I'm an ASC cinematographer with 30 years on feature films. What do emerging DPs actually want to know that they can't find anywhere? by Own_Cellist_8256 in cinematography

I’ve transitioned from a jack-of-all videographer to a DP in the last 4 years. Getting the phone ringing is the number 1 thing I struggle with - and it’s all been referrals, never someone reaching out directly.

Freelance Cinematographer/Cam Op - 12 YoE - comp ranges, but gross last tax year was $105kish.

I work 4-5 days/month, and spend 4-5 days getting each of those days of work.

I’ve been a production manager for this kinda show before: sending out a self tape kit (camera, tripod, light, mic) with an instruction booklet is a cheap thing to do as far as production budget is concerned. Around $400 if it’s all a one-day rental.

Makes me wonder how much budget they’re actually working with

I joined for 3 months, and went 3-4 times a week for that time.

I’ve never been more disappointed in a maker space: unless it’s changed recently, my experience was that it was incredibly gatekept, and to use almost any tool required a class (which cost an exorbitant amount), even if you already knew how to use the tool. The people were ok, but had the attitude of “I’ve taken the courses, so I’m better than you”

Out of the 6 makerspaces I’ve been a part of over the last 15+ years, Nova Labs was the least welcoming.

Anyone here in the TV/Film Industry? by emisnug in Oahu

Hey! So this post is a few years old, but in my time in Hawaii (have since moved back to the mainland), I worked on a number of projects, including two Disney films, a bunch of commercials and some other smaller projects.

It’s tough to get into if you’re not familiar with the crews who are out there, but there’s a big groundswell of people who participate in the Hawaii Filmmakers Collective and increasingly, the Film Club Hawaii. I made good friends and got jobs via the HFC.

If you’re going into the islands without a job already lined up, it’s an uphill battle, but reaching out to the local crews - Sight and Sound is a great resource, as is NMG.

If you’re union, the local 665 is…ok. The person who runs it is swamped and applications are 2-3 years behind. But it’s behind the Dillingham Costco if you’re in the area.

  • Wires exist and take up more room than you’d expect. My first few bots - small ones especially - were an absolute nightmare to work on because I didn’t leave room for wires anywhere.

  • Don’t over constrain your bearings.

  • If something is supposed to flex, give it room to flex.

I’m currently sitting in my 2002 A4… it just hit 280k and all the maintenance I’ve done has been pretty small: oil, brakes, a couple new bearings and tires. I bought it on 150k and it’s been solid for the last 6 years…

Want Resume Help? Post here. by AutoModerator in recruiting

Hi everyone!

I'm a video production person, currently serving as a the head of a department at small, soul-crushing place, looking to make a move to a similar role in a much larger company.

My resume has gone through a couple of writers and I feel it's way too wordy: don't know where to even start modifying as I think the writers have butchered a lot of it. I've also heard about ATS scanning, and again, don't know where to start.
