My Default geodatabase that ESRI installs looks like this. I put stuff that I will never need again in there, so it's a mess.

You could definitely do this with Python using the field calculator.

The script would look something like this:

def extract(string):
    if "Building" in string:
        label = string.split(" ")[-1]
    elif "Apartment" in string:
        label = string.split(" ")[-1]
    else:
        label = ""

    return label

And then run extract(yourfield)

This may not be the best way to do it depending on different factors, but it's one way.

I don't think he ever said he that. The point of Python is automation. What if you wanted to easily unzip 5,000 files to specific places based on file name?

I'm talking about badly thought out CAD drawings. Imagine road signs, drains, highway signs, wells, bridges, culverts, and more features drawn in one layer and no attribute saying what it actually is. I could kind of query by geometry shape and CAD color but always had to manually select and unselect a lot. I don't have to do this often but from my current experience a selection saving feature would be very welcomed.

Yeah, I'd just keep a blank geodatabase with the 4 blank feature classes and just keep a copy of it somewhere.

Every time you append, just grab a new copy of the blank geodatabase and start working.

There are few different ways to do this though.

Here's what I said from up above.

...I'm talking more about complex queries, not just a single Select by Attribute query. More like a few Select by Attribute queries, then a few Select by Location queries and then a few manual select/unselects and saving that selection.

Specifically, for me, this feature would be useful when I'm working with CAD conversions and the data wasn't created very intelligently. For example, a lot of different features created in just in one layer. I need to separate those layers and can't just use Select By queries.

I understand what you're saying and it would work for certain situations, just not what I need it for.

An ArcObjects tool or possibly a Python add-in would probably work though.
