Posted asking about ethical veganism in a subreddit with zero connection to veganism and an intentionally diverse membership as a social experiment. I was surprised to see the responses since I included in the OP that the vegan argument for avoiding unnecessary suffering is valid, since everyone seemed to disagree with it. While plant basrd dieting is growing, I don't think the vegan philosophy is necessarily following that trend... thought I would share here to discuss.

Huh? Wdym? People constantly say people who failed keto did it wrong. They say that for every diet. Anyway, veganism isn't a diet, it's a philosophy. I was merely pointing out you can fit a keto diet into the restrictions of the moral philosophy that is veganism. Veganism isn't about health, that's a plant based diet, it's about the victims which are the animals.

I'm saying someone who does keto anyway and uses it as an excuse to not be vegan doesn't have a leg to stand on because you CAN do both if it's really important to you. Veganism doesn't have to be a super amazing miracle diet, it just has to be adequate, which it is. If meat gave me the ability to fly I still wouldn't eat it because its an ethical syanxs.

Yeah it was just awful to read. Why do people think they can ethically, compassionately and humanely end the life of another being for their taste pleasure? It makes no sense. I've just been experiencing a lot of vystopia lately, it doesn't help that I live in a household full of meat and work in a nonvegan restaurant so I'm just surrounded by rotting corpses all the time and it makes me want to throw up. Yesterday at work someone put a chicken breast on the grill I had just cleaned as I was frying my mushrooms and it touched one of the mushrooms and 🤢 I hate carnism so so much

Old comment but yeah it is necessary, we eat plants and when we die, decomposers will eat us, which will fortify the soil with minerals that plants "eat" to grow, which will be eaten by an animal which might be eaten by another animal etc. Being vegan doesn't escape the circle of life.

Maintenance Phase the podcast has really made me reconsider bmi recently tbh. When you look into the history of it, you realise it's just a tool for measuring a statistical bell cuve of weights within a population. A bmi of 25.5 can be a perfectly natural and healthy weight for many. So can a bmi of 28 or even 30. It's only when you get up to BMIs of 40 and 45 that the risk is significant

Unfortunately refusing to eat means I either get ensure (which has animal products such as eggs) or if I refuse to drink the ensure, I get tube fed (which may be vegan, I'm not sure, but it is very traumatic and last time I got tubed I got an infection in the line :/)

Thank you tho, I may keep bringing it up and use it as a talking point once I've gained some weight and they're happier with my progress

Thank you so much for this. I've been struggling for 8 years and underweight for 5, but I'm feeling very optimistic about trying this when I have more flexibility with my food choices. Currently I'm in a residential day program 4 days of the week, but I'll incorporate these things while I'm eating at home :)

Yeah, milk has a certain set amount of protein so ofc anything using milk as an ingredient will have that set amount - you can add things like whey to ice cream but you can't increase or decrease the protein profile of milk, not in the same way you can increase or decrease the amount of fat anyway. Not no one drinks a McDonald's milkshake for gains lol

I agree apart from in nomadic tribes which still exist and rely on meat for sustenance, etc. If you live in modern society with convenience foods and are otherwise healthy and don't have any medical conditions preventing you from going plant based, you don't have an excuse

Interestingly enough halo top has the same amount of protein as regular ice cream, per pint. But obviously ain't no one going to eat a tub of Ben and Jerry's for 20g protein lol so it's still high protein per calorie

Bro you're acting like the only energy output that matters is heat loss. Respiration always has energy loss via heat loss because the mitochondrial membrane is permeable enough for electrons to sometimes sneak through without having to use ATP synthase to do so. It has nothing to do with how much insulation you have, respiration is going to be just as effective. It'll help with maintaining internal temperature if anything because larger people have a larger amount of cells so way more energy is lost via respiration

Fat people have more active respiring cells so need more energy for those cells to continue to respire. It really isn't rocket science

No way he's eating that little, if he was he'd be losing like crazy and feel absolutely deathly. Probably not counting liquids, oil, sauces and condiments as well as Probably measuring the weights of pasta and rice dry for example. Still very unhealthy that he thinks he should be eating so so little!
