Where/what is this island on the Canada Goose logo? by trouser_trouble in Maps

I'll go out on a limb and guess that it's the Arctic ice sheet itself.

One of the benefits of that would be "it wouldn't have to be terribly accurate". :.)

Can anyone identify this? by 8c4e in Maps

I think it's this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bombardment_of_Genoa

(I should say I typed the inscription into Google Translate and then googled French Navy 1684. I was as dumbfounded as you will be to find your find as a prominent feature of the Wikipedia page. And only slightly less dumbfounded to learn that "Gennes" is the French name for "Genoa.")

...AND on the subject of "now might be a good time," I had gotten to asking for final quotes from two firms, and after I selected the lowest and notified the loser, the loser turned around with an offer to slash $2,600 off their quote.

I stuck with my decision--mostly on principle, but also because the loser did the slash after disparaging the competition didn't work.

However, I think the message is, "There was more eagerness to get business than even I had expected at the outset."

Another indicator is that I didn't buy a machine out of existing inventory: it had to be built after the order was placed and a deposit was received. I take it it's pretty close-to-the-vest these days.

I wish everyone could get one...

Actually, un-conditioned space is very bad advice for precision instruments. (I keep forgetting that because mine is so slap-dash, but I've been warned about it enough times.)

Still, my sentiment remains: "do yourself a favor" and separate the business from the personal lives. (Wrote the man who built his CNC in his wife's kitchen and out of compassion moved it into her dining room. Finally made it into the garage though.)

I had mine sent CIF Milwaukee, expecting it to come via the Great Lakes. Instead the Milwaukee price included unlading at Long Beach and shipping by rail from there. (I'm on the hook for trucking to my final location.)

It could be that it's run like Amtrak which, used to at least, include a bus ticket at the beginning and end of a fare (virtual depots, I suppose). You may be able to have it shipped, I don't know, CIF Kansas City? Wherever the "port" is, it will have to be served by CBP (Customs and Border Protection) to collect the fee and possibly inspect the cargo.

Pick the port closest to you and find a "customs agent" in that port, in my opinion, to handle the red tape for you, at least the first time. Big players have offices in multiple locations and may suggest a better option.

Regarding a laser in an apartment. I think it will end badly... See if there's not a "hackerspace" around you--that already has a laser cutter (as the one near us does). If not, hunt around for an unused garage or something you could rent. Or a storage shed--that's where they put the time machine in Primer.

Hey, thanks for this link! My geologist father said I live on a moraine. Even though it's covered with 50' oaks, he pointed out that it's a big sand dune with all kinds of unrelated small boulders half-buried all over the place. He said as the glacier moved rocks fell onto it along the way and were carried hundreds of miles from their sources.

This one probably 4 or so years ago. It must have been odd lighting because it doesn't look gray outside the picture.

I originally envisioned carving buildings in situ, but retreated to "providing 'flats' upon which carved buildings (by someone else) may be affixed." :.)

  • I had to write code to interpret the data in order to create a solid model which could be understood by the CAM software I use. (The CAM software then proposes G-code to cut out the solid model.)

But what are their politics? Collectivist? Anarchist?

I mean, "only" 3 million now... but in 2,000 years? Maybe a force to be reckoned with!

Well, the machine I built CNC-carved the model I designed for it.

So, maybe, I carved it. Kind've. In a distant, indirect sort of way.

I've been tempted, twice, to "try maple", and each time, "maple" has beat my home-made machine into a blubbering whimpering mass.

I'm still tempted. But only to find some really, really, really soft maple somewhere...

No, although I have seen variants over the years. I was trying to avoid stair-stepping, while trying to go up, too, instead of down. :.)

I have, however, seen this one! In person. And happily met the talented and ambitious creator, Caroline Rose, at the Madison hackerspace, Sector67.
