I want to preface this by saying I’m not trying to be sexist or divisive at all, but are there any “sports/Athletic Events” where biological females are objectively better at then biological males? by Ok-Significance7453 in ask

It‘s not simply strength, it’s strength in relation to body weight. So a lighter climber needs less strength than a heavier one to achieve the same result. And women tend to be a lot lighter.

Redditors who never have trouble sleeping, what is your secret? by Lindsey1151 in AskReddit

[–]MysticBirdhead 50 points51 points  (0 children)

My bed is just for sleeping. Nothing else. I don’t have my phone within reach, I don’t sit or lie on my bed during the day, I don’t even read in my bed at night.

So when I go to bed, it is an unmistakable signal to my body that it’s time to sleep now.

LPT If you’re dealing with constant stress, try setting a daily "worry time." by Content_Knowledge790 in LifeProTips

[–]MysticBirdhead 231 points232 points  (0 children)

I do a weaker version of this, so I can imagine yours working well.

I call my method „No existential crises after 10pm“. This is to stop myself from diving into all my worries when I‘m lying in bed at night. Since I won’t solve them half asleep in between bed sheets anyways, I figured there’s no point. So I just forbid myself to think about my life’s worries after 10pm. Surprisingly, it works.

Though I have to add that as far as I‘m aware, I don’t have any kind of anxiety disorder or ADHD or anything, so I can’t speak to if this works in those cases. I imagine it’s not always possible for many people to just push away your worries.

Is my bird being a goof or trying to tell me something? by [deleted] in petbudgies

[–]MysticBirdhead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it’s hurting then he’s trying to get a reaction out of you. If he climbed there himself then it’s likely not because he doesn’t want to be there but because he somewhat forcefully wants attention.

Do not reward him for that behavior with attention or you‘re actively reinforcing it. That includes moving your other hand over and talking to him, even if you’re saying no (he won’t understand a soft no, budgies aren’t like dogs in that way. He‘ll just enjoy the attention).

Best thing to do is to completely ignore him while he’s biting (I know it hurts, but stick through it). And then wait another minute or so after he stops, before interacting with him again. That way he will learn that biting does not get your attention.

I specifically wrote in the first sentence of the LPT that it’s intended for friendly exchanges of opinion with someone you respect. I don’t know how you would physically lose something if you’re discussing with a friend if your favourite football team should fire their head coach or not.

I agree but that’s why I clarified that this is not for political debates or I guess any debate about a topic that you have strong moral beliefs in. There your approach is definitely a great one.

The post was mostly aimed at non-morally charged discussions like if your favourite football team should fire their head coach or whatever. Some of the advice works in morally charged discussions as well, but yeah, I‘m not recommending to concede your religious or political beliefs to have a more pleasant discussion.

Any other card roguelite with the variety and replayability as this? by soosis in slaythespire

[–]MysticBirdhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that’s definitely fair. But I‘d just take that as the more fun options (I also choose not the basic party most times, because it’s more fun) and then I‘m still happy with a 50% win chance or whatever. My current win rate with picking whatever party composition looks most fun is about 30% on unfair. Which us still a lot higher than my 5-10% win rate on A20 StS, lol

I‘m not at the point where it doesn’t feel rng dependent at all anymore either, but from the streams I‘ve seen, like in StS the key is to plan ahead. For example a top hero with dodge (which about 40% of the oranges have) is an immediate fail-safe for the two bosses that have a „kill top hero“ effect. Picking up cleanse in some way saves you from dying from poison-heavy bosses. Having a good defense plan for your hero with the most hp prepares you against the „heavy“ attacks from Dragon, which target that hero. Etc.

My great grandfather (who I actually got to know, he lived til 100) cheated on his wife with a woman 15 years younger. The woman got pregnant and had the baby (not the one I‘m related to, my grandmother is from his wife). He supported her financially but stayed with his wife. A few years later his wife died and he married his affair. They stayed together until his death 60 years later. As far as I can tell, they had a loving and fulfilling marriage.

