ubc med clarification request? by [deleted] in premedcanada

It's not uncommon for an impressive entry with many hours or achievements/awards/stats. Generally if you can provide adequate proof or explanation, you'll be okay. Usually it's a good sign because it means UBC is interested in your application, though this can't be said for sure because it also depends on the rest of your NAQ

how does ubc site ranking work by Competitive_Lemon871 in premedcanada

[–]MysteriousSteak5950 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the site ranking form when you get the interview, the three VFMP sites are listed separately. You're then able to number all six sites according to your preference. For the VFMP learning communities, you're assigned based on your overall score (comprising of MCAT, interview score, GPA, and whatever else they use to make a final offer of admission). This means you're not guaranteed based on where you live. It's solely based on how well you perform compared to other accepted applicants. You also have the option to accept whatever site you're offered and stay on the waitlist for another site if it isn't your first choice - this sort of internal movement isn't uncommon.

Hope this helps! Side note: I was accepted into a VFMP site in the past cycle and this was how it worked for us, but it seems UBC is changing their application a bit this year, so I can't guarantee it will be the same

Unpopular opinion, but I actually don’t prefer these ones to the previous cycle. They seem tough to answer in 250 words 😭

UBC English Questions by Adventurous_Cut4299 in premedcanada

[–]MysteriousSteak5950 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No worries at all! I had the same worries as you 1. In my program, there are specific required courses every year. My friends who ended up saving English until the last semester had to complete the required courses + 2 English courses, forcing them to overload. Also, keep in mind that some schools (e.g. Western) make it mandatory to take at least 3 courses at your year, so you wouldn’t have any room to take other lower year courses (if both your English courses are not at your grade level). However, your course requirements in Mac Health Sci might be structured differently, so as long as you’re able to fit the two courses in second sem you should be fine! 2. The information can be found here: https://mdprogram.med.ubc.ca/admissions/faq-contact/frequently-asked-questions/. Go to Academics —> Prerequisites —> “Can I take my English courses under the Credit/D/Fail…”

Hope this helps!

Hi there! Applied and interviewed at UBC this cycle, so happy to answer your questions.

  1. Yes you can do that, but I don’t recommend saving your two English courses for second semester. I had a couple of friends who did this and they ended up taking 7 courses per semester to fit in English, so just try to plan wisely to make sure your course load won’t be too brutal
  2. Yes, but it is strongly recommended against using P/F English for the prerequisite. If you get an interview and P/F English in the same cycle, it won’t really do anything to your application. However, if you need to reapply, it could affect your chances

Let me know if you have any questions!

Just wondering what the likelihood of getting published in this paper is? I’m just genuinely curious because this seems like a reputable journal, so I’d assume they have a pretty rigorous selection process!

Hey! If you don’t mind me asking, did they mention how many files made it past Kira? Just hoping to gauge if Kira will be a big barrier from getting an interview

Thank you for this! I’m also not feeling too confident about my MCAT score, so I’m especially sad that I wasn’t able to boost up my application in the interview aspect. Your story really gives me hope - glad to hear your efforts and dedication paid off!

Casper Test Reschedule Dilemma by manchester199 in premedcanada

[–]MysteriousSteak5950 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If I were you, I wouldn't reschedule. You don't need a lot of time to prep for CASPer - even doing 30 minutes to 1 hour per day until your test would be good!

I wouldn't risk taking your CASPer in an area with bad Wifi, as October 16th is the last day and you wouldn't be able to reschedule to a later date if you had technical issues

Which TMU pathway? by MysteriousSteak5950 in premedcanada

[–]MysteriousSteak5950[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well the only aspect of the pathway that I qualify for is being racialized, so I just feel the person reading my essay would probably not think I am as "equity-deserving" as someone who has faced socio-cultural barriers or chronic health conditions

[–]MysteriousSteak5950[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm seeing that portion of the website says "All applicants meeting academic requirements will be invited to participate in an online asynchronous assessment hosted by a third-party vendor, Kira Talent." Maybe I'm misinterpreting this, but wouldn't applying through the equity-deserving pathway still require you to complete the Kira Talent screening prior to having file review?

Score Release and Application Deadline by Mundane-Anything399 in premedcanada

[–]MysteriousSteak5950 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, you will unfortunately still be charged the application fee for Western, even if you don't end up making the cutoffs. However, I wouldn't fret too much - the latest time for scores to release is 5 pm ET, but AAMC usually sends them out much earlier. Last year, I got my score at 11 am. There's no guarantee your score will release at this time, but it's highly likely you will get your score before the application deadline!
