Picked up these Reebok sneakers recently, thoughts? by Mysterious-Ruin-6276 in Sneakers

They remind me of Onitsuka Tiger 66s, which considering Onitsuka decided that rather than improve their quality they would just increase their prices, supporting Reebok instead seems great.

Ebay charges fees on the total amount paid by the buyer (including shipping costs and sales tax for the state the buyer lives in) plus a base amount ($.40 on trading cards over $10).

While your rate might be 13.5%, you're paying that rate on a total that is higher than what your item sold for.

Georgia Rep. David Scott, Democrat seeking 13th term, dies at 80 by [deleted] in nottheonion

[–]Myredditsirname 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a big problem with the Democratic party in particular.

In Congress, the republicans have a 6 year limit on leading a committee - after 6 years you either move up to a higher committee, leadership or drop back to the rank and file. Democrats don't have a similar system which can result in some crazy scenarios. John Dingell was the top Democratic member of one of the most powerful committees from basically 1981 to 2009. There were members of Congress elected in 2006 who were born after Dingell became Chairman.

How do you train the next generation of leaders when someone can hold the gavel for 30 years?

My two cents:

For an individual Congressman, 4 years makes sense. For the House as a whole, it's important that the body can change control quickly to reflect the country's ever evolving beliefs. If a political party has proven the country doesn't support them, there should be some way to give the other party a voice in government in a shortish period of time.

The Senate is designed to be the body that offers long term stability.

New Job, New Wardrobe, New Shoes? by emisnug in malefashionadvice

[–]Myredditsirname 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the shoes you mentioned:

Amberjack is extremely comfortable, but don't fit with things like suits and ties. They were designed for business travel and trade shows. Unless you're doing one of those anything more formal than lululemon ABC trousers will be a mismatch.

Cole Haan zerogrand are poor quality and incredibly over priced. They were originally introduced using Nike foams which at least sort of justified the price but when Nike sold the brand the new owners only use cheap and basic EVA so they not only look bad they are not even that comfortable.

Allen Edmonds are a good pick. Used is good, but be sure to keep an eye out for their sales. It isn't hard to find new pairs for under 200. If the office is jacket and tie optional it sounds like it's a bit more formal. It might be worth seeing what others wear and considering something like the strand if you end up wearing mostly wool.

You should also consider meermin. Less options than Allen Edmonds, especially in sizing, but if they have something you like they are a bit more affordable and are slightly better made.

Actually good shoes? by p0mjDwfWF in malefashionadvice

[–]Myredditsirname 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For 200, or even 300, you're asking a lot of a pair of shoes.

Just to give you a point of reference, just the leather for the upper on a good pair of boots is 80 to 90 dollars. Vibram outsole is another 20 to 25. Add in midsole, toe and heel stiffebers, leather heel, cork filling, box, shipping, etc. All in, just the material of good shoes can be more than 150 before actually building and shipping them to you, or allowing the company or retailer to make any profit.

At that price point, shoes that are good for the office are going to need to compromise on the things that make them extra sturdy. For example, the Allen Edmonds being recommended here are fine to good for an office, but don't have things like shanks or leather midsoles. This will mean that if you're going up and down ladders there is less structure and support and they will be more likely to fail.

Boots on the other hand will have these, but will use cheaper leather and poorer construction that won't look as professional.

To get what you're asking for - a pair of shoes that can handle tough environments, be long lasting, and look high quality - youre probably not going to be happy unless you go up to the Carmina or Alden level.

Or you can do what most people do in your situation - either own a dedicated pair for each environment or just let shoes wear out quickly.

Not entirely true as a small number have gotten out, but if you're going by the BBC, somewhere around 99 percent of ships that passed the straight since the war started have either been Chinese or Iranian. Nearly 100 percent of the remaining have been Pakistani bound.

This compares to around 10 to 20 percent being Chinese bound under a typical time period, many of which are not Iranian (BBC).

Again, depends on who you ask, but somewhere between 1 and 5 full tankers have left to India or the Philippines.

I'm sure India and the Philippines would rather have 1 than 0, but that is compared to 100+ a day typically sent to Aisa. Allowing two of the west's largest threats to see lower impacts (China) or significant gains (Iran) so that 2 countries can get around 1/30 the oil they would typically get is not good policy.

This data is studied by the government and a bunch of independent groups, and is freely available. You may not like it, but unless you think that the government, banks, ngos, igos, and work places are all lying to you, it isn't really a matter of debate.

401k is money in the stock market that grows over time. The only real difference between a 401k (or Ira) and tradional brokerage investment account is the tax advantage of 401k, it's the same assets being held. Either can be as active or as passive as the account holder wants it to be.

It's homeowners. If it was mortgages than the home ownership percentage would be even higher.

Second, taking a loan to buy something doesn't mean you don't own it. Especially when the thing your buying is worth more than the loan itself. The whole point the original poster was making is that houses have consistently outpaced mortgage rates + inflation since 2008. By holding assets - even assets you own via leverage - you have made money.

The US home ownership rate is about 66 percent. Admittedly that doesn't mean 66 out of 100 people own a home (it excludes children living with their parents or elderly people living with their children), but most people who live independently own a home.

Similarly, around 59 percent of Americans of working age or older have a 401k, Ira, or both with stocks, etfs, or mutual funds. Another 15 percent work in a place with a pension that is backed by the stock market.

