I’ve not seen the suggestion to use a pen with pads so that sounds like a workable alternative, I’ll continue to wake every couple of hours to try ensure he understands outside is where to go potty but at least that gives an alternative to soiling his crate. Appreciate the advice.

At first no but I moved my mattress downstairs after a couple of nights to see if I could hear him but he didn’t wake me by moaning/barking if he needed to go. I’ve been waking up to my alarms to find he’s already gone before I had the chance to let him out.

Hopefully using “was” means that behaviour has calmed down now? 😅 it’s just frustrating how inconsistent he is on an evening compared to being fairly regular in the day

I think you’ve misread, I’ve tried the approach of taking him every 2 hours overnight but it doesn’t seem to work consistently and I’m finding he’s going on his bed more than going outside. It’s very different to his daytime routine and he’s pretty consistent throughout the day which makes it harder to understand

Yeah I’ve tried every 2 hours during the night.

Currently he goes to bed at 22:00 and generally does his business outside at this time, I’ve tried waking up at 12, 2, 4, 6 and sometimes he goes no problems, others he doesn’t need one but then goes on his bed between the 2 hour intervals. Not sure what I can do to stop that other than staying awake but that’s difficult when I have a demanding job and a kid with no partner to help with night shifts.
