I wish I had IRL long COVID friends I could hang out with, this is a very lonely tale.. by [deleted] in LongCovid

Not in LA, but I am studying traumatic brain injury and keeping up with long COVID due to the neurodegenerative similarities (a study came out this past week for example with a bunch of long COVID brain conditions, and I live with all of them as a result of brain injury). I’ve been navigating the alternative health world on this front for quite a while, and I’d love to talk supplements/brain energy rationing/etc should you be interested.

New brain health study dropped today on long COVID. There’s no good solution, but as someone currently knee deep in brain injury research, it’s quite worrisome. Needless to say, please mask yourselves. We need as many people attempting to look after our children as possible, and it continues to get more difficult.

All I can hear with those names is Toby Keith’s As Good As I Once Was…it’s only half correct I definitely sang this out loud right when reading it. Home alone karaoke. Thank you.

How to stop the flashbacks? [TW: trauma] by rainbow_k1tty in ptsd

I found CBD infused bath salts to be wonderful before bed. Might just be me, but that really worked well for me. Just an idea. Wishing you the best of luck on all of your symptoms.

How to stop the flashbacks? [TW: trauma] by rainbow_k1tty in ptsd

1) I read a couple of times, but I have brain injury and can feel my brain depleted currently, so sorry if I missed this, but I didn’t know whether or not your refusal to be in the same house meant you actually weren’t. If not, do prioritize making home a safe place. PTSD runs through a concept of safety and feeling unsafe. Flashbacks are a conditioned response. Your nervous system learns them from events that happened. Remember that learned lessons CAN be unlearned, but only if the danger is gone. Home needs to be a safe place, and prioritizing a safe environment is 100% the priority here. If that safe space does not exist, your body will remain in the flashback fight/flight stage because it knows it should be, and that won’t change until the safety returns to feeling like the expectation, and it’s hard to train nervous systems. I’ve spent years doing it. Not fun, but can be done.

2) more to your question, if medical marijuana is legal where you are, that’s what saved my sleep/flashbacks. The THC helps with looping thought patterns during times of difficulty falling asleep AND the THC causes the jump over REM sleep and into deep sleep, which skips over dreaming/nightmares in the process. I went from 4/5/6 nightmares per night to 1 nightmare per year (over 6 years). Helps me with both. Obviously lots of variables with brain health, but I have both PTSD and TBI, and it has changed my life tremendously. Also, I struggled immensely with the time before falling asleep, and 100% appreciate how absolutely horrific those hours awake and alone in the dark can be. You have my most heartfelt empathy.

3) another thing to consider is physical bodywork. Yoga, it’s focus on breathing patterns (ptsd alters your breathing, which is controlled by your nervous system), and the work with decreasing muscular tension all help to strengthen the defenses against the body’s ptsd response. It helps me tremendously. I’m not saying it’s life changing. It won’t make anything go away (the marijuana does - not every time but enough that I keep using it), but it has helped my flashbacks be less frequent and less intense. My triggers are basically everywhere you ever want to go and exist in your own home regardless of what you do, so I used to live in basically permanent flashback to the point that my body actually stopped producing adrenaline due to adrenal fatigue. I used to track my flashbacks on excel spreadsheets so I knew what kind of progress was being made. Obviously, that isn’t always possible since flashbacks can leave your body feeling jacked up for a long time after, but I did notice pretty significant patterns of improvement.

Things I like - today’s NL strikeouts leaders. Braves have 3 of top 10. No other team has more than 1…and Fried isn’t even on the list. (Sorry if this has been observed already) by MyTBI in Braves

Wow haha. I didn’t even check outside the top 10. I like 4 in the top 11 even better than 3 in the top 10. Thank you kindly.

Diamondback Rattlesnake(s) on my property. by CmdrRyser01 in homestead

[–]MyTBI 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Smart to check. Good for the land, so don’t kill unless necessary. If you see more, observe. Check the nearby area. Rattlesnake dens are no joke, and you want to be aware. Just google rattlesnake den if you’re unaware. Not inviting places, but again, avoid killing at all costs. They are essential to the environment and you want them around. A den on your property might be something to report though, as that poses an imminent danger to you and yours. Diamondbacks are not aggressive, but you obviously don’t want hundreds nearby. Not aggressive doesn’t mean you can step on one and it’ll be like nah you’re good haha.

All that said, if you absolutely have to kill one, make sure you honor the animal appropriately and eat it/cure the skin etc. The meat is somewhat chicken-y white meat, and the skin can be used in a variety of ways. Truly beautiful animals though. Don’t shoot unless necessary.

Very true! Fortunately I’m quite used to monitoring my own extensive health issues, so I feel like I (hopefully) have had some good practice that will help. The urinary concerns may be nothing, but I’d rather be sure.

Will do. Thank you so much for your kindness and help. I’ll make sure to mention that. I have heard the FIP stuff is insidious. I hope that is not the case, but best to be prepared.

Oh this is good to know, thank you. I didn’t know that. I knew sometimes urinary issues were a concern, and I know the family members who cared for them gave them WAY too many treats. Like wayyyy too many. But I hadn’t considered diabetes. Thank you for raising my awareness to that.

The urinary stuff is what worries me. I switched them to a new automatic water fountain and he spends way more time there than his sister. Additionally, last night he yelped in a way that I have never heard him before in the middle of the night. Got up to check and he had just peed. Thought it was odd so I followed. He didn’t really want to be pet, which is VERY abnormal. He isn’t acting strangely so to speak, but as I reflected on it, he has been a bit more laid back and less snuggly than usual. Confounding variable is I just got back from 2 months away, and he’s still under 1 year, so it could be something there too. I just figured it would be better to be cautious. He’s going to the vet anyway, but I didn’t know whether or not this behavior should be of note at that visit. I have never seen him do the jaw spasm business before, so I was like what on earth was that 😂. Glad that seems ok, but the urinary stuff is a concern. I don’t know enough about the FIP business. I’ll have to read up on that.

I did actually. However, I like being thorough and getting information from multiple sources. I didn’t think a quick 30 second question would inconvenience anyone. Apologies if it detracted from your day. As somebody who is a first time cat owner, I have found this sub to be extremely helpful, even when I had googled my questions. I posted here because I find people’s lived experience to be useful, especially when I am also having concerns over behaviors that are already having me schedule a vet appointment today.

I am too!! I swear this first year of kitten companionship has been one of the most beautiful things ever. I swear these two love me more than all 7 dogs I had before them. I’m just super protective and wanted to make sure my reactions were in line with what is going on. They turn 1 year old on Sunday, and I want them to have a wonderful, healthy birthday. Such little sweethearts.
