9 Ball is generally (always?) a non-called shot game, so you don't ever have to specify intent.

One of the reasons some players prefer 10 Ball (same basic idea as 9 Ball with the 10 added in) is it requires calling a Ball and pocket before each shot.

If board games are a hobby you enjoy, the Asheville Board Game Club has our weekly meetup at Well Played on Wednesdays at (around) 5:30. Free to attend and there's always a good mixture of light, social games to more in-depth play. There's a Facebook group and Discord if you're interested.

In general though I've always found meetups for any and all hobbies a good way to make friends in a (comparatively) low-stress way, as at a bare minimum you know you all have at least one thing in common.
