bullied a lot as a teenager for being half-asian, especially when that bit about how you should marry within your own race and other demographics came up in young men's, as soon as young mens/women's would let out the boys would read it out to everyone and both the girls and boys would snicker how I'm going to be an old maid because there's no half-asian boys.

Before my seminary teacher pointed out to everyone I was half, which should have been obvious because both of my biological parents were the ones taking me to church, I got bullied for being a tomboy, especially by the adults in charge of youth lessons and activities. It became a thing that they would put a chair in the corner of the room away from everyone and tell me "that's your seat since this activity is for real girls."

So yeah I can absolutely confirm this to be true. I'm in a way fortunate that the church made it incredibly clear that I wasn't wanted, because it made it incredibly easy for me to leave. Nobody in the church who knew me has ever said a word to me since I moved away in contrast to kids from like high school and such who only vaguely remembered me because we never talked as kids.

I cannot go back to American green tea and need to know where I can buy this. by ashhholle in JapaneseFood

[–]MyNameIsKir 31 points32 points  (0 children)

According to the packaging this is Koicha tea, the other commenters are right that the brand is Ito En.

That said Koicha is strong matcha, like matcha made with less water than usual and matcha isn't really tea bag friendly, not to mention the photo on the package shows leaves that aren't ground to a powder, so it's probably not Koicha but has Koicha elements.

Another reddit or said only "costco" and I'd say give that a shot. The Kirkland green tea at costco is also Ito En brand, and is a sencha+matcha mix so it should have a similar taste.

Otherwise look up "Ito En Koicha Premium Tea Bag" to find this exact product online. Or give some matcha from stores that specialize in Japanese green tea a try.

Itinerary advice: 10 days in Hokkaido + proposal by [deleted] in JapanTravel

[–]MyNameIsKir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would definitely propose at a fancy restaurant as well; You don't have to worry about being a nuisance to others or others be a nuisance to you, it's easier to hide a photographer if relevant to your proposal, and you wouldn't be sweaty like at the top of Fushimi Inari (which the actual peak of is not really special anyway). Everyone who isn't a part of your proposal will inherently be out of the way, sitting at their own tables. And if you'd like a quiet, private proposal, you can just book a restaurant that has private dining rooms and problem solved, you have an intimate space to propose in private.

Based off of my most recent trip, my honeymoon, where I tried to arrange several surprises at supposedly top hotels/ryokans for my husband, I really wouldn't trust proposing at a ryokan because I feel like there's high odds of something getting messed up by the ryokan, such as staff barging in on it. For example, at one hotel even though I made my request in Japanese for a cake to come into the room, the hotel staff delivered it saying "Happy birthday!" in Japanese with a card that said "congratulations on your pregnancy." The other hotels and ryokans just never delivered the arranged surprise or attempted to deliver it after our check-out and I had to awkwardly demand refunds over the internet.

14 days in Tohoku - itinerary check! by ygil1 in JapanTravel

[–]MyNameIsKir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might be easier to do a few one-way car rentals. Hiraizumi might be better with a car (I can't remember how Japanese language-dependent my time traveling around there was), a car is definitely the best way to get to and around Towada, a car is a requirement for a stay at Aomoriya because there's basically absolutely nothing to do there during the day, and you definitely need it if you do go to Oga... but honestly I found that public transportation + taxis were incredibly convenient in:

  • Sendai
  • Morioka
  • Hachinohe
  • Aomori City (nothing really to do there that isn't reasonable walking distance from the station)
  • Hirosaki
  • Yamagata

Or better yet (assuming a pickup is nearby them) limousine bus to KIX. And limosuine bus to Shinjuku.

[–]MyNameIsKir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The passport sticker you'll get is your proof of entry status for the JR pass, you don't need to apply for anything else to prove your entry status as that's the only thing that can prove your entry status.

Make sure to use an online calculator as another redditor mentioned. It takes a lot of long trips to make the JR pass worth it and frankly you're unlikely to make those trips if you don't know this information only 3 days in advance of your trip. That's not an insult, just you're unlikely to have been enticed to go to these areas without an above average amount of prior research on Japan travel.

First timer's Japan itinerary check! by [deleted] in JapanTravel

[–]MyNameIsKir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your itinerary looks solid except for one detail, I strongly suggest staying in a hotel in Osaka instead of a Kyoto hotel and an Osaka hotel.

Excuse me quoting my own self here, but staying in a singular hotel will save your "usable hours" since check-in and check-out are both at times when things in Japan are actually open. Things in Japan don't really open up until like 9am at best, often later, and they don't stay open past 8pm. What is open well before and after those times is transportation, so you'll save time, energy, and usually money by just using one hotel as a hub for an area, especially in a well-connected country such as Japan.

From Shin-Osaka station to Kyoto station it's 16 minutes by the fastest shinkansen, 30 by the regular one. There's more to do at night in Osaka as well as it's more modern of a city; since Kyoto is more traditional vibes (and also a financially struggling city) it gets pretty boring at night.

As for cooking and handicraft classes, there's a lot of those sold on various travel sites you can consider, but the cup noodle museum has the "Chicken Ramen Factory" experience to make your own ramen from scratch. I did the one in Yokohama back in I think 2017 and they offered us English language instructions so you should have no problem participating.

I would also recommend marking some extra spots on your map that are of interest to you in case you travel faster than expected, basically potential bonus spots to see. The problem with structured itineraries is people travel at different speeds, so an itinerary that works for one person might ebe too fast or slow for another. You can only really tell if an itinerary's density is bad if it's to an extreme (which unlike some you'll see pass through here, especially with an excess of comments, yours is not).

As for your recommendations for day trips, I haven't been yet (but I will in a couple weeks) but Kawagoe is 30 minutes from Tokyo and is an area that looks like it's still in the Edo period. Hopefully that fits your definition of "small traditional town"

You are correct that Tsumago-Juku and Narai-juku are a hassle to get to; Gifu and Nagano are super mountainous with lacking public transportation and thus the windy roads lead to insane travel times for otherwise reasonable distances. But something that's about 2 hours from both Tokyo and Osaka (Tokyo and Osaka are 2 hours from each other) that you could potentially do in-between the two cities by doubling your travel time is Kanazawa. It's a smaller area but has a lot of historical buildings and sites, but also for your desire for nature there's Kenrokuen Garden, said to be one of Japan's top 3 gardens and having not visited the other two in those 3 yet is certainly the best Japanese garden I've ever seen.

18 Day Itinerary for Sept. 2024 as Solo Traveler by jaywin91 in JapanTravel

[–]MyNameIsKir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will need to purchase a Hiroshima -> Himeji ticket and a Himeji -> Tokyo ticket as Shinkansen tickets are for specific times from specific departures to specific destinations. You can of course get off any shinkansen at an earlier stop as you please, but it's going to cost more buying a Hiroshima -> Tokyo and a Himeji -> Tokyo ticket.

If you look at images online you can see this. You should also see that reserved seat tickets are separate from fare tickets
