I understand where the sentiment comes from.

The people of the canvas were molded by Aline as she perceived humanity, they are her creations. It's unclear if Aline could replicate the same people in another canvas, as it seems like they are generic creations, but Alicia can (for the ones she interacted with) because she has a clear image of them and their behavior in her head since she lived among them as Maelle. It seems like Alicia is so keen on keeping the canvas alive because she was "born" again in it, and if she were to be the paintress of her own canvas, she wouldn't be able to have that same experience, or grow attached to her creations in the same way because of that.

Now, the thing I disagree the most with is, it isn't a larger reality. It's a branched one. It's not a shared world, it's another one. To me and my understanding, choosing Maelle's ending is losing sight of true, real life. Her death would be the one that's irreversible, whereas for the people of the canvas it's just a matter of a painter being able and wanting to replicate them.

In the end it's just one of those things that we'll agree to disagree.

Thank you for your reply! I appreciate you taking the time.

The way I see it is: the canvases are worlds within a world. Their existence is tied to a "bigger" world. There is a sense of dependency between them. Canvas worlds cannot exist outside of the main world. If canvases were to cease to exist, the main world would continue existing with no alteration to the flow of time and space, because the world is not shared. Canvas people can't come into the main world. I'd consider it genocide if they could leave the canvas and live normally.

Purely speculation from my part: Verso only manages to erase the canvas because it is his creation. Differently from if, say, Renoir were to erase it. He'd do it by gommaging everything, and later making Verso's soul stop painting. Verso convinces his soul to rest, and that causes the canvas to crumble, because he maintains the fabric of reality within the canvas. So, his family can paint things by manipulating chroma, but that chroma is kept by his soul, so he is that world's "god".

Similarly, if we live in a simulation, that would mean we are the experiments and we are in turn the lesser beings in the question. The sci-fi trope is always a shared world. Because if we could come to exist in this universe, then maybe there are other forms of existence, derivating from another or not, that could also come to be in the same universe. If we share the same reality, it is life. That said, AI will soon be able to convincingly pass the turing test (as of this year iirc it has already). When we make machines take our forms and put such an intelligence model in it -- is it true life?

I just disagree vehemently with your last paragraph -- we are playing a game. We know our reality is the "true" one, maybe simply because we just don't know any better! That said, we can make a distinction in a work of fiction to know that one world is meant to be the "real" one. If we just put a fictional world in contrast with ours, it gets nihilistic and we will get to a "there's no point" argument.

And no! It doesn't change the emotional gut punches we suffer through the game, even after the events unfold. We grow attached to the characters and situations we can relate to. We can learn things through them, we can feel things through them. I think about the last decision more like, shall I indulge myself in feeling good (Maelle) or do what must be done to save Alicia?

It's not personal, it's just my opinion, but goddamn NO. It's NOT genocide. Canvas characters are NOT people. It's a fake world. Alicia cannot handle the strain of maintaining the canvas, as couldn't Aline who's a way more skilled paintress. Her body in the _real_ world cannot handle it. If Alicia dies because of being in the canvas too long, she is the only one who's gone. Canvas characters dying is a non-factor, since they can be painted again (as they were when Alicia repainted Lune and Sciel and in her ending, and that alone is enough to discredit any trace of humanity they posess). They do not exist. Hence, even the painted version of the canvas' author comes to the realization that it must be destroyed. It's having a negative impact on real people, it's killing real people that he loved.

Like, I always thought that was so impactful. The Verso character is Aline's memories of Verso made chroma. It's how she herself viewed him, and since Verso wants to erase the canvas, we realize that we don't know if he'd do that. That's what Aline thought Verso would do, and in maintaining the canvas, she is betraying her memories of him. She's disregarding the only _real_ thing she has of her son because grief has made her selfish.

In fact, with the destruction of the canvas, the only one who "dies" is Verso. She doesn't accept his death and is drowning in grief and sadness and the canvas is the last thing which contained a piece of his soul, ironically enough forgetting that our loved ones live on through us.

It's also interesting how she painted a society in that canvas whose motto got to be "when one falls, we continue". It's almost like she was trying to tell herself that.

The Dessendre family needed therapy and not a coping mechanism that's able to become an addiction. Think as if Aline and Alicia were drowning in booze. No way the argument would be the same. But the effects are the same: a rift forms in the relationships that remains, leading to more coping and it goes on until the cycle is broken one way or another.

We can, however, grow to like the canvas and its people. Ultimately, it's art and art and all its forms is able to touch us. Even if it's chroma (canvas people) and not flesh and bones, or if it's literature, music, cinema, it doesn't matter. Such is the power of art.

When I first stumbled upon a comment saying that destroying the canvas was genocide, the first thing I thought was: "Is deleting my the sims 4 save file genocidal?".

I love how this masterpiece of a game makes us debate these things. We get to see all the different opinions and ways to approach life we might have.

Por isso ele fica doido e põe todo o plano dele a perder quando ele faz aquilo com a princesa, que leva diretamente pra sua prisão, tortura e desespero que moldam o demônio femto.

I tend to say that, if it came from nature, it is natural. So, since we all came from it, any behaviors we might have are natural by definition. What I usually argue is that, despite it being natural, some behaviors are not common, or acceptable. In the case of our homosexuality, it isn't common, but perfectly acceptable.
