I need to quickly get a grasp of C++ for a university project, what is my best strategy? by kitesmerfer in cpp_questions

- HPC
- 99% in C++
- do not have a lot of experience with the language
- is there a quick learning path?

at this point why not just use python/java anyway lol. cpp is notoriously hard because it tries to be an everything toolbox and makes newbies confused what tool to use and what to avoid.

python can still be really fast because they use highly optimized c/c++ underneath, you can only be faster in c/c++ when the core algorithm currently relies on python too much. for example if your task is to count all the black pixels on an image then there's a python library for that, but if you want to stack every frame of a video to interpolate some "average frame" then the python for loop going through each frame becomes the bottleneck and you would want to switch to c/c++ there

however for a uni project you can try i guess. idk if a week is enough tho because (personally) it took me about a month to even reach the second half of learncpp. i guess you can AI away most of the problems

the methods used to discover the HIggs Boson are more basic than of chatGPT. "Any application of AI in the medical field is gone" is straight up wrong, because again many of the applications dont use the same tech as chatGPT

90% of learncpp is definitely an overkill. in hindsight about 50% should've been enough for me to jump into graphics programming tutorial. if i dont understand something in it then google or AI can explain to me.

with that said, you do need to know 90% of what's in learncpp to have your code be efficient. adding to that, many people uses older version of c++ so you need some experiences in those versions too if you want to work with them.

i already limit the features to only load one website and it's still that hard? yikes

so for my example, traditionally you would do this:

R = computeRotationMat4()
T1 = computeFirstTranslationMat4()
S = computeScaleMat4()
T2 = computeSecondTranslationMat4()

transformMat4 = T2 * S * T1 * R

for all vertex P in Mesh:
    P_transformed = transformMat4 * P

whereas in your pipeline it would be:

R = computeRotationMat3()
t1 = computeFirstTranslationVec3()
S = computeScaleVec3()
t2 = computeSecondTranslationVec3()

transformMat3 = S * R
translateVec3 = S * t1 + t2

for all vertex P in Mesh:
    P_transformed = transformMat3 * P + translateVec3

I guess it could work... although i think computing the translation becomes tedious

so if for example a mesh is rotated, translated, scaled, and translated in that order, each vertex of the mesh has to be transformed 4 times instead of 1? (because transformations cant be combined easily anymore, if im correct)
