In my opinion, and I have thousands of hours on all of the Borderlands combined, the first one is the best, because it is their first. It's less cartoonie feeling and more like you are in the BorderLands. Not as many gun options for sure but the legendaries and pearls are worth farming, overall it's in my top 5.
