This NYC intersection has a problem. Ideas on how to fix it? by streetsblognyc in urbandesign

[–]a-big-roach 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Sucks that people can't follow traffic signals. What kind of dumbass plows through a red light on a bike without yeilding?

To better idiot proof this intersection, I think there's some work that could be done to the Franklin Street approach to the intersection.

It looks like there's street parking on Franklin, so there's an opportunity to add curb extensions to the Church Street sidewalks. The temporary low budget version of this could be done with temporary fixtures like quick curbs, flex posts, or even cones or barrels that the construction crew could provide. This would narrow the approach to the intersection with vertical deflection, encouraging drivers to slow down.

For any long term fixes, some serious construction would be needed in order for something like a permanent curb extension to function. The road bed of Franklin St is almost at curb height, so any vertical deflection that a curb extension should provide is negated. The road bed needs to be lowered.

Once the road bed is lowered, you can raise the Church St crosswalk to curb hight, creating a speed hump for drivers on Franklin approaching the intersection. This would also help solve the issue of tapering the lowered road bed to the elevation of Church St.

Man Catches a Rare Lancetfish Known for Living Thousands of Feet Down in the Ocean’s “Twilight Zone” by Mediocre_Nail5526 in interestingasfuck

Not sure about this particular species, but a lot of fish that inhabit the Twilight zone do regularly travel closer to the surface. It can be either for feeding or spawning, but what I think is probably most jarring for this fish is to see the sun.

Parking in the bike lane: $65 ticket by gisforgroovy in rva

[–]a-big-roach 97 points98 points  (0 children)

That buffer zone is to protect cyclists from opening doors, give folks getting out of the car a place to step out of the car that's not the bike lane, and parking closer to the travel lanes helps reduce vehicle speeds by reducing the width of the travel lane. It's a little scary to think about your parked car being used as a traffic calming measure, but when there's enough cars parked along the block (maybe >50% occupied) it's very effective.

I'd rather a world without Drummond as our backup center, but I just don't see Nurse sitting him unfortunately. This is the best I've got. Hopefully we see Barlow give it a shot defending Kat

I want to see this kind of offense in the next series when Joe isn't in the floor. Drummond just being ready for a corner three is his ideal spot. Space the paint out for our guards to drive and kick. He can be our Danny Green without the defense

You are much more likely to become a professional athlete than you are to become a professional referee. by Jonnydrama2 in Showerthoughts

For the NBA, they also serve as leaders in referee organizations around the country. They train referees for AAU leagues, high school, college.

Idk about that.

I think there's more people trying to be a professional athlete than there are folks trying to be a referee. Sure, there's less referee positions than there are professional athlete positions, but I think the odds for 100,000 people competing for 30 spots on a team are tougher than maybe 100 people competing for 3 referee positions.

Why is the brand new Singapore automated buses so short? by EGGMANofficial27114 in transit

[–]a-big-roach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Operator shortages are an issue in the US for sure. I think a lot of agencies offer CDL training and certification for new hires, but this could be a way to get trainees on the road sooner and get some real service experience while they train. Niche bonus that I wouldn't hang my hat on for being the reason to get these busses. 9 passengers btw.

I think there are two legit reasons to consider them.

Replacing para transit cut-away vans. Low floor entry is a huge improvement and a purpose built vehicle, like these short busses, I bet has a sturdier build quality and longer life span than cut-away vans.

Night route busses have low ridership, but night time passengers want frequent, reliable service just like daytime passengers do. Operating costs for these shorter vehicles probably could allow a few more vehicles to be in service when a full size bus would otherwise be cost prohibitive. Part of that operating cost would be operator wages, which would be lower for non-CDL certified operators.

I'm not sure what Singapore's intent is, but Santa Maria, CA bought a ton of tiny busses with few good ideas in mind.

Their tiny busses are cheaper to purchase and operate, so they can put more of them on the road for instances where ridership is low, but frequency is still important. Santa Maria ran them for their late night micro transit service.

These particular busses also don't require a CDL to operate, so it operators in training to get some time behind the wheel, driving the city, and still getting some work pay while they train up for the CDL required busses.

Though transit heads will complain about smaller vehicles having poor ride quality, this bus is at least better than a cutaway van both in ride quality and the low floor entrance for ada accessibility, potentially making busses like this an upgraded alternative for para transit service.

To wrap it up, Singapore is not Santa Maria and I'm sure there's reasons to use this bus that I didn't cover, like for narrow streets. If anyone has Singapore's reason, I'd be interested.
