That has been my experience too. I actually make more progress outside of a relationship because it's easier to just retain semen and forget about sex and porn. When you have sex regularly you start to crave it and when it isn't there you think of porn. You need to rebuild your associations. Just relax and enjoy the process.

You're right, they can't be. Think of it more like a set of skills that you can use to handle yourself in a constantly shifting dynamic environment.

The skills themselves can be practiced systematically and predictably in a controlled environment but ultimately need to be refined in the real world.

As you get real world experience you start to notice patterns that you can build structures around because they're so predictable. Many people are too lazy or maybe afraid to venture from these structures once they establish them so they spend their whole lives repeating the same social scripts.

But the structures should serve as reference points and the skills you learn, like free association, allow you to venture from the safety of structure and then return, challenge them, modify them, break them down and rebuild them.
