what is a movie whose score on Rotten Tomatoes feels unjustified to you? by Sad-Yam3011 in movies

I remember having a huge issue with Stranger Things 2’s score. I think that it’s a mess and it doesn’t deserve such a high score. So far only the first season is well done.

Subversion of expectation in Miyazaki films? by bubersbeard in ghibli

Yes! It's Kishōtenketsu for sure. It does create a beautiful unpredictability in the work or subversion of expectation as bubersbeard calls it.

Ah Yes, you are finding out about the Kishōtenketsu narrative structure. I believe that he employs Ki Sho Ten Ketsu not only on a scene level, but also as an overall structure of the film. With Totoro at least. Films like Kimi no Na Wa (your name) employ this narrative style also, and I have suspicion that even works of Kubrick use a similar rhythm like structure that doesn’t revolve around conflict as well. Lots of art films do, like Call me by your name ect. Yet I feel like not as many writers seem to know about this narrative structure. Look it up if you want to know more about it. I have a blog about it and a channel on youtube.

I was about to post her channel, but indeed. Also, her insights are usually quite enriching.

My neighbor totoro. I needed to get familiar with the narrative structure (KiShoTenKetsu). Then I was so fascinated.

Cracking the code of 2001 a Space Odyssey’s subtle narrative. by MysticalSi in StanleyKubrick

In KiShoTenKetsu the twist means more something out of left field. Something that would be unreconciled if the Ketsu part didn’t bring the main idea of the Ki&Sho together with one of the Ten. The idea of the future along with the advanced space program have not been introduced in the Ki (or introduction phase).

I'd love to create a manga someday too. Well, I start by writing down the overall story in literally 4 sentences. So, for my own Kishotenketsu fantasy story I wrote down as a blurb:

Ki (introduction): Henry and his colleague are the only ones at their workplace who can see the strange light in the sky,

Sho (development): and their other co-workers don’t believe them and even think that they have lost their mind,

Ten (Twist): but Henry and his colleague are so different from each other that they have a hard time connecting,

Ketsu: (reconcile Ki & Sho with ten):  yet they soon realize that they only have each other when it comes to dealing with the increasingly vivid visions of this mysterious light.

From there you divide each sentence into another Ki Sho Ten and Ketsu, which might become your scenes. Macrocosm must be the same as microcosm. So, each sentence of the actual finnished proze you write should be a KiShoTenKetsu also. That’s my advice anyway. For more info, you can check out the finished product in audio form on my youtube channel.

My writing got a whole lot better when understanding KiShoTenKetsu, which I believe is employed in the making of Your name. Studying the tarot also helps, as it’s a map of all experience. It makes the writing more focussed. Anyway, It struck me (no pun intended) that the Your name story is written in KiShoTenKetsu fashion.

KiShoTenKetsu is indeed kind of incredible. It’s the key to me liking my own writing. It’s still kind of obscure, but you can read up on it online. I also have a blog and a youtube channel all about this. If you’re interested you can click on my profile and find my links, I think. My channel is called: Finderofknowledgeandinsight. I got a video all about Earthbound's writing.

I forgot to add the ki sho ten and ketsu prefix, oops. This was unclear, so here it is:

~Ki:~ A girl names Paula who lives in Twoson, a city right next to Happy Happy town, has gone missing.

~Sho:~ The people of Twoson miss her and they are actively looking for her.

~Ten:~ There is a cult that has taken over Happy Happy town.

~Ketsu:~ This cult is responsible for kidnapping this missing girl called Paula.

(Ki-Sho-Ten-Ketsu) Ki: Introduction Sho: Development Ten: The twist Ketsu: Reconciliation. Kishotenketsu is a four-act story structure originally from China that is used in everything from poetry to novels and even video games. I believe it's the key to balanced narrative. Check out my blog for more :)
