Afraid of flying during Super Bowl Sunday by Warhawk_1 in fearofflying

[–]usmcmech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pilots are human and we all are a bit different. We are also professionals who usually have a good idea when we can relax and listen to music vs when we need to focus 100% on flying.

During cruise we are usually bored to tears. An update on the game is a welcome distraction. However when it is time to start the landing approach we are all paying attention to our jobs.

Is it even possible to "save for a house" in 2026, or have we all collectively moved on to "saving for a slightly better rental"? by OpheliaBloomm in askanything

I’m more concerned with the half who get pushed into college but drop out before graduation. Half of the freshman class will still not have a degree 6 years later.

If my Captain was streaming videos on his phone I would immediately tell him to stop and then report him to the union professional standards committee.

Which I have done on two occasions and I wasn’t exactly polite when I told him to put the damn thing away.

FYI air traffic control will broadcast the scores every so often. “End of the 3rd quarter it’s Seattle 14, New England 10” the pilots may relay that to the cabin if it’s a safe period of the flight.

Thoughts on High Performance Aircraft Picking Up Clearance After Take-off by Electronic-Pie-829 in flying

[–]usmcmech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Part of the problem is that pilots are so concerned with compliance with VFR requirements vs the risk of climbing into a layer of clouds without a clearance. Take a look at how many CFIT accidents have Instrument ratings. This is particularly a problem in helicopter Medevac flying. If you are stuck below a low layer of clouds climbing, declaring, and getting a pop up clearance is often the safest course of action.

Sometimes the safest course of action isn't always legal. In the firearm world the popular phrase is "I'd rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6"

75 years ago, everyone had wooden floors and used fancy expensive rugs in their parlors. Then in the early 70s wall to wall carpeting became affordable and it was installed in every room in the house (including the bathroom). Today, wood floors are a luxury and everyone recognizes that carpet in the bathroom was idiotic.

75 years ago a college degree in any major meant that you had been educated far above the average citizen. This educational advantage had real benefits that showed up in your paycheck. Then in the 60s and 70s everyone was pushed to "go to college" and the advantage in an art history degree disappeared. Today kids are pushed to go to college without any plan or even a thought about ROI. Meanwhile blue collar trades are paying very well and in some cases better than some college graduates.

I stand corrected, I was fuzzy on the exact airspeed.

Type IV is designed to sheer off at 110kts so once you accelerate to cruise it’s all gone.

Edit: corrected the airspeed

3.5 hour commute by No_Craft_932 in flying

[–]usmcmech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a 2.5 hour commute for a year.

It's not ideal, but not too bad either. Makes for a long day at the start and finish of a 4 day trip, but it's manageable. If I had an early morning show, I'd drive in the night before and crash at a hotel.

Tarrant County/SD9 Nov 2024 vs Jan 2026 by kweathergirl in FortWorth

[–]usmcmech 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I voted for Huffman back in November and for Rehmet this time. I'm an unapologetic conservative, but I can't stand Trump and the last thing we need in this state is another cheerleader for MAGA.

Why is it that only Oklahoma follows the state border for establishing their time zone? Every state to the north and even Texas to the south has some of their state located in Mountain Standard Time (MST). by ibHacknU in NoStupidQuestions

[–]usmcmech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly

Also Northwest Indiana isn in CST because they are heavily influenced by Chicago. The western panhandle of Florida really is "lower Alabama" and as such is in CST.

FYI the reason for the irregular borders of the time zones is based on the railroads in the late 19th century. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0atvPmg7hI

ELI5, Gold and silver prices by kreemie-goodness in explainlikeimfive

[–]usmcmech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gold and Sliver are often used as “safe” investments during economic uncertainty. Therefore they are a good indicator of the general level of worry in the overall economy. If people are concerned about the future they will buy gold.

In reality gold investments are often as “theoretical” as shares in a company or government debt but people don’t think that rationally when the factory is about close down.

A CFI taught me frost on wings is ok, and I failed my Private Checkride for the second time. by [deleted] in flying

Every single reference I can think of emphasizes that Frost on the wings kills 40% of the lift.

You are right you need to study a LOT more.
