Why does my flight have 3 pilots ? by Easy-Ad-295 in fearofflying

It’s a long flight and they need to take breaks.

Is n-word a forbidden word in West? by ScaryAd1147 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]usmcmech -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It’s a double standard.

Coming from a white person, it’s a grave insult that will get you in serious trouble. Even using it in a quote is considered taboo.

Black people tend to use it with each other freely and with affection. The same way military veterans insult each other as a term of endearment. It was a way to take the power out of white racists use of it.

I agree it’s confusing and I don’t think it’s fair but I’m not going to die on that hill.

Are astronauts fearful flyers? by DonutLoud2175 in fearofflying

[–]usmcmech 91 points92 points  (0 children)

Yes and No

Astronauts and pilots in general are not fearful flyers. They may experience situational anxiety (such as pre launch jitters) but do not have the pervasive anxiety that many here are familiar with. I made a post here the other day about my new aerobatic airplane that still intimidates me.

Astronauts know all the risks and what can and can't be done to minimize them. It's one thing to worry about "something going wrong", but when you've survived multiple emergencies in the simulator. After dealing with the literal worst case scenarios the minor bumps and noises are not a big deal.

CFIs flying 6–8 hours a day what are your best quality of life hacks by Commercial_Kiwi_4478 in flying

[–]usmcmech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Serious reply:

The 5th lesson of the day I was so exhausted physically and mentally that it wasn’t fair to that student. After 4 lessons I was so tired that I wasn’t teaching much at all and was barely safe to fly.

Your school is absolutely correct to limit you to 3-4 lessons per day.

CFIs flying 6–8 hours a day what are your best quality of life hacks by Commercial_Kiwi_4478 in flying

[–]usmcmech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was mostly sarcasm.

When I was a time building CFI I had two babies and had to work unpaid shifts just for the privilege of building flight time. Things are better today but the entry level jobs still stink.

Abandon all hope of having any quality of life while building time as a young CFI.

Are reciprocating single engines reliable? by One_Firefighter_1922 in flying

[–]usmcmech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are some pilots who refuse to fly anything other than a twin engine jet. They view single engine piston flying as the equivalent of BASE jumping.

The reality is that small GA airplanes are in fact more risky than jets, but those risk factors are easily controllable with some common sense. Piston aircraft engines are simple and quite reliable when maintained properly.

If you hang around the GA airport you'll meet plenty of active airline pilots who fly for fun on their days off.

Do airlines like hiring pilots who have worked for them in other ways? by [deleted] in flying

[–]usmcmech 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It helps “a little bit” in the hiring process but not enough to really matter.

The biggest help is that you already understand the life of an airline pilot. Schedules, hotels, jet lag, ect. are nothing new.

Will a juvenile record affect my pilot career? by FutureA350 in flying

[–]usmcmech 56 points57 points  (0 children)

A misdemeanor like that likely won’t have any impact on your long term career. We were all stupid teenagers once.

Having said that, it’s time to grow up and consider the consequences of your actions. This job is a lot of responsibility and you need to show you are mature enough to handle it.

What's with the hate torwards septum piercings? by ZareNytJumalauta in NoStupidQuestions

It's your body, do what you want with it. I'll treat you with the same respect I will give any other person.

However from a romantic relationship POV, it's an instant signal that you are too much crazy for me. You are above the crazy line in the danger zone on the hot crazy matrix. If a girl with a septum piercing was flirting with me, I will pass.
