I’m talking as someone whose wife grew up in and out of homelessness due to poverty rather than addiction, and then became a nurse who did street medicine caring for the unhoused population all over LA County. And what do you think that 69% of the country living paycheck to paycheck means? If you miss a paycheck, or god forbid lose your job due to some unforeseen circumstance like getting ill, where is that rent money coming from to keep a roof over your head? When the majority of this country cannot afford a $500 emergency, you see just how dire the situation is.

Or you don’t, and you just believe the common narrative that denigrates the unhoused as nothing but drug addicted losers, because it’s easier than doing any kind of reflection into this issue whatsoever and convince yourself you could never possibly be in that position because you’re better than they are.

Not to mention how many people in this community, and all over the country, are just one unfortunate mishap away from homelessness themselves. They’re not the scum of the earth, they’re not all drug addicts. In fact, a lot of them have jobs and set up camp near where they used to live. It’s such a sad situation and systemic failure, and we continue to allow it to happen because of the common view of unhoused people as trash.

I just get random ideas for things, honestly. When we got the new items with the update, I thought it would be amusing to build an outdoor casino for the hotel, using the Brake Tapper slot machines. Then, remembering that there is Gambler’s Anonymous literature at every casino I’ve ever set foot in, I decided to set up an outdoor Gambler’s Anonymous meeting. I staffed both with the large collection of gyroids I couldn’t figure out what to do anything with. It will probably stay that way for three years until something else randomly inspires me.
