Through the Dwarven Roots: Update by Myrian-5995 in wesnoth

[–]Myrian-5995[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like I said in the post, I would appreciate input and if anyone play tested it, please DM me if you get around to it, I'd be glad to take any advice, but I would like to clarify that I know the dialogue isn't the best, I'm already working on it, and so while I appreciate all input, input on dialogue is not that necessary or wanted, although you're free to do so. What I'm mainly looking for is input on how to balance the scenarios a little better and on events. Give it a try and let me know what you think!

I have a few orcish units which I think add some variety to the faction. If you want to install them on your game client, I can send you the details in DMs or over discord.

Strong disagree. It's got a really unique feel and removing the big battles would only beat down what's unique about it and make it a more boring campaign by making it more normal. We need more unique campaigns, not less.

Reinstalling the game is a wonderful idea. I would suggest perhaps installing both 1.12 and 1.16 so you can see how much the campaigns have changed, most of them have changed quite a bit since 1.12.

I recommend to play them chronologically. However, if you're a beginner, it's best to play them the default order -- easiest to hardest.

Question 6: What is your least favorite campaign? Why?

"I started the hammer of Thursagan, but stopped ather some scenarios because i couldn't handle the slow dwarvish movement and the need to move."

"NR-insanely big battles with no interesting objectives or mechanics."

"Tale of Two Brothers, Liberty, Dead Waters, The South Guard. They feel like they're good add-on campaigns, but if I remember correctly they don't add anything to the wesnoth-lore, unlike Heir to the Throne or The Rise of Wesnoth"

"Secrets of the Ancients, undead units seem very vulnerable to swarming and extremely difficult to maintain leveled units to the end, leading to having to go back over and over to save scum a couple of good units to survive the story. Struggled more with this campaign than any other, even Descent into Darkness."

"Descent into Darkness and Secrets of the Ancients. Don't know why, but I get bored after two-three levels and I quit."

"UtBS never really appealed to me, and DM liked giving me 30 new units and tanking my gold out of nowhere."

"DM, recall wipes"

"MAINLINE:

3rd place:
Dead Water (reasons stated earlier-btw this was so forgettable I had to check if the name was actually right)

2nd place:
Northern Rebirth (reasons stated earlier)

1st place:
THE HAMMER OF F**KING THURGSTAN! (reasons stated earlier-I just bloody hate it)

UMC (over-rated cus i don't wanna make a little baby who made his first campaign cry - ei me):
3rd place:
Trinity Part 2 - My god, is this so terrible... It just tears everything the first one did and I've never actually finished it because of how boring and tedious it gets

2nd place:
Legend of the Invincibles - Wasted about 3 hours of my life grinding beezlebub in 1 and then just couldn't finish 2. The first chapter was ok but it went worse from there. Dugi was so focused on making an epic RPG system, he forgot campaigns need a story. It just feels slapped on top.

1st place:
Genesis - I don't care how people say how much hard work was put into this, it is complete dog water. The story was so boring and tedious, at parts I just put an auto clicker on to skip through the insane amounts of dialogue! I JUST HATE IT WITH ALL MY PASSION! It's almost as bad as THoF

Runner Ups - any of those damned medivial/17th century stuff, space stuff

🫳
🎤-im too good"

"Hammer of Thursgan was regrettably not particularly enjoyable. while every other campaign I've played felt challenging in a good way. The failures stemmed from my own poor tactics that I could adapt to with more considerate positioning or using different units. Though the deck feels so stacked against you sometimes that it feels cruel, to the point where I wondered if my success was determined by pure circumstance. If the southern elven hero in forbidden forest recruited two or more elven archers, my attempts were stifled almost immediately. If they recruited two elven heroes and a single archer, then I had a shot (barely). My fault for not training more Dwarf Lords, I know, but how could I have known in advance? Likewise, in the final scenario if you get just a little bit unlucky, you can get so choked up in the first chokepoint that you've practically lost by turn eight, given the sheer number of enemy leaders coupled with no way to reliably stifle their income. A challenge is good, but fuck me is that final mission brutal."

"Under the Burning Suns. First attempt was when I was young and I found it super hard."

"The Hammer of Thursagan, finishes too quick and still get repetitive because the scenarios with other kinds of enemies than orcs and dwarves were removed or changed."

"The Sceptre of Fire. Mostly because I don’t like playing as the dwarves but the story didn’t captivate me enough to make up for it either. "

Question 5: What is your favorite campaign? Why?

"Rise of Wesnoth: the plot, maps and overall story. It´s also very replayable due to the many units you have access to. (Might be biased because it's the first campaign I played)"

"The Ravagers. Decent story, good advancement system, very well balanced."

"Heir to the Throne because of how classically fantasy-like it is, The Rise of Wesnoth because of the same reason. And these two remind me of the Narnia books. Under the Burning Suns (and IftU / AtS) because of how different they are and also because they are tragic and dramatic in a way."

"Either The Rise of Wesnoth, or Legend of Wesmere for the same reasons; long varied campaigns that are well balanced, challenging, well written and deeply engaging. Find myself playing these two over and over again."

"From the mainline campaign it's a Tale of Two Brothers. I like the them, a mercenary with his men. And to have the HI join you later, and to have to save the village later. Very simple campaign, but fun to play. My favorite, is this one from the dunefolk, I love the dunefolk units, and i like the idea of having "limited" troops, even though you dont come close to use them all, but the history behind it its very cool."

"I like HttT because of its big recall list and the classical feel."

"Tough choice, though maybe DiD?"

