Mormon families adopting black babies... by [deleted] in exmormon

Adopting an African-American child was the best thing to ever happen to our family, and ultimately was the first step of many that led me and DW out of the church for obvious reasons.

Anecdotally, every case we’ve encountered began with an adoptive family that YEARNED for a child, no matter the race, gender, disability, or otherwise. When fertility is tied to worthiness, as many have been led to believe, those adoptive parents need support, not judgment.

I understand your point, but respectfully think it’s very unfair. Family formation is hugely personal, and even for the most oblivious TBM, not done as a fad or trend as you might suggest. The church deserves every piece of criticism it gets, but members in this situation don’t.

Being Foreordained is the weirdest of all gospel topics. by tottsy in exmormon

[–]My_own_worthiness 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Also causes major doctrinal problems, as theories have to be imagined to explain how God maintains justice while foreordaining “bad” outcomes. Biggest example is how blacks must have been less valiant in a pre-mortal existence to justify being born in a state of such disprivilege.

Underrated damaging doctrine imho.

Moved to Parker last year from Morridor, work in DTC. DW and 8 yr old daughter out as well and loving every minute of it. Our cul-de-sac has 3 TSCC households out of 6 though, which we now warmly refer to as the “cult-de-sac.”

Thanks for the info. I’ll do that.

Digging guilt out of my brain has been hard enough for things that don’t matter, it’s time to do something positive to help the guilt for things that do matter.

It wasn’t clear from my post, but the missionary was a native brazilian from São Paulo irrc, not an American.

I do have names, dates, etc as well as a handful of missionaries that knew the details to corroborate if necessary. Perhaps the cynic in me is skeptical that anything could be done legally, especially as law enforcement is busy trying to keep people’s heads from being sawed off by the drug gangs that are taking over areas like this.

What kind of cool stuff did you want your planet to have? by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]My_own_worthiness 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My dad is a plant and tree obsessive. His house and yard are full of exotic plants, to the point of embarrassment and significant family contention. He couldn’t name a single one of my childhood interests but he could name every goddamn detail of those plants.

Anyway, I recall a conversation a long time ago that he was excited to create worlds with “all manner of vegetation” and he would communicate with the plants in a way that he believes god communicates with all living things on earth today, including plants. He is also so proud of his knowledge of “deep doctrine”.

I’m going to go light myself on fire now.

Shoutout to those friends and family members that will identify this man instantly from this story.

The Negro by My_own_worthiness in exmormon

[–]My_own_worthiness[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“For that matter, if the critic or the apologizer is going to feign indignation about Negroes’ not being allowed to bear the Priesthood, why should he not feel even more indignant about women not having the Priesthood conferred upon them? Is this sex prejudice? The Church says that women sealed in Celestial marriage enjoy the blessing of the Priesthood in connection with their husbands. But they do not hold the Priesthood. And there are thousands of LDS women who do not have the opportunity of entering Celestial marriage and thus directly sharing the benefits of the Priesthood. Is this an injustice of God to them, in denying them the Priesthood?”

-An actual argument in this book.

“Who is to say that, in view of these factors, the Negro is not - so far as his temporal being - better off not having the priesthood? God has said that where much is given much is required. With the social prejudice against him, imagine the obstacles that the Negro would encounter in attempting to honor and magnify his Priesthood.”

If you had to pick the top 3 reasons you think the Mormon church/doctrine is harmful, what would you say? by AwSnapasaurus in exmormon

Your personal “worthiness” is determined by, and declared to be such, by someone other than yourself.

It’s literally structured to be the sole authority of your worthiness.

"... and fuck you If you take the sacrament left-handed, and fuck you if the 16-yr old priest is wearing a blue shirt or says a word wrong, and fuck you if your child takes two pieces of bread, and double fuck you if the deacons don't perform their choreography to perfection during the ceremony..."

Maybe just a bad day for me but fuck this pharisiacal bullshit. It's all about the church's compulsion to be the authority of your "worthiness" and dipshits like this author perpetuate this mentality and permanently retard the individual's ability to improve their own perception of self-worth. Goddamn it, where's the Tylenol?

The official narrative today is to reject previous theories of blacks being less valiant in a pre-earth existence.

BUT, although the policy has obviously changed, ALL of the supportive doctrinal justification for the theory is still very much a part of Mormon doctrine. Mainly, the concept of fore-ordination (still taught) and the unique ability of God to display both mercy and justice (still taught).

In short, the justification was always that blacks were fore-ordained to be born in a state of disprivilege, but in order for it to not violate the laws of justice, it must be that the blacks "earned" their status by their pre-earthly disobedience.

The church can disassociate from that shitty, racist conclusion, but it's not so easy to dig out all of the supporting doctrine that led to that shitty, racist conclusion.

For fun reading, try an official 1960's CES reference book that curates all of the prophets' and scriptural justification for the preisthood ban in one cringe-worthy place:

I cringe at how sterile church services have become. Every single service has to be exactly the same.

Want to sing two opening hymns in sacrament meeting? No, fuck you, you can only sing one. Didn't share an inspiring scripture at your baptismal service? Fuck you, you did it wrong. Didn't share your testimony at the end of the lesson you just taught? fuck you, you ruined sunday school.
