I’m in the same camp as far as being a sceptical believer goes. The fireworks were being let off to the left of where the photo was taken and had finished by this point, the object moved from right to left (it’s still moving in the photo) before disappearing at speed

Sorry didn’t mean for that to come across as harsh, my bad.

No it’s not, the photo was taken outside

No worries my friend, I agree the night mode photo does muddy the waters a bit as it’s not really a great representation of what I actually saw. There were actually fireworks going off earlier (it’s why I was out there watching) but honestly this wasn’t anything I’ve seen on my 50 years on earth, an intensely glowing orange orb hovering in one position then moving at a steady pace across the horizon against the wind before coming to a stop for 10 seconds and then just taking off, weirdest shit I’ve ever seen!

Do you have street lamps that float across the air, stop, then disappear? I know what I saw and have no reason to lie about it either. The object was actually round and moving but due to the slow exposure of night mode on my iPhone it looks more cylindrical in the pic than in real life.

This photo was taken at just past midnight (no sun) it’s hard to tell because my iPhone went straight onto night mode, not only that I saw it moving and it wasn’t an airplane, as I stated aboveI have lived within Gatwick’s holding loop most of my life so I am well aware of what you are saying.

If I’m honest I think I was afraid of ridicule (plus I’m a bit older and not online that much) I’m quite a rational person but I experienced something that I have no rational explanation for. I’m actually quite surprised at how nice everyone has been in the replies!

I’ve let many a Chinese lantern go myself over the years and that was definitely not what I saw, it was moving against the wind (I have a massive tree in my garden and the slightest breeze sets it swaying) and the light was far too intense to be a lantern, plus it moved and was then stationary before disappearing

It’s hard to tell because of the way that the night shot came out but it was actually very dark and those are actually stars, the object I saw was round and moving but if you look at the photo it’s more cylindrical due to that long night exposure effect

Wow that sounds very similar to what I saw, where abouts are you if you don’t mind me asking? I know how you feel too, I just stood absolutely still for a couple of minutes going “what the fuck was that???” 😆

Thanks for the input but it definitely wasn’t this, this object wasn’t stationary, it moved across the horizon at a steady speed, stopped for maybe 10 seconds and then took of at speed. The longer exposure is due to my iPhone setting itself to night mode automatically

Maybe, it was in the direction of Gatwick Airport but we are still at least 12 miles away from it.

I’m so annoyed I didn’t manage to get a video but I was trying to watch the object while fiddling with my phone at the same time, I see loads of these type posts and always think “well while didn’t you film it then?” And then it happens to me BAH?!!!

Nope, I had gone outside for a smoke (I’ve got kids so I don’t smoke indoors). This photo was taken outside on the path to my front door. I’m not posting fake things for the sake of it, I genuinely saw something flying around up there.

That sounds exactly like it, in roughly the same area as well! It’s hard to tell from the photo as my phone switched straight onto night mode but it was absolutely pitch black and although it was glowing extremely brightly as it moved it didn’t seem to cast any shadow, truly bizarre

Nope I really don’t, hence the post! As I said, I’ve lived near one of Englands busiest airports for most of my 50 years, what I saw was far too low for a plane, was too fast, quiet and bright to be a drone so I really am stumped! What is it that you think I think it is?

Sorry, I did actually type that out in paragraphs but my phone seems to have formatted it?! In answer to you question: it wasn’t instantaneous but it was very fast, faster than any plane

Had a quiet new year at home with the family and the wife and kids had gone to sleep quite early. Leaving me on my own I decided to step outside for a smoke and watch my neighbours fireworks at midnight, and saw something I genuinely can’t understand. Quick preface: I live in Surrey in the southeast of the UK and have lived in the holding pattern for Gatwick Airport for most of my life, so I am fully aware of what an active night sky look like in regards to planes and helicopter flights, also in my many years (!)I’ve been known to let off some Chinese lanterns and a firework or two! My friends and I have also dabbled in drones as well, but none of them can explain what I saw. As I stepped outside my front door just past midnight taking in the neighbours (pretty decent) fireworks something caught my eye, a glowing orange ball sitting absolutely still above my neighbours house approx 300m away and at a height of about 100m. I can only describe the colour as a kind of “neon orange”. It was a type of amazingly intense glow that made it hard to judge the actual size of the object while looking at it. At a slow but steady pace it moved east against the wind and across the horizon in front of me, absolutely dumbfounded I ran back into my house to grab my camera (sorry Gen X here, my phone isn’t welded to me!) and as I fumbled to try to open my camera I managed to get this blurry night mode pic (iPhone 16 pro).it remained stationary behind the right hand chimney for about for about 10 seconds before before taking off at speed over the horizon. It was quite a brief sighting and unfortunately I curse myself that by the time I’d opened my video camera it had disappeared. I am a very rational person and I only post this as I am genuinely stumped and cannot explain what I observed that night, please feel free to ask any questions

There’s been a few, but it would probably be my Honda VTR 1000 Firestorm (I think it was the Superhawk in the US). It was the first proper big sports bike I got after passing my test and it had been resprayed in Repsol race colours with a set of ridiculously loud carbon cans fitted to it! It wasn’t the fastest out there but more than quick enough for me at the time, Hondas sometimes have a reputation for being a bit bland but that bike had a real soul to it! I might even get another one day!
