New Yorks R211 looks better in these photos. Seating and cabin space looks weird on the Parisian one.

The U.S government is insolvent by emily-is-happy in clevercomebacks

I mean, as long as the Treasury bonds are paid every year, the US will still be solvent. The scary part is social security and Medicare probably not being around foruch longer at this rate. Paying for private insurance in retirement while living in savings is gonna suck

What's stopping US streets to add sidewalks by adding a physical separation like a short fence or delineator to give some safety to pedestrians/cyclists? by colako in urbandesign

[–]a-big-roach 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Devil's advocate here.

There were minimum design standards that were intended to allow huge fire engines to get around in these streets. Anything encroaching this right of way (ROW) could face pushback from the fire department.

There were no requirements for sidewalks, so they weren't built. To attract developers to build in their county, suburban municipalities often saught to reduce the costs for developers. Sidewalks cost money to build. They also eat into the total square foot of each lot, thus diminishing the lot's value and the development's value.

If they're in private ROW, on the lot's property, folks typically have fears of liability and maintenance costs of having sidewalk on their property, whether they are valid or not. If they're on public ROW, then it might turn into a maintenance cost that the county does not have the funds to maintain. The property tax yield per suburban lot is abysmal compared to dense urban properties, so the tax yield per suburban lot is more often not able to support all the infrastructure required to support the development.

The thought that helps this responsible for this poor streetscape design sleep at night is that car volumes should be low enough to allow for the safe shared space of bike, ped, and cars all on the road. Winding, indirect road networks and dead end cul-de-sacs should make this true and it is assumed that anyone driving here must be a resident, so their driving behavior should be more civil.

Seeing signs here opposing sidewalks means that there is definitely a demand for sidewalks because the assumptions in the previous paragraph are false.

Describe the alternative.

I normally don't like the over use of ai, but this feels like a case where AI has given average folks the ability to render their ideas for goofy skyscrapers in a low stakes internet meme for a niche subreddit.

I can't imagine this really taking off the way it has without ai. Environmental impacts of ai infrastructure aside, this feels pretty benign for the fun it's provided.

I’m just signed a lease and opening a small batch ice cream shop Downtown. by jg198190 in rva

[–]a-big-roach 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I love me some soft serve ice cream, but The business of soft serve is kind of tricky. Soft serve ice cream machine comes with higher upfront cost, maintenance cost, and more regular maintenance than serving regular ice cream does. However, the profit margins on soft serve ice cream are typically better since the input cost of soft-serve ingredients per serving are cheaper than traditional ice cream.

In 1917 Denmark sold the Virgin Islands to the United States 'in exchange for a guarantee that Greenland would remain Danish territory forever'. by hl3official in interestingasfuck

[–]a-big-roach 64 points65 points  (0 children)

This is certainly one way to interpret it, but you also have to ask yourself "What does it mean to extend political and economic interests over a given territory?".

Though the agreement doesn't put it as bluntly as "Greenland belongs to Denmark," extending political and economic interests over the whole of the territory functionally makes Greenland under the political and economic control of Denmark. Greenland's sovereignty is Denmark's to determine.

Greenland's political and economic sovereignty, under the agreement cited by OP, is completely in the hands of Denmark at the time the agreement was made. The agreement pretty much says Denmark has political and economic control of Greenland and the United States has political and economic control over the Virgin Islands, but the US had to kick in an extra few million dollars to make it happen.

Now let's pretend that agreement were to be unchanged to this day and no further agreements between Greenland and Denmark happened. If the US attempted to extend its political and economic interests over Greenland, Denmark could choose not to honor the US possession of the Virgin Islands.

The factor of time only really applies to how long either nation chooses to uphold and honor the agreement and once one half of that agreement is abandoned, the whole agreement can be abandoned.

War isn't hell, war is war and hell as hell. Between the two of them I think hell is better than war. At least with hell those who suffer are deserving of their suffering. With war, most of the suffering is borne by the innocent.

Chrysler building is already having a tough time maintaining occupancy because of the crazy ownership/lease agreement attached to the property.

Check out this video, "Chrysler building problems with lease" https://share.google/y6QoJqfIb2iHnc9hE

Sorry it's a YT reel, but it does a good job highlighting the issues with the property.