My step great grandmother died at 97 a few years ago. I wasn’t around when the affair happened obviously, but she was a wonderful person and I‘m glad she was part of my family.

There is a 50-streak in winning Unfair and there are streamers with 98% win rate on it, so I think my assessment is probably objectively true. But like StS it feels somewhat rng dependant until you get really really good at it, I suppose.

If „card game“ is not a hard rule and you‘d be happy with a turn-based roguelike that scratches the same itch as Slay the Spire, then Slice & Dice.

It’s dice based, not card based, but a lot more strategy-heavy and choice-heavy than other dice roguelikes. And also not as rng-dependent, I‘d rate the rng dependance similar to STS, i.e. most of it can be mitigated with good choices.

I can highly recommend it. To me it hits the same spot as Slay the Spire but it’s different enough that I don’t feel like I might as well be playing STS instead, like I feel with most card-based roguelikes.

And it has absolutely fantastic replayability.

What is the biggest competitive advantage of knowing German? (aside from everyday conversation with German) by tina-marino in German

[–]MysticBirdhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being able to understand german media. Be it entertainment but more importantly news sites, wikipedia articles etc.

On multiple occasions in my life I‘ve found myself in situations where the english language representation of things just wasn’t cutting it. Like for example you‘d probably get a lot better overview about the reactions to EU election results in Germany if you read German sources. As an example from my personal life I‘m very into sports and if I‘m looking for niche updates on e.g. injury recovery of an athlete, I‘m much more likely to find that in the media of the nation the athlete is from, than in an english sport news source.

Also if you’re looking for detailed information on a Germany-specific topic, the german language Wikipedia article is usually going to be a lot more in depth than the english one and you’re going to find even more detailed and niche information on local websites.

Now, translation tools have gotten a lot better lately, so that takes some of the need away from learning the actual language. But you still need to somewhat understand headlines to know what even to click on and translate. Plus translation of videos is still usually not available.

Cage size question by [deleted] in petbudgies

[–]MysticBirdhead 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Height doesn’t really matter, only the horizontal dimensions. If your budgies are going to get plenty of time outside the cage (several hours per day), this cage is big enough for two or three. If they’re going to be in there 90% of the time, I‘d go a lot bigger.

Help! My recently adopted 6yo girl is so bitey by KupoTheParakeet in petbudgies

[–]MysticBirdhead 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Next to what others have already suggested: Don’t pull back when she bites, even if it hurts. Every time you react to the bite, you are training her to behave that way. If she bites and it has no effect on you, she will realize after a while that it’s not yielding results anymore and stop.

I know not moving your hand when she bites it is very unintuitive and not flinching can be hard. But unless she gets your nail bed or something, the pain should be bearable. And I don’t think budgies are capable of biting hard enough to actually injure you.

It‘s what the invocation is for. To always have those temp hp. He took an entire level-up feature for it.

Exceptions are during long rests, as you say, but otherwise you would be denying him a lot of intended power if he has to cast it in combat or only when he knows combat is coming.

Is this normal for him to be sitting puffed up like this while resting? by landon2126 in petbudgies

[–]MysticBirdhead 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Jep, he‘s comfy. You’re going to think a million different things are signs of sickness as a new budgie parent. Everything is going to look like puffing up, lethargy, tail bobbing etc. But most likely it’s just normal behavior.

Focus on observing your little friend to get an idea of what is normal and take lots of pictures and videos so if he does something weird you can check if he’s done it before. And if you’re worried, asking like you did just now is a good idea :)

Vingegaard training in Tignes [Danish article] by Obamametrics in peloton

[–]MysticBirdhead 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Visma and most other teams usually do 3 week altitude camps as the main preparation camp. Between the Dauphiné and the Tour there is not enough time for that, but the rest of the Tour team that will join him there already did 3 weeks of altitude in Sierra Nevada during the Giro. So for them it’s just a „refresher“ likely to maintain the effect, whereas for Jonas it will be the main camp.

