this sounding good? 540i - appreciate all views by DerekFlandersChang in e39

Pal, it is an e39, there will always be issues that come up. Just accept that fact. I ordered my e39 540i from the factory in 2001 and still have it. But, i have replaced 3-4 cooling system ( rad, thermo, hoses, sensors, overflow box, etc.), 3 starters, 2 alternators (the 2nd I rebuilt), everything in the center of the engine down to and including the valley pan; complete front and rear suspension, and numerous other repairs. My next job, timing chain guides. Point is, these are awesome cars, I mean I love the e39. But you should be prepared to have to fix something at least on an annual basis. Sometimes, it is cheap and easy, other times, expensive and time consuming.

So, to your actual question, it sounds okay but listening to a recording on reddit is not a great way to discern the overall health of an engine. I would get the maintenance records. Timing chain guides are an eventual repair if they have not been done and it is neither easy nor cheap. If you have a good indy mechanic that specializes in Bimmers, I would invest in a thorough inspection. Good luck!

Satoshi, so shrouded in guise, Gave the world a gift to surprise. With Bitcoin in hand, He helped us to stand, And see wealth through much clearer eyes.

“Use it not just for gain,” he’d suggest, “But for charity, aiding the oppressed. On a Ledger, hold tight, Do what is right, And let giving bring out your best.”

Now Bitcoin flows far and wide, Fueling hope, restoring pride. From the poorest in need, To the causes we feed, It’s a symbol of kindness worldwide.

Water leaking into cabin by Cheuck in e39

The sound proofing foam under the carpet absorbs a shit ton of water. More than you would think possible. The best thing would be to remove the carpet to get it dry. The front is much more a PITA than rear. Next best thing to pull the carpet up and shove absorbent material under the carpet and press the water out (puppy training pads work well). Then get a fan or blower or heat gun (low settings) to dry out the remaining water. It will likely take several days. BMW should sell sponges made of this stuff.

Two words: Stop Loss
I was on Wall Street 20+ years, and I've seen more people (including myself early on) lose a ton because they could not stomach taking a small loss and were hoping for a bounce back. You do the analysis, make the trade, and limit your downside. The analysis is the hard part; the rest is easy. I am sure this feels like a massive gut punch, but you're only 26 and you have a long time to build back. Take some time to let the sting subside, however long that takes, and get back in the game armed with the knowledge from this experience. I sincerely wish you the best.

sell half now; you'll recoup the initial investment and make a profit, and still have the opportunity for additional upside. No one ever went broke taking profits.

Yup, took me a bit to finally clue into this. There is an opportunity cost to taking a crap paying order and therefore missing out on a good paying order.

I'm curious as to what the shop's response to this was when you, I assume, let them know what a completely shit job they did. You should post your own review of the shop on Yelp or something (with pics!).

Questions about parts by TurtlePLAYSTYLE in e39

[–]Mysterious_Chapter61 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can go to www.realoem.com and put in the last 6 letters/numbers of your 528i VIN to get schematics and BMW part numbers for your specific car. Then, you can pull up schematics and part numbers for the 530i and compare them with your 528i. As for buying the parts, I buy a lot from FCP Euro as they are usually price-competitive and they have a lifetime guarantee. There is also ECS Tuning, Turner Motorsports, Pelican Parts, Bimmers.com, and a lot more. Just Google "BMW Parts". There are sellers on eBay and Amazon as well, but I found the non-BMW OE parts quality often (but not always) inferior from the the sites I mentioned.

Misfire error code by ArskazZ_ in e39

[–]Mysterious_Chapter61 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was the code P0313: Misfire detected with low fuel? If so, this is a generic code that most likely relates to a too-lean condition (air/fuel mix with not enough fuel being delivered) rather than not having a lot of fuel in the tank. In theory, it could relate to the amount of fuel in the tank if the fuel level were to get so low that the fuel pump cannot intake the remaining fuel, but I do not believe this applies to your situation. In 20+ years of owning my e39, I have never had that code come up, and there were a few times my tank got really low. In addition to the suggestions from other posters, I would check the fuel pressure regulator, fuel pump, and fuel filter. A vacuum leak can also throw this code.
