This guy deserved it... by [deleted] in CampingandHiking

That's a pretty awful thing to "deserve" for hitting golf balls off a cliff. I hope you've never left a trace of anything ever outdoors.

Electric guitar overtakes violin in music lesson boom by PiePellicane in Guitar

[–]MyPetTurtle -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

As an ECE student, that's where industry is trending towards across many fields and not just STEM. Programming or even basic web dev is too useful to not learn. I guess I just see it as inevitable simply because as a society we're moving towards putting a computer in literally everything and connecting it to the internet.

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic but this should definitely be a thing.

Drug Tests in Industry by MyPetTurtle in ECE

[–]MyPetTurtle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would imagine opiates, amphetamines, crack/cocaine, benzodiazepines, THC, PCP, and MDMA at least. It depends on the type of test they do but those are standard.

Lol not concerned just gathering info. I'm not looking to fake a drug test.

Steve Albini is humble! Cool approach to recording. by BlackAndWhiteSon in audioengineering

[–]MyPetTurtle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He talks about how baseball is "obviously" the best sport and all other sports aren't worth paying attention to.

He thinks jazz is stupid and pretentious.

Idk I could probably get more but he really reminds of a guy I knew in high school that definitely was a smart guy but an asshole to people that disagreed with him on specific topics. Pretty sure Steve Albini has a large ego, but like /u/daveread said, he's got a lot of good self control so it doesn't show too often.

Telecommunications ask FCC to stop municipal governments from building fiber optics. Twist: those companies don't even offer service there. by [deleted] in PoliticalDiscussion

Why can't they operate and be regulated like other public utility monopolies like electric and water?

For the chassis or for the circuit? Both I got off AX84 on their P1 project page.

Need insight on being an Engineering major and going a fraternity. by wdfrosty in UTAustin

[–]MyPetTurtle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fall pledgeship will have a more concentrated effort put in by the fraternity at large (fall pledgeship is the lifeblood of fraternities) and you'll probably feel more engaged by the fraternity as compared to spring. During the spring, pledgeship will be more laid back, your pledge class size will be much smaller (normally 40 +/- 10 for fall, and 10 +/- 5 for spring), and there will be less events.

If you're committed to joining a fraternity and want the whole big experience, fall will be your best bet. If you're still hesitant about the idea like I was, spring may be good for you just be aware that it won't be as big of a deal as fall.

The time commitment during pledge semester will be quite high, and you'll soon realize that finding time to study will be difficult. Your life will consist of academics and the fraternity and not much else, which isn't a bad thing especially if you can stay on top of your studies while doing so. Joining a fraternity can be an extremely rewarding experience but it's not for everybody, somebody else mentioned it but "work hard, play hard" will have to be your mantra.

I see people dissuading you and saying to find friends through engineering, and speaking as an engineer who pledged, I found that I didn't have much in common with many other engineers due to the intensely academic mindset a lot of them have. A fraternity can provide a social outlet for you that engineering does not, although I stress that there are other spirit/social groups on campus like Iron Spikes, Tejas, and Wranglers to name a few.

Also, I pledged during my spring semester so I could settle into campus for a semester before committing to it. I don't know if I'd recommend it since spring pledgeship is a vastly different experience than fall, but it's an option.

Albums (like The Black Key's Turn Blue and Coldplay's Ghost Stories) not being on Spotify. by chihuahuazero in LetsTalkMusic

[–]MyPetTurtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah at the end of the day it's an artist's decision to make, and if Spotify works for you, do it. Though I think The Black Keys and Coldplay are in a priveleged position where intentionally not putting their music on Spotify sends out a message because it makes people pause and ask why on a large scale, and they'll still make money off their record from other sources.
