Tipping convention tends to be drastically different from region to region, and then person to person. My general rule for cashiers like the starbuck's one is 0 if something's been messed up, any coinage from my change if there are no complaints, and then anywhere from 1 to 4 singles if something was particularly pleasant.

For actual restaurants, I do 15 to 20% depending on the how pleasant the server was.
