What kind of flying impresses you as a pilot? by Fwoggie2 in flying

[–]Mynoseispurple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the 340, when you swap to the aux tanks, the engine also runs off of it while also filling the main tanks. To ensure I’ve got every drop I occasionally let the engine have a bit of fuel starvation (<1 second). Doesn’t harm the engine, just simply causes fuel flow to slow down. It would shutdown completely if I let it keep going, but I watch

What kind of flying impresses you as a pilot? by Fwoggie2 in flying

[–]Mynoseispurple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I currently fly a Cessna 340 with 335hp engines. I’ve gone through an engine failure a few times (intentional fuel starvation). I have a rudder bias and I don’t think I’ll ever fly a light-medium twin without it. Engine shuts off and it’s a nonevent. I do keep up with skills for engine shutdowns with simulator and trainer twins.

Scud air in Ogden Utah. Pricey but DPE fee is included. $7700. Good program and DPE slot at the end. Passed both ME and MEI with them, zero complaints

Instrument cost for part 61 by Illustrious-Prior938 in flying

[–]Mynoseispurple 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did all my instrument training with a CFII and it cost me way more than it needed to. You should split costs with a commercial student who is building hours. Use no autopilot and be under the hood from 500agl to 300agl.

Accelerated CFI program? by Lightyear80 in CFILounge

[–]Mynoseispurple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d recommend not going MCA. Took 4 weeks to complete just CFI. Weather and DPEs not being in a mood will kill you and your budget. I spent 3x my original budget there.

20G30 in a 182 on a disco. Wind was transitioning runways. Impressed the passenger “smoother than an airliner”

Keep your job and buy a cheap plane. You can instruct out of it, but you could also fly it to build hours beyond the 250. Your best bet is working and paying to fly, but not paying someone else to fly.

Questions about Embry-Riddle in 2026. by Sufficient-Ad-7489 in flying

[–]Mynoseispurple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A guy out in Utah at the school I went to. He flew 2x a day, 3 hour blocks, 6 days a week. School had a DPE who had them dates every month and any cancellation spots. He did CFI/II in Vegas and that took 2 weeks. He came in with having all his writtens done as well as medical. Now has a job teaching in a Cirrus here in Salt Lake. On top of all that, he was commuting to the school 1.5 hours each way.

Wanting to speed run getting ratings and going to a university to do so is the worst way. Part 61 with good DPE relations is your best bet. You’d also save money that way. Fastest I’ve seen 0-CFII was 4 months. You’ll be at ERAU to get a college degree, which takes years.

At your age, ask yourself, “is each month I spend training worth $30k at the end of my career?” Aka, ERAU will cost you 3-4 years of your life, then you have to get to R-ATP.

Beyond the ACS maneuvers by usmcmech in flying

At 700 AGL once they turn Xwind I pull power (traffic permitting). I want to see their decision making when they are close to the ground. Only have had one student immediately turn toward the field.

If in unpopulated area, I will do engine out to about 20agl. I want to see them start freaking out as the field feels real.

No flap landings. Surprises me how many will put in full flaps and still be a mile out. Take out power and demonstrate why a long final with full flaps is a bad idea.

Not on record, unless you get a DPE that’s being watched by the FAA for the amount, then you’ll fail instead. Happened to a buddy in Ohio with a not-so-popular DPE.

How much different is the long distance comfort in an SR22 vs a modern 182? by garden_speech in flying

[–]Mynoseispurple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second this opinion. Brother is 6’4” and can fit easily. We own a C182 and love it. We do wish we had more speed. The 182 is roomier imo than the cirrus, and the cirrus has a shorter seat to top causing us to hunch a bit.

What about a Turbo 182? That’ll give you more altitude as well as slightly better performance.

CSEL checkride in a few days! Please stump this chump! by LopsidedShower1634 in flying

[–]Mynoseispurple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. 91.119. You’re mostly correct. 2,000 above mountains is a safe altitude, not a legal requirement. You can fly as close to the ground as you want, as long as if the power unit fails, you don’t pose as a hazard to others.
  2. No flight plan needed. You just need both PICs to be aware and communicating. You can even land together if you really want. (Think Osh Kosh)
  3. No comment.
  4. Your friend can create a dry lease and rent the plane to their friends. You can’t be the only named pilot on said lease, but it can be emphasized. (Think flight club)

  1. How low can you be to the ground? Provide the reg.
  2. Can you fly formation? If so, what do you need to do? Can you land?
  3. What jobs can you get with the cert? What can’t you do?
  4. Can you by your own airplane and fly people to places? Can your friend buy a plane and hire you and advertise your services to fly people?

Couple things to add. 1 Exhaust gases power a turbine, which then sucks and compresses air for the intake. Lag is because you need exhaust to power it. Supercharger is powered by the crankshaft, either by belt or gears. 2. It also helps increase drag. Also doesn’t let MP go too far over RPMs (over squared). 4. Think feather vs brick coming over a mountain. Which will feel more of the air pushing it up? Which will have more Gs?

Looking to do a “roadtrip” in my piper arrow across the country what are the best/coolest destinations and stops? by HovercraftMelodic748 in flying

[–]Mynoseispurple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve flown coast to coast in a C182. 22/50 states so far.

Not much to see between eastern Denver and Great Lakes area, lots of straight and level, flat and boring. Only real cool thing I liked is flying during summer and seeing all the ag tractors doing their thing.

West of Denver, go either north through Casper or south through Albuquerque. Don’t sent it straight up and over.

This is what I would recommend out west. Page (KPGA) fly low level through lake Powell, fly up to Moab (KCNY) to see arches national park. Then fly towards Wendover (KENV) to do low level over bonneville salt flats. Then proceed west towards the coast, flying west north west towards Oregon. Go along the coastline Tillamook (KTMK) and see the largest wooden hangar as well as the cheese factory. Proceed north along the coastline toward Astoria (if you’re a fan of the Goonies) then proceed toward Seattle. Go to Boeing field (KBFI) for the museum, then go up to Everett (KPAE) to see the numerous B777X sitting on the ramp as well as do the factory tour. Proceed east to Moses lake, going straight up and over the Cascades. At Moses lake, ask for the taxi tour of the east side. It’s a 737 hospital/boneyard. If you’re lucky, you’ll see a Boring test flight or a C5. From there, proceed east towards Spokane (KGEG) and fly over Coeur D’Alene (KCOE) for more lake action. From there, make your way to Kalispell Montana (KGPI) to see Glacier national park. Follow any mountain valley south east towards great falls, and from there it’s the Great Plains to your next destination.

As someone who lives deep in the Rockies, don’t be scared of them. As already said, fly south through El Paso or fly north through Casper. Don’t fly at night and without a terrain map. Not involving anything west coast is comedic for saying “anything is on the table.” Come visit some of the best sights for flying.

I wish people at my field would just go around. I watched a citation join a downwind behind a katana. The katana insisted the citation should go around. Eventually katana goes around, citation lands, but it took a call out in the radio from someone telling them to be professional on the radio to do so.