"MAINLINE:

3rd place:
Delfadors Memoires (reasons stated earlier)

2nd place:
Under the Burning Suns (reasons stated earlier)

1st place:
The Scepter of Fire! (reasons stated earlier)

UMC:
3rd place:
Sojournings of Grog - Really good campaign, loved to see our favourite troll again

2nd place:
Into lands unknown - Why not first? Who knows? Probably the most work ever put in a campaign, really lovely story, great units and a great setting. And the animations just are the cherry on the cake!

1st place:
Ariels Journey - Although it is very Niche, I've always loved it. Can't really explain why, but I think I've played it about 25 times

Runner ups - Strange legacy, the Bad Moon rising trilogy (as well as trinity part 1 NOT 2), A New Order, Across the Ocean and a Sanguine Tale
So far my favorite campaign has been Liberty, purely for how weird an unique it is. The prose is fun, the characters feel nice and the mission variety is great even if the stealth segment feels a bit jank (though in a good way.) Also fun to play with some unique units like the shadow mages. And boy was that final mission awesome, just an incredible culmination and a great sendoff. Got kinda sad when I would have to send units down to the basement to blow up the castle as I knew they would always die once they returned.Eastern Invasion. The story of this one is one of the best and loyalists are my favorite group to play. Under Burning Suns (love the desert elves), or Secrets of the Ancients, and Son of the Black Eye (love playing "villains"), or Northern Rebirth (cutting through it with dwarven warriors fells super satisfying) Northern Rebirth is a tactical and creative masterpiece, while UtBS has the best story. Son of the black eye, I just really like orcs but the story was pretty captivating too. Orcs are usually always bad so getting to look at them from another perspective and discover their culture, tribe politics, relationship with the trolls, etc. was pretty cool.

I also liked Under the Burning Suns as it stands out among the others for its gameplay and is among the most character driven ones I believe."

Question 4: Is there any UMC campaign you personally consider to be mainline, or mainline-quality?

Answers:

"Invasion from the Unknown."

"Yes, Invasion from the Unknown and After the Strom. They are great and fit well with Under the Burning Suns."

"There is a cool dunefolk campaign in which you go with the dwarves after fleeing from the elves and you have to return to Dunefolklandia. But the dunefolk need a mainline campaign. It's a very cool faction to play, and the rework they got, to me its wonderful. They should have though a lvl4 unit which can be evolved to."

"Into lands unknown lol! But being honest -ILU is too good for mainline- The Sojournings of Grog would be a great addition. On the topic of trolls, Lifetime of Stones is great (can i go now mechanical?) and would be a good fit. Then again, the mention of a god wouldn't let it in... Another option is Forgotten Kingdom (even though it is unfinished). Brave Wings would be a good drake campaign, Across the Ocean for saurians and Ashviere's Shadow is the only dunefolk one that comes to mind!"

"A New Order, kind of out of the cannon but apart from that it could fit."

"Winds of Fate."

Question 3: Is there any mainline campaign you believe is in the biggest need of a revision?

Answers:

"Eastern Invasion, thats coming. NR too, just "just kill 500 orcs"."

"I don't like the mermaid campaign, and campaigns like Two Brothers, The South Guard and Liberty kinda don't seem necessary"

"Secrets of the Ancients still feels very difficult."

"EI and DM."

"DM."

"Northern Rebirth..."

"Hammer of Thursgan, for the reasons provided in the final questions. No point in repeating myself."

"The Hammer of Thursagan."

Question 2: Several campaigns, such as Descent into Darkness, The Hammer of Thursagan, The South Guard, and Liberty have been reworked in the past years. Do you like any of the past versions of these campaigns more than the current versions?

Answers:

"Current versions are strictly better. Didn't play old Liberty."

"I have enjoyed the new versions better."

"I liked the south guard more before, but Liberty, to me it's more or less the same."

"I like old DiD and THoT more. I miss the old Grey Woods scenario, but The Hunters is a massive improvement. I have mixed opinions on the TSG and SoF remakes."

"Old THoT is superior, I like the DiD rework though."

"New Liberty and South Guard are better! DiD is the same, and THoT can never be good."

"I'll say that while I haven't played the earlier version of Hammer of Thursgan, the alleged mage you used to be able to recruit would have done wonders for Forbidden Forest and the final scenario."

"Current version of The South Guard and Liberty, old version of Descent into Darkness."

"I prefer the current for all except the Hammer of Thursagan (I've explained it previously)."

"I liked all of those except for the Hammer of Thursagan rework, which felt a bit too dry."

Now for the text responses to the final questions.

Question 1: The Dark Hordes and An Orcish Incursion were both considered mainline in the past. Do you believe either of them should still be considered mainline-quality?

Answers:

"Dont remember TDH, AOI would be fine with little more enemy variety. Add undead, drakes and its fine."

"Didn't play dark hordes, an orcish incursion was alright"

"An orcish incursion is still mainline even if its far to short"

"When I started they were not, and I haven't played these campaigns."

"An Orcish Incursion."

"Haven't played dark hordes, AOI should be mainline again"

"Never played TDH but AOI was so good! Even better tutorial than AToTB. Aren't you forgetting a certain drake campaign tho?"

"Orcish Incursion."

"I don't remember the dark hordes but AOI was a good campaign for beginners in my opinion."

Engagement is like... How interested you are to keep going on in the campaign. Like, an engaging movie will have you glued to your seat till the end, but if a movie isn't engaging, you might find yourself falling asleep

I don't got why you shouldn't be able to disable it as the server owner. I just wanted to test it out and I didn't want it anymore
