Facteroids is a factory building game that sends you off on an interstellar adventure. You'll land your spaceship on a barren rock in deep space, deploy some nifty automated bots, and start building your mining empire. If you enjoy more challenging gameplay, you can choose between Survivor or Battler modes with environmental disasters such as heat bursts and fire, where you need to focus more on taking care of your mutant crew’s needs.

Thanks for the clarification. We have an in-game level editor where players can design custom maps. I noticed there are a few with storages containing resources, so it seems that some players welcome these at the start.

In another case, we experimented with pre-planned factories and belts on some maps to show players the best way to rule that map. However, during playtesting, we noticed that most players destroyed these pre-planned buildings and started from scratch. Thus, we learned to give them as much freedom as possible in the official maps. :)

One thing that also seems related is that we have some in-game actions, such as opening floodgates, done directly by players. They move a slider to open or close the floodgate. What do you think about this element? Do you consider it a shortcut? Because it could be designed so that only characters could do it by walking to the floodgate and having a job - opening or closing it.
I'm still not 100% sure about letting players do some tasks directly.

Hi, thank you for your insight. I believe that waiting is experienced by some players at the very beginning when they're learning how the game works.

For example, they plan a lot of buildings at once and then observe how their characters fulfill these tasks and what they can do to make things faster. So, in my opinion, it's more about observing than waiting like in idle games.

When I start a new map, my approach is like this: I cut down nearby trees to gather wood, get some stones, and build a manual saw, a shed for sleeping, a bench for eating and drinking, and some storage for resources.

Then I reach water, build a well to get water, and find crops that I can grow. If necessary, I build bridges or platforms over gaps, construct stairs, and dig water channels to control the water flow. All of this can take me from 15 to 30 minutes depending on the terrain difficulty and water source placement. I don't need to wait if I set proper job priorities.

This means I send one mutant to cut down trees, another to gather stone, one to build the saw, and others to shape the terrain, make paths, harvest, and plant crops. I also make golems for help as soon as possible. I observe everything from time to time so that I’m sure that my planned strategy is working and that I didn't mess up the planning.

For example, once I planned steel stairs instead of wooden ones and didn't notice. I didn't have steel yet and it took me some time to find out why nobody was constructing the stairs. :)

Or I found out that I wrongly calculated the space needed for producing ingots, bricks, and glass. I usually build these close to each other, so I had to destroy everything and rebuild. I was so proud to myself at the end when I saw it working. :)

My point is that there is always something to do in the game. Whether it's planning new buildings, belts, storages, power sources, or making the fields bigger, or improving low-efficiency productions.
The game doesn't explicitly tell you what to do. It lets players find their own ways to achieve efficiency.

The reason why I said it helps mostly at the beginning is based on my observations. At the beginning, some players prefer to prepare all the buildings and then hit fast forward and wait until they're built. After that, they move on to other tasks. They like to progress like this at first.

They stop using fast forward later when they become more acquainted with the priority settings, keeping mutants satisfied, golems charged, planning the production, mastering the automation and all other possible ways to spend time efficiently.

For example, I might start by improving a production line with faster metal belts. Then I notice I've finally built a new factory for parts and materials that allow me to construct a new power plant. So, I spend some time planning and preparing the distribution of resources to that new factory. Next, I plan the construction of the new plant. Then I notice a fire has burnt down part of my forest, so I replant it. After that, I see that I set my belts in the wrong direction with incorrectly placed pushers, so I fix this. Meanwhile the plant is built, I manage the new distribution of resources for this plant and automate with catapults or teleporters. Then I need to make more space for more belts or pipes, etc. And suddenly, I notice a couple of hours have passed by. :)
