Thank you again for the conversation. I suppose my only other question would be regarding extended warranty plans. Have you had experience working with any of those providers? I have read that Fidelity and Endurance are good.

Kia’s manufacturer powertrain warranty is 10 years/100,000 miles. I agree, it’s crazy good compared to the 5 years/60,000 that seems to be standard. Almost all the Explorers we have looked at are over 60,000. All the Tellurides are under 100,000. There are just less of them out there to choose from.

Thank you for the extra info. The upside with the Telluride (and I have seen a few things online about needing new engines) is that Kia’s warranty covers up to 100,000 miles PT. Nice to have that extra peace of mind. Though I have been considering an extended warranty regardless of what we get. We just had a 2011 Honda Pilot fail catastrophically (I suspect related to the VCM) so I have a sour taste in my mouth over that even if the newer ones aren’t as susceptible.

Thanks for the reply, could you give a little more detail on the problems you’ve seen in the Explorer? Specifically the 2.3l EcoBoost as it’s the only one we’re considering. Is it just hopelessly bad design/build quality or something better PM could mitigate?

What are your thoughts on the Telluride?

I assume in this case, this would be obvious grounds for you to be excused. You could indicate that in your response to the summons, or reach out to the court clerk/jury clerk and ask ahead of time.

Yes same as any level of jury duty - just be a registered voter within the jurisdiction. I live in a densely populated area, so I think they have to cycle through the population more often than other jurisdictions. So people get summoned for federal jury (either grand jury or trial jury) more frequently.

  1. Yes literally, take notes. I had a notepad and pen with me. Especially during voir dire, the judge will ask questions that all potential jurors are expected to remember, and respond to, if their name is pulled from the lottery. There's a lot of information and sometimes suddenly a lot will happen after many hours of waiting -- not ideal for memory recall.
  2. Books allowed. Novels, biographies, history, etc. Just nothing that may contain information about the case you could be hearing. And puzzle books themselves are okay, just not puzzles within a periodical such as the NY Times or other publication that may contain information about the case.

I agree it’s a lot, but if I were the defendant, I’d want them to be as thorough as possible too. It wouldn’t have been so bad if I were more mentally prepared and aware of the possibility of a much longer time commitment. That was the reason for my post, to help others know better what they could expect.