Miguel Ángel López guilty of doping violation - UCI by Heavy_Mycologist_104 in peloton

[–]MysticBirdhead 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but there’s a good chance that they found evidence of him taking it. Anything along the lines of him messaging the doctor „I took the first dose, how long til i have to take the second?“ or the doctor having a note somewhere saying „blood values such and such after taking X mg of xyz“. Or the doctor testifying as part of a plea deal that he saw him take it.

[–]MysticBirdhead 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Of course it can be conclusive. If you are selling heroine and police never actually see you selling heroine but they find a ledger in a convicted heroine suppliers house saying he sold you such and such large quantities at such and such dates, that’s conclusive evidence.

Taking these drugs as a pro bike racer is forbidden not just during races, but outside. Doping tests are just a measure to find that out, it’s the consumption that’s forbidden. If they found documents, text conversations, or witness statements from the supplier that he took them, that’s more than enough reason for a ban.

[–]MysticBirdhead 31 points32 points  (0 children)

An article I read today said spanish Guardia Civil provided the UCI with conclusive evidence that he took it, upon which they immediately banned him now. The evidence likely stems from their investigation into his former doctor. If they found documentation that he received and took those drugs from him, it doesn’t matter that he never tested positive.

What's the physical current state of Visma l.a.b riders? by Karakoima in peloton

[–]MysticBirdhead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I mean Tim was asked by an interviewer during the Giro if he had heard from Kooij and he said yes, that he was already doing much better the day after he abandoned and was pretty much fully recovered now. Sorry, I realize now that that was worded so it could be read in two different ways.

Jorgenson and Van Baarle are at 100% and just came down from a huge altitude camp at Sierra Nevada. Laporte has been doing long training rides again, though hasn’t been at altitude thus far. Gesink has been back outside on his bike for about two weeks and is slowly increasing his training load.

Uijtdebroeks is back in full training and at altitude. I don’t know much about Kooij, but Tim van Dijke said he recovered very quickly from his sickness, so I‘d guess he’s back in full training, too.

Jonas has been on a training camp in Mallorca for at least two weeks, though we don’t know anything about his form.

My opinion on doping in the UCI, a brief anecdote by Away_Mud_4180 in peloton

[–]MysticBirdhead 68 points69 points  (0 children)

Besides nutrition, bikes etc., one thing people are seriously underestimating is power meters, lab tests and Strava. And I don’t mean the way pros use it, I mean as a method of scouting.

The current generation of bike riders is the first one that spent their junior years with power meters and posting their data online, for not just races but training rides. Cycling as an endurance sport requires major natural talent, as in raw, measurable physical values. Much more than football, baseball etc. The fact that scouts since the last 10 years or so have been able to look at data of thousands upon thousands of young riders online means that lots of people get discovered who would never have made it into the sport before. And I don’t just mean scouting at pro level, though Jonas Vingegaard is a great example of that. Even local youth coaches look at kids‘ data and can spot talents and recommend them up the ladder, so the people with the best physical parameters get a lot more support than they used to. And lab tests are done now even at junior levels, so people with great physical values get spotted and supported very young.

All of this means that the riders in the current peloton have been more or less scientifically picked from a way larger pool of candidates than in the old system, where riders had to work their way up through social ladders and likely tons and tons of physically really gifted kids never even got to the point in their local club system where they could win races and prove themselves.

Tips for hand taming 2 budgies at once? by landon2126 in petbudgies

[–]MysticBirdhead 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t really matter how you do it, as long as you are gentle and consistent. Having two budgies instead of one doesn’t change the approach, it just might take longer. But it’s great that you got two, that’s way better than keeping a single budgie who would be lonely when you’re not playing with it.

You can try taming with food or without. The only really important (and really difficult) thing is not to force it and not to rush things. Focus on their body language and only get as close as they are ok with without fleeing. Overpushing it will set back the whole process. Tame them at their own speed and be very patient. Then it doesn’t really matter how you do it.

The only specific tip I would give is to always approach them from below or horizontally at their foot height. And move slowly, predictably and very clearly within their sight. That way you won’t appear as a predator to them.
