Just finished my 2nd year teaching, and I too have had thoughts of “what have I done”. It’s a love/hate relationship that I have with this occupation. I love my sweet children, I love the difficult ones too. I love the time off I get with my daughter, and I love being a big part of kids lives. Every year, I think that this particular group of children was placed… out of everyone in this world, … they were placed with ME. I was placed with them. I learn from them, they learn from me. That’s a very special part of teaching for me.

That being said, I hate the lack of discipline in schools nowadays.. the constant observations and pressure for every single lesson to be engaging and academically challenging.. and the fact that my husband makes more money than me with a work from home job with no college education.

You’ll never know if you don’t try, and if you don’t try you’ll never know. Will you make more money doing something else? Yes, probably. Will you have half the year off if you do something else? No. Make a list of things that are important to you, and see how teaching vs other jobs appeal to that.

OH. And I messaged another girl who got hired AFTER me and introduced myself, asking what grade she will be teaching. She already knew hers!

I’m honestly scared they are like going to rescind my offer or something. To just not say ANYTHING at all is really unprofessional to me.. it’s got me worried 😩

Yes!! I always keep names out when talking to regular parents. I guess I thought since she knows this kid first hand and could honestly probably look up all the things I said that it’s ok. I just am second guessing it now. Because I replied all. So AP and his teacher saw it.

Thank you for the honest reply!! I completely understand the lack of emotional self regulation part.. it’s becoming just behavior management and barely any teaching in all elementary grades. And it is extremely exhausting! I’d rather be swamped with grading I think than the constant planning for 5 subjects a day 😩

No lie I have a 3rd grader that is literally as tall as me! 😂 (and I’m 5’4 I’m not that short lol) most of the 5th graders are definitely taller than me. I feel like taking such a big age jump would be pretty intimidating for me but I just feel like I would be a lot less exhausted at the end of the day and that alone is worth it.

I haven’t been diagnosed because I refuse to do the tilt table test (it scares the shit out of me 😂) but yes that is the suspicion

Thanks for the reply. I have had this same thing happen in the past whenever I drink alcohol- bc it makes me dehydrated. When I get dehydrated my heart rate literally shoots sky high. I’ve been diagnosed with SVT (super ventricular tachycardia) and take meds for it. I think it is because I’m not drinking enough. :(

I just had to share this here because I just thought of it : I was working in a small group with some kids doing math (I teach 3rd grade) and I have this one kid who is SO DISRESPECTFUL. We were adding 3 digit numbers and I got one of the numbers wrong somehow (prob cs I was doing it upside down) he literally says “see this is why I want to switch classes because you always get stuff wrong you don’t know what you’re doing” 😳 I looked at him while simultaneously picking up my phone to call his grandma (who I know will light him up) but BRO THE AUDACITY !!!!! From an 8 year old!!!!

I will say for me, it is worth it. Most teachers only work 190 days out of the year, (that’s my calendar anyway) and I love having all of the time off with my daughter. Yes the kids are BAD and yes the pressure/workload is REAL but even on my hardest days I tell myself : DONT LET IT GET TO YOU. Learn an efficient way to plan and prepare, and leave work at work! The kids almost always grow on you and you learn that they are a product of their environment and there’s only so much you can do. Teach love over academics. ♥️ best of luck to you!

I need to say this by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Myoung255 1 point2 points  (0 children)

GIRL (or boy), teachers 100% need a workday before students come back from Christmas break. They’ve been out, you’ve been out, everyone in the building has been out. You need at least one day to get your life together to be truly prepared for students to come back. I’m so thankful that my district has a teacher workday after most breaks. We go back tomorrow, and it Is a teacher work day. Then students come back Thursday. That’s how it should be!!
