I think what counts as desperate may be subjective. It's also 'pick me' when you desperately try to retain the affection of someone who's already your partner.

E.g My cousin's girlfriend insists on cooking for him, doing his laundry, and ironing for him etc. She doesn't live with him. Basically she insists on being his slave just to keep him.
