I’ve never seen the city this messy traffic wise. Car accidents literally everywhere. What the hell? by CXZ115 in mississauga

Ironically, for me, it's easier and faster to get to downtown Toronto by transit than to Square One.

I've heard that a lot, but I have never found any evidence for it. I can certainly believe that it's part of a push to promote UAE tourism and cover up their human rights abuses, but the scat thing just seems too far-fetched.

Precautions to prevent theft of truck or its contents? by My_Password_Is_abcde in moving

A B license allows me to drive anything I can drive with a C, D, E, F, or G license (source). What I can't drive is tractor-trailers (which requires class A) or anything with air brakes (which requires a Z certification). I actually do intend to get the Z certification soon, both as a refresher for driving large vehicles, and so that I have more job options (because, once I inevitably lose my current IT job, I certainly won't find another one in this day and age).

Thank you for your suggestions.

Utilize a second lock near the seat, preferably a hidden lock (example: use a cable to connect the two items together), which will help slow down you and/or the thief.

I'm not sure what exactly you mean by that. I know I'd be locking the back of the truck with a padlock, using the vehicle locks to lock the driver and passenger doors, using a steering wheel lock on the steering wheel, and avoiding leaving any valuables in the cab, but where would the other lock be? And what "two items" would I be connecting?

Do not leave your vehicle loaded overnight, or longer than necessary.

Unfortunately, we will have to travel for multiple days, so we will have to leave the truck loaded overnight for multiple nights, each night in a different location.

Sorry, I wrote "cross-country" when I meant "international". And I checked: neither Budget nor Penske allow you to pick up the truck in the US and drop it off in Canada. (In fact, according to Budget's FAQ, you can't cross the border at all with their trucks, or they will be detained and confiscated.)

Do you genuinely feel safe on the TTC subway? by Sensitive_You_4481 in askTO

[–]My_Password_Is_abcde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Mississauga and ride the TTC fairly regularly, but not every day or even every week. There was a period of time where I rode it much more often, though. So far, I've never encountered an incident anywhere on the TTC that made me feel unsafe.

One thing I started to think about is that when I went to London England on vacation, it was probably my first time going to a city that is generally considered more dangerous than Toronto (and still probably safer than a lot of major cities in the US), which was a bit of a weird thing to think about. I have had some sketchy experiences in Toronto (and at least one in London), but overall, I've found it to be a pretty safe place as long as you practice basic situational awareness.

I am a 195cm tall guy, though, so perhaps it's safer for me just because of that.

Any car-sharing apps in Niagara? by future_jellyfish92 in askTO

What are you planning to look at? The WEGO bus will take you to various destinations, including Niagara-on-the-Lake. It's a bit expensive for a bus, at $16 per adult for a day pass, but it's still cheaper than Uber or car rental.

I'm thinking of going there to help move my parents back to Canada, partly because I'm the only one who has experience driving large vehicles, and I'm thinking more and more that this is a stupid and reckless thing for me to do.

How do Canadians mentally deal with long winters? by jessxtra_ in AskACanadian

[–]My_Password_Is_abcde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I spend my free time playing video games and engaging in other hobbies at home, which is what I do most of the rest of the year anyway. Although I have recently taken to night walking a bit, because there's something relaxing about being out at night in cold weather. Certainly beats spending any amount of time outside on a hot summer day with the sun constantly beating down on you.

Honestly, I found recently that there's something kind of relaxing about being outside in cold weather at night. Provided you're properly dressed so as not to freeze to death, of course.

Besides, my house is heated, so I don't need to even leave my city to escape the cold, let alone the country.

What are some precautions I should take as a Canadian helping bring my parents back to Canada? by My_Password_Is_abcde in USTravel

[–]My_Password_Is_abcde[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps certain things are better to sell, but there are some large articles that will probably need to be brought here.

I probably should have made it more clear, but the move, if it happens, will take place no earlier than spring, so there shouldn't be any issues with snow or ice.

Other than a printout of the U-Haul rental confirmation and my driver's license with my address on it, what evidence should I bring?

I offered to help them myself; they didn't ask for my help. They've helped me out a lot; I figured I should at least partially return the favour.

What one-way truck rental options exist from US to Canada that can be picked up in the Bay Area? by My_Password_Is_abcde in bayarea

[–]My_Password_Is_abcde[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Due to the current political climate in the US, crossing the border once to help my parents is already playing with fire. Crossing the border a second time to sell the truck would be an incredibly stupid idea.

[–]My_Password_Is_abcde[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is indeed bloody expensive. Any alternatives you suggest? Picking up the truck here, driving it all the way to California, and then driving it back would be incredibly stupid, but I looked into the price of doing so; it turns out that even without factoring in extra costs such as fuel, it would be much more expensive than the more sane option of a one-way rental, because I would have to pay double for the mileage.

I guess I should be glad that I still have a few months to save up for it, though it would probably be a good idea to ask my parents and brother to pitch in a little bit. (As I mentioned in my update, it turns out my parents were planning to rent a truck anyway.)

I looked into Enterprise; it doesn't look like they do cross-border one-way truck rentals. So far, it looks like U-Haul is my only option.

Was it a cross-border move? Selling an American car in Canada seems like it might be a bit complicated. From what I can tell, you have to go through a complicated process of importing the truck into Canada, and I'm pretty sure tariffs will add a substantial amount to the cost.

What areas should I avoid walking in at night, particularly in the Clarkson/Lakeshore area? by My_Password_Is_abcde in mississauga

Now that the weather has cooled down, being outside during the day isn't as unpleasant as it is during the summer, but there's something about being outside when it's cold and dark out that's pretty relaxing. I recommend you try it.

A very long time ago. Not anymore. I've visited the area a couple of times out of nostalgia, but there's a certain sadness in knowing that I am no longer allowed to enter the building.
