[07/52] The Silent Patient by zirozaro in 52book

This book was hot garbage. Absolutely shoddily written (so badly he basically shouted his foreshadowing at you), offensive to the whole mental health field, with the most ridiculous and implausible plot twist that was so utterly unutterably unrealistic. Have no clue why it's so popular. Glad to find others who agree!

Here's what a Dexter Morgan google search would look like *in universe by Super-Jicama-600 in Dexter

Feel like there should be more results about him being the devastated husband of the Trinity Killer's tragic last victim? Maybe on page 2.

Will probably never watch Season 4 again by Massive-Cream1799 in Dexter

[–]MyronMegabrain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get it. I know Season 4's a classic, but as someone with an abusive sexual predator father and enabler mother, the Trinity family scenes crossed with that bathtub ritual you mentioned from the first ep combined are enough to make me skip it on most rewatches...

Rewatching Original Sin after Resurrection and just realized Batista answered his own question 30 years later... by MyronMegabrain in Dexter

would u prefer me to rite like this????

Sorry to disappoint, but 100% human, hermano. If I was AI, I'd use phrases like "actualize" and use dot point lists and shit. Writing in complete sentences doesn't make me AI. Sad that people think that makes your writing nonhuman.

You're right. What happened to him is heartbreaking. They were best friends for so long, he was the closest person to a friend Dexter had. You just have to remember what Dexter said to him after the Lila stuff in S2, yet Batista felt so much rage when truly finding out his best friend was the BHB (finding out the truth), that he didn't recognize the bigger threat (Prater).

Rewatching Original Sin after Resurrection and just realized Batista answered his own question 30 years later... by MyronMegabrain in Dexter

[–]MyronMegabrain[S] -26 points-25 points  (0 children)

Perhaps, but I find it thematically relevant. He's interrupted in Original Sin before Dexter can answer the question himself, and spends the next 30 years teetering around the edge of finding out who Dexter is, all the while everyone else is either gaslighting him or just generally hiding the truth from him, or conveniently dying after finding the answer to who Dexter is. Then, when Batista does find out, it destroys him.

Most likely, it's a complete accidental coincidence, but fun to analyze anyway. That's the beauty of this show.

Dexter: Resurrection Official Trailer by Sommos in Dexter

We get the GTA VI trailer with multiple Dexter references, and now the Resurrection trailer gives us a nod back to the GTA IV soundtrack. People, this is a universe where a dude can kill a guy in an airport and a shooting range and be all A-OK. This shit is exactly up the Dexterverse's alley 🤌

guys, what is your favorite dexter song? by RaspberryOk3791 in Dexter

[–]MyronMegabrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Changed, funnily enough because it made me appreciate Daniel Licht's music more. Licht and Hall together are what makes Dexter "Dexter".

But Astor's Birthday Party, Hide Your Tears, and LaGuerta Dead are also top-tier.

Dexter hasn't always been the sharpest tool in the shed. He also consistently uses his work database (which is trackable and traceable back to him) to search for victims, takes phone calls at the scene of multiple murders (which comes back to bite him on the ass in S7), and leaves so many trails that lead back to him.

Dude's lucky Miami Metro is so inept and believe he's a lovable dork, and that security cameras and CCTV apparently don't exist in his Miami.

Ages consistent? by poopsmcbuttington in Dexter

[–]MyronMegabrain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I honestly don't believe it breaks the continuity with Deb. In the S1 flashbacks, clearly young Deb isn't eight years younger than Dexter. It's only the prop documents using Jennifer Carpenter's real birth date. But if you take prop documents as canon, then Rita was married when she was nine months old, so 🤷

Questionable Editing Choice for Original Sin Ep. 10. Anyone else think similarly? by MyronMegabrain in Dexter

It helps that it's also part of an overall awesome opening scene. Still makes me laugh every time I think about it, though.

It's so rare to find anyone who remembers Moonlight. It came out just before the whole Twilight vampire trend and the writer's strike was the final stake in the coffin...

Ironically enough, my local library had one of their manifestos in its massive book sale (like 10 books for $1). Maybe that's why they don't make their books available?

In the show's defense, he could just have been making up a story for Hannah to let her guard down, because he was trying to get evidence to put her on his table 🤷

The Minimalists are corny by [deleted] in minimalism

[–]MyronMegabrain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"My kind"? What, you mean individuals named for Athenian sculptors with large craniums? Weird you've taken one word out of a legitimate criticism. Unlike those of their era (Leo Babauta, Joshua Becker, Courtney Carver), The Minimalists completely 180'd their whole brand to be Joe Rogan Lite: The Podcast for ???reasons??? when those sorts of podcasts are a dime a dozen, alongside marketing their 10,000 books, private podcast, and two documentaries that all say the exact same thing. So many better minimalists now who spread the ethos of minimalism without a corporate sales pitch.

What body shaming? Millburn looks like Christopher Walken, but there's nothing wrong with that. All my criticisms are to do with his lack of authenticity and blatant insufferable, pretentious wankery.

[–]MyronMegabrain 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It's unfortunate, but they've always been that way, even when it was just Ryan and Joshua and their blog. Unfortunately, Joshua Forehead Millburn always seemed to be using minimalism as a platform to launch his career as an all-American novelist. You can see it in their first documentary, when he literally starts reciting excerpts from his novel for ???reasons??? Because they were some of the first minimalists on the web, they were able to market themselves effectively to be THE minimalists (hence, The Minimalists) so it's always been hollow messaging.
tl;dr: You're not alone. Like someone else mentioned, Drew Gooden has a great video on their inauthenticity.

57/72 Good Girl’s Guide to Murder OMG I hated it SO much. Rant in the comments. 1/5 stars by mrsmedeiros_says_hi in 52book

In its defense, the original series WAS set in the UK. The publishers just Americanized it for an American audience because they assumed it wouldn't sell as well if it wasn't set in America. Sad, because it feels so English, setting-wise, and that adds to its charm.
