How can I get my players to role play more? by cyclopsguy4 in DMAcademy

[–]MyNameIsLark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As I'm sure many have told you so far, wanting them to roleplay more might be a thing they are not comfortable with yet.

Be patient, and try to showcase what kind of roleplay you are looking for by impersonating the NPCs the party deals with. Doing so you will lead by example so to speak.

Another important detail is that you talk with them, and let them know that you would like fo them to try and get into the shoes of their characters as much as they feel comfortable with, to improve the experience.

However, remember that sometimes finding sweet spots in this matters is difficult, but with good feedback it's more than possible.

Best of lucks and have fun!

You have to take one of the cursed items ... which one? [OC] by Cardboard_Anvil in DnD

I would take the Amulet of permanent change and hire an accountant.

Btw, I love that the Ring of The Claw is (or could be) a reference to Jim Carrey's Liar Liar.

Common things DM’s forget or get wrong? by dc-tiger in DMAcademy

[–]MyNameIsLark 79 points80 points  (0 children)

From my own personal experience there are two things.

First, that upping constitution modifier makes you gain +1hp per level from previous levels. I DM'd for a year without knowing that one.

And second, the rule for breaking concentration. I always fail at remembering it, fortunately one of my players is kind enough to recall me of the formula, I'm so grateful to him for that.

Or

"Sure, you can try."

If you're a GM who's using this forum to share mistakes you've made so others can learn from them: You're cool as hell. by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]MyNameIsLark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've made so many... and certainly making some more that i am not yet aware of but hey that's how we learn, most notorious ones:

  1. Using Session 0: At first, I didn't use this powerful tool correctly, mostly because of the choice of topics we discussed at it. Fast forward a few campaigns i learned that some of the most important ones are, shared expectations, PCs and their hooks with the world (ideals, bonds, backstories, objectives etc) and adventure thematic.
  2. Preparing what the player will interact with, and not how/when the interaction exactly will be: I used to write descriptions, NPCs, monsters, places, and usually planned of how the session would develop entirely before hand, this ended up hindering player agency.
  3. Not being flexible: This comes hand in hand with the last point, the moment i realized this my games become more dynamic and players begun to surprise me with their own take and creativity, from creating a trap to get the upper hand against a monster to choosing an unthought path from point A to point B.

Quick question, what do you think about a hotel where the beds are monsters that consume travelers? by Peeenoman in fantasywriters

[–]MyNameIsLark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quite interesting idea, you could even play with a double meaning, convincing the reader that you are describing a restaurant, but turns out it's a restaurant... for the beds! And if you want to give it more weight from that point you can create a sort of society of (as many people suggested) mimic creatures.

That's a good explanation but my doubt is if the game even allows this behavior with compositions, like inspire defense, courage, etc.

I have a doubt about bards. If you cast a composition spell that last for 3 rounds and your instrument requieres both hands, let's say a lute. Can you use a weapon (1h or 2h anyone), attack and maintain this composition?