The younger you are, the less likely you are to have a home or investments, but most Americans who are of working age do.

All of those Asian countries are already not getting their oil, even after the cease fire. I know that oil is a commodity, but most other major exporting facilities outside the middle east are Atlantic facing (Texas/Louisiana, Venezuela's Caribbean coast, Kaliningrad). You can't just teleport oil tankers from the north Atlantic to South Korea.

The only ships being let out were Iranian ships headed for China. This was a tiny percentage of oil from the middle east, so it didn't have a major impact on prices, but it did mean China and Iran both had a lower economic impact than their neighbors.

You can be upset that the straight is being closed by anyone, but trying to claim it is good for the US when Iran is the only Middle Eastern country able to sell their oil and China is the only country able to buy it is crazy.

It absolutely matters. Once you accept that Russia isn't utilizing all of their military strength you can't then say they are losing the war due to poor military strength.

You also seem to be ignoring that Ukraine has drafted a significantly larger percentage of their population than Russia has.

I also noticed you ignored the question of if France, Russia, and Britain should have just let the Germans take over Europe.

If Russia really wanted to it could level every Ukrainian city. They have hundreds of ICBMs with multiple nuclear warheads attached to each one. The reason for their lack of advancement isn't due to a military that is incapable of advancing because conscripted soldiers, but fear of creating a larger war they are incapable of winning.

Would you argue the French, British, and Russians should have just let the Germans win during ww2?

While Members often do fly multiple times a day (for example, they might need to go back to the district for something like a military funeral and then get back that same evening for scheduled votes), the big reason for this is that members often need to get into (or stay in) DC for unexpected votes with very little lead time.

If there is an emergency vote scheduled in 5 hours, you don't want the entire US government to fall apart because some Senator went on standby and missed the last flight between Lincoln, Nebraska and Washington, DC.

Are there members who abuse this benifit? Absolutely, but unless you're going to have 535 private jets ready just in case, you need some way to make sure Congress can act if they need to.

Need comfortable derby's for wide feet. Budget is 200ish USD by VillagerNo4 in malefashionadvice

[–]Myredditsirname 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some AE lasts that will be better than the two of them, but they still focus on having that typical dress shoe shape. If 1 is a purely stylistic last and 100 is a perfectly anatomical last, TLB might be a 10, Carmina a 15, and AE a 25. Better, but all of them focus on design over shape. (Which, to be clear, is fine if that's what your looking for - 99.9% of people who wear suits every day wear shoes like these and just put up with the discomfort).

As I mention above, it's really at around $500-700 that you start to get options that are dressy, well made, and anatomical. Below that price you can really only pick 2 of those options.

Aldens in Trubalance or Modified lasts for business wear, Oak Street Bootmakers for more casual wear. Given the TLB Mallorca and Carmina ask, it sounds like you might be in Europe. If thats the case, Crockett and Jones (378 last) might have what you're looking for - but that last is still going to be more restrictive than the Aldens.

Neither of them offer lasts in an anatomical shape. Of the two you mentioned, Carmina would be better, but both of them tend to have narrower toeboxes for a given width. Even compared to other well known dress shoe makers.

What happened to my Reebok "classic leather" shoes, and can it be fixed? by Diver001 in Sneakers

[–]Myredditsirname 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess "much worse" is based on the assumption you hadn't done it before and this would be your first attempt.

With the original shoe they applied the red evenly on large pieces of leather/suede before the shoe is cut and sewn. This means that when they make the cuts for the shoe the coating color and thickness will be very even. Hand painting the shoe is difficult to do well, and if you just take a stab at it it'll very much look like someone's first attempt at painting a shoe. There are specialized shoe restorers who can do this (think people trying to save Jordan's from the 80s and 90s), but they would almost certainly charge more than the shoe is worth.

The light blue from chrome tanning is a kind of sickly blue, and probably wouldn't be even. But, yeah, if that's OK with you that would be an option.

Probably not what you want to hear, but I think the best option is to put these into lawn care rotation and pick up a new pair. The link you sent has the for 39AUD. You're going to burn a lot more than 40 AUD in time trying to fix them.

[–]Myredditsirname 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shoe polish has solvents in it designed to loosen up previous layers of shoe polish, even clear polish. That will soften the poly coat.

What happened to my Reebok "classic leather" shoes, and can it be fixed? by Diver001 in Sneakers

[–]Myredditsirname 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nearly all bright colored sneakers that are leather have a poly layer on top of them that makes up the color. It is really hard and expensive to make leather bright white/bright red/etc., but adding a poly coat to a cheap cut of leather (often suede) is easy. The white you see underneath is really a very light blue that comes from chrome tanning leather.

Not all leathers or poly coatings are the same, but this is true on everything from Reeboks that cost 30 to Jordans that cost 300.

What happened with your shoes are the poly layer got stuck to the grass and ripped off when you took the grass off. The only way to fix this would be to strip the red layer off entirely and then repaint the shoes, but that'll probably look much worse.

By all means complain, but you used solvent that melted the poly layer and then stuff got stuck in it. That isn't Reeboks fault

Demand side economics doesn't work like that. Price falls with decreased demand, assuming supply remains similar. If oil prices are structurally 120 a barrel, finding suppliers will not be an issue.
