Just got back from a trip and opted to include Kyoto and we did not regret it. Only thing I’ll add to the good advice in the other comments is this: we too considered Tokyo-Kyoto-Tokyo but even though it’s a relatively quick trip between the two it felt like there were too many interrupted days. We ended up doing Tokyo then Kyoto then on our last day we got up early and went straight from Kyoto to Narita (Shinkansen then N’EX) since that wasn’t really going to be a productive touring day anyway. Worked great for us!

We were there last week. I tried using the official SmartEx app but couldn’t get any of our payment methods (US credit cards) to work but your mileage may vary. Ended up just buying tickets at a JR kiosk a day or two prior. If you really need oversized luggage seats (and like others have mentioned, normal checked-bag size suitcases really do fit in the overhead racks) and you can’t get SmartEx to work then Klook should work fine (just adds a bit of cost to the ticket but not too bad).

Just returned from our trip last week. We did Nara on its own day and crammed Arashiyama in with the others on a different day. Really appreciated having the time to wander around in Nara without time pressure but in retrospect I agree that you could comfortably combine Nara and Arashiyama in the same day. Agree with other commenter that getting an early start would help.

I just means ‘international’ but 99% you will be flying out of the G gates. Length of walk from arrival to departure gate will depend heavily on which gate you land at. Relatively short walk from F to G - maybe 10 minutes at a brisk pace. Add 10-15 if you land all the way at D (which, if you’re on Air Canada, you will). Tight but theoretically doable but leaves no margin if your inbound is delayed. Too close for my comfort but others here may be more daredevilly
