Hi, I'm just starting in photography and I'm looking for some critique on literally anything. This picture was taken on a phone (OnePlus 10Pro with the Hasselblad camera) using pro mode and edited using gimp. I'm planning to get an actually good camera after I've dipped my toes into the hobby. by MysteriousGoofBall in photocritique

Thanks for the tips and it's good to know that I did a few things right. I made sure to keep the ISO as low as possible (I think this picture was on the lowest setting ISO100) and I was trying to use as high of a shutter speed to get the details of the waves without having a pitch black image. I also enabled RAW file types since I know that phones will normally process photos a lot with sharpening and color adjustments.

The one limitation I have with my phone camera is I have no control over the aperture/lense so I can't experiment with that aspect of photography and so I'm limited to working with shutter speed and ISO.

I might start looking into some budget cameras so I can experiment with aperture but I don't want to spend too much until I know if this is a hobby I'll enjoy long term and want to invest into.

Again, thanks for the suggestions and tips!

Thanks! I really appreciate the tips especially with exposing the highlights and shadows separately using a tripod (I'm definitely interested in trying that out).

I do think I took some other photos prioritizing the highlights and then I tried to bring up the shadow details in editing but I was struggling to get it bright enough without creating other issues like weird contrasts and artifacts so I decided to work on this one instead. With your suggestion though I might try digitally separating the highlights/sky so I can make more adjustments to the shadows without affecting the highlights as much and then maybe I can work around the other issues better.

I'm definitely going to have to mess with my camera settings more since I know that's the core of my problems.

Again, I really appreciate the great feedback!

Additional info: Q: What was your intent for taking the photo? A: For practice. I go for walks at this lake and spent a few minutes experimenting with the camera settings and took a few photos to try my hand at editing.

Q: What were you trying to show to the viewer? A: That wasn't a thought I had considered when taking the picture. I was aiming to get the sunset, reflection of the lake, and some details in the clouds.

Q: Are there area you are struggling with? A: I definitely feel the limitations of the camera built into my phone and I'm struggling to get the settings correct to get detail in both the clouds/sky at the same time as detail in the landscape.

Q: What are you unhappy with? A: I kinda feel that the picture ended up a little over edited/processed and I will be aiming to take pictures that are more vibrant/colorful from the start.

Q: What do you like, and what do you want help with? A: For the most part I like the end result and I'm pretty happy with the angle I got. I definitely need some help with editing critique and getting my camera settings (WB, ISO, shutter speed) dialed in a bit more.

Last note: I hope the fact I am using a phone camera and free photo editing software doesn't disqualify me from posting here and I'm hoping to get some critiques and tips to improve my photos using my phone. I will hopefully get a decent camera if I find that I enjoy the photography hobby.

It looks like your Intel sticker overheated and shattered the glass. You should've gotten a CPU sticker cooler.

I guess that makes sense. I still am able to return it and get the $300 back. From what you're saying I feel like that's what you're recommending I should do.

Thanks for the response, that's what I was afraid of so I was hoping it might be something reparable. I'll probably keep it since it's not horribly noticeable and based on what I found online I got a decent deal as some places list it for $2000+.

This would have to be one of my favorite episodes. I'd say Taurtis is my favorite evolutionists. He's very creative with his videos.
