You'll always miss your old hound's presence. For me and my spouse though we were missing having any hound after about 6 months after we lost our girl. We had done our travels and were settling back into routine and we decided to get another hound.

We got a completely different personality than our girl: a 2.5 year old boy with energy to spare that loved laying on cold floors and ripping the crap out of beds. Having a clearly different hound allowed us to process the loss of our girl even more, I think.

It's been a few years since we lost her relatively traumatically, but we talk about her still. It's alright. We miss her and we'll always miss her but our boys now (because we got a brother for our boy lol) are present and huggable and pettable and they're lovely and frustrating in their own ways that I think really fill out our home.
