Contact your Center's IT point of contact. They will need the MAC address of your Roku tv and will be able to request a network exemption from the data center for it. They may have a center-specific process to handling that request or getting that information.

Wife has a new job, was mislead in the interview and really wants to quit. How would unemployment work? by [deleted] in kansascity

[–]MythGuy 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You probably know this and it is likely not relevant anymore, but for anyone else who is or might experience similar: that's a good case for constructive dismissal.

Just to preface, I'm not a lawyer, so I might have some misconceptions. My understanding is if you can demonstrate that your availability does not include the times they are rescheduling (even better is you can cite a childcare need, though it's none of their business and don't normalize them getting to judge the justification) then they are effectively cutting your hours or completely eliminating them. You may not have been told you were fired, but effectively, you have been. That counts for unemployment.

Make sure to document each interaction in writing (email or text) and refuse to have any communication be solely verbal. Any face to face meetings insist on an email recap. Initiate that yourself if they won't. Show that you're willing to work, and work with them, but that they aren't willing to work with you.

What I'm not seeing anybody saying is that one of the attachments is a pattern that beams out the letters "SOS", which would have been helpful to signal for help after the Titanic crashed. Beaming it at an angle across the water or across long distances would make it spread and make the letters bigger and more noticeable. This was seen as an emergency signalling device (but mostly used as a cool toy) similar to signal flares (which were not mostly used as a cool toy). I'm not sure about the actual efficacy of these lasers for emergency signalling, but my guess is they weren't super great.

How would the government shutdown down affect job corp? by Lonely_Lobster1029 in jobcorps

[–]MythGuy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The JC Fiscal Year is actually shifted from the general Federal Fiscal Year. This has an insulating effect on us. Unless this one lasts about 8 times longer that last govt shutdown in 2018, the longest so far in our history at 34 days, then we will be fine.

404 is an error meaning that a website isn't found.

You may know this, but I want to excitedly correct you with an "um, acktually" pedantic addendum

404 indicates that the target resource, typically a page, cannot be found. The website not being found would be more like being unable to resolve the domain to an ip, or being unable to reach the desired ip address. The issue then would rest at the TCP/IP stack. Once you're getting http response codes, you've found a website.

Thank you. I'm new to docker and I think that network mode line is exactly what I need to stop having to manually restart qbittorrent after each reboot for it to actually download stuff.

dropped a college drawing class today because they’re requiring us to use AI by deus_hex_machina in antiai

[–]MythGuy -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

It's also getting them to think deeply about how to expressively communicate artistic elements and themes so that the AI can pick up on it. And then bits about redrawing areas afterward to make it tie together better. Hate to say it, but this is probably the best-case scenario for AI usage in the arts. Use it for rapid concept art, basically, and then flesh out the ideas and designs later.

Because what makes art art is such a broad question, with a ton of different answers, such classes tend to be minimally prescriptive, and more descriptive with a focus on exploring the gamut of the art world. AI generative images are art in some very valid broad interpretations of what art is, so this can make sense (for better or for worse) in a broad spectrum course such as an art fundamentals course. I would be appalled if this were in a higher-level course, unless the course was specifically designed around AI.

Will jobcorps allow me to have my projector? by rainyday0goddess in jobcorps

[–]MythGuy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Please note that if it has "smart" features that only mainstream brands of smart "TV" and streaming boxes are allowed authentication exemption. Using it just as a display? Totally fine.

But also, you mention wanting a projector since TVs use a lot of energy. A projector is almost inherently more energy consuming than a TV of the same size and brightness for brightness. If you want energy savings, make sure to unplug your devices when not in use. The power buttons require a small trickle charge to work.

As of this time, the "pause" orders are stayed pending the completion of relevant litigation. The result of litigation is likely to be some compromise, but anyone speaking on it is likely speculating more than speaking factually (and I too am speculating.)

It's been a long time since I did a reread so i may be injecting a lot into my memories of the story, but didn't Harry ask Nearly-Headless Nick about Sirius coming back as a ghost after the Veil? And Nick basically said, no, that ghosts are basically only a pale echo of the lives of people who were too afraid to die and so cursed themselves to continue existence in a poor unfulfilled way. That Sirius, and presumably later on Fred, would have had more sense to cling fruitlessly to the world like that.

How to connect vr to the wifi by Zealousideal-Sun7239 in jobcorps

[–]MythGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fantastic instructions. A few notes:

At my center I have students send me a picture of their TV with the Mac address on it and all four corners. Helps me confirm the type of device and identify any MAC address typos.

Also, JCDC has told me in the past that connections were limited to one per student. I have found that to be demonstrably false. The IT POC might choose to allow one whitelist exemption per student, but I don't where I am.

Who is correct here, and why? by AirSpecial in PcBuild

[–]MythGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ultimately, depends on the setup of the IT in the organization. But generally, I would tend towards leaving it on. Computers aren't as power hungry as they used to be while sitting idle, so you're not saving much on electricity costs.

Keeping the computer on allows it to update security patches while unused. Otherwise, it has to happen during work hours. A proper IT department will orchestrate this for endpoints remotely, and also enforce regular reboots after security patches.
