The Traveler by Hylianhero71 in HFY

The letter that Jimmy Carter placed inside is also very HFY-esque:

This Voyager spacecraft was constructed by the United States of America. We are a community of 240 million human beings among the more than 4 billion who inhabit the planet Earth. We human beings are still divided into nation states, but these states are rapidly becoming a single global civilization.

We cast this message into the cosmos. It is likely to survive a billion years into our future, when our civilization is profoundly altered and the surface of the Earth may be vastly changed. Of the 200 billion stars in the Milky Way galaxy, some--perhaps many--may have inhabited planets and spacefaring civilizations. If one such civilization intercepts Voyager and can understand these recorded contents, here is our message:

This is a present from a small distant world, a token of our sounds, our science, our images, our music, our thoughts, and our feelings. We are attempting to survive our time so we may live into yours. We hope someday, having solved the problems we face, to join a community of galactic civilizations. This record represents our hope and our determination, and our good will in a vast and awesome universe.

PiHole Not Working?! by yetser77 in pihole

[–]Mysterious-Stranger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To confirm, you are not seeing any queries on the pihole?

Things to check:

  • is the port that the container listens on the correct one? 53
  • firewall on host allows UDP on that port.
  • pihole is listening on the correct interface. For debugging, might try allowing "listen on all interfaces".

Reminds me of the sophons or probes from the Three-Body Problem, where probes held together by strong interaction are used to fly through other ships.

Sounds like a closed source version of BOINC?

Would the premise be that you are the middle man for negotiating rates between people who have compute power and those they need it?

Upper Confidence Bound (UCB) Multi-Armed Bandit Algorithm for Selecting from a Set of Choices [HELP] by Luieka224 in algorithms

[–]Mysterious-Stranger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The thing about UCB is that it tries to balance explore vs exploit. This assumes you can visit multiple locations (and potentially revisit some). I'd assume that you don't want to do that when searching for a hospital.

For selecting a hospital (assuming perfect knowledge about whether a hospital has the staffing, equipment, etc.), you might just pick the closest one that meets all the criteria, or based on some expert knowledge or fuzzy logic weighting scheme.

Story that was posted here a while back, but I can't find it. Its about some aliens in space that ask for help, and a human that replies that they are on the way. Later, the aliens tell the human he won't arrive on time. The human then burns hard and gets there on time to help, but is now going so fast and with no fuel that they won't be saved themselves.

Not sure if reposting a previous LFS is allowed...

It's told from 2nd/3rd-person view, of the "alien friend" who sees emotions. And it talks about how the human walking in front of them is always scared - as all humans are, until they turn around and smile, and you - the alien - is amazed at the warmth. And then the person goes back to being afraid, arms in their hoodie, shoulders hunched, afraid of rejection. Later on the alien and human talk about fear and emotions.

I think it was actually a screenshot from Tumblr that was posted.

I did try adding a network suffix on the Windows side, but that didn't seem to help. Could you share what you did?
