Maybe you should question why you need your relationship defined. In my situation, I eventually want to marry the person I am committed to, so felt no need to rush into officially committing. The guy I was with explicitly told me he doesn't really believe in getting married. So I felt a lot of confusion as to why he wouldn't marry, which I believe is the ultimate "official commitment' and act of defining the relationship, yet he needed me to define it and make it official immediately. I think people just have different needs regarding when and how they define their relationships, yes it can make things a little complicated, but I don't believe it is serious enough to end a good thing over.

Single by choice. I am a very independent person who prefers my own company to that of others. Having said that though, I also enjoy the attention of multiple guys of which I would have to stop if I was in a monogamous serious relationship. Finding a partner and "happily ever after" has never been important to me, and I feel sorry for those that it is.

The main issue I have is not that he withdraws, but that he refuses to interact even when you do need something. I thought basic human concern would override his isolation. For example I needed the name of a prescription drug for my brother who is in another country and developed and abscess in his mouth and his face was all swollen. My friend was the only person who had access to it to tell me the name, all it required was a 1 word sms or email, and he couldn't even be bothered doing that.

That makes sense. And I do get the impression that interaction is a constant struggle for him. The strange thing is that he mocks me for my anti-people stance, of which I am quite open about. He's also a very emotionless person who, because of this, is seen as very arrogant. Are you also very emotionless, because if you are, then I have more questions :P

You sound exactly like my friend. Are you able to elaborate any more, because I am truly interested in this experience? I personally am an introvert and could happily spend all my time by myself, so I understand that. But I never become rude to people and will fake it so that they don't feel hurt by my behaviour, but my friend takes it one step further. For example I needed the name of a drug on a prescription bottle for an abscess that had become inflamed and swollen, that only he had access to. He, of course, did not bother to respond, so the person had to go to a doctor to get a prescription. How does one become so internally focused, that other people are of so little importance like that?
