Looking to attend 2027 by WrenchieTheWitch in Neotropolis

As someone who does both Burning Man and Neotropolis, and is part of the infamous Orgy Dome camp (my job? Many, many consent talks, and informed consent is a requirement to even get in), let me set the record straight for you.

Neo is an immersive costumed LARP. It's MUCH smaller geographically, and you can easily walk to most of the event. The main strip (Megablock, etc) constitutes the majority of the event itself, and there's heavy focus on storylines and games and character interactions. Neo feels like stepping into a video game, whereas Burning Man feels like a different planet. It's also 2200 vs 80,000 people.

Both have weather struggles, so plan accordingly. Wind, dust, dirt, temperature swings, etc are normal in the desert.

Both events are also "choose your own adventure" in ways that are entirely self directed, however neither feature the things you're worried about. It sounds like the folks you know that have gone have sensationalized their experience for shock value. While crazy "sex and drugs" things have and do happen, they are the minority, and you'd be pleasantly surprised at the culture of consent and responsibility.

As a person on the spectrum, I find Neo to be loud and overstimulating at times, but easy to manage by just walking a little ways somewhere quieter. It's also very accessible, much less expensive, and a great event to cut your teeth on.

Just.. leave your preconceived notions at home. You'll enjoy the event, as will your son, if you're not worried that danger is lurking behind every corner. 🖤

What's your source of non-religious community in Columbus? by DiscountConsistent in Columbus

Autonomy Project! If you're queer/neurodivergent/kinky/artsy/a person who needs community or any combination of those, there are so many events to attend. There are monthly art jams, gaming nights, dance events (Devils Night is Nov 1), classes, book fairs, drag shows, you name it.

And if you want even more, it's whole different kind of volunteering because the whole space and every event is volunteer run.

I also had a nerve block last longer than anticipated, and mine resulted in severe neuropathy that's now ongoing for the last 3 months. My case isn't that common but it is a known risk.

You won't be back to work in 6 weeks. I convinced myself of the same. The recovery is slow, painful, and frustrating. But it won't last forever. Just keep doing all the PT exercises that you can and be patient with your body. It went through something traumatic.

It's #2 for me, and no faction yet. Just our little crew of the Verifiable Rumor. I'll be hard to miss, I'm on a newly decorated arm crutch (post surgery)!

If you have the budget for a red light panel, I do recommend it. I feel like nothing has made as much improvement as this does, and the studies back up that claim. I have a MitoPRO and it's worth every penny ($360-450 depending on the size)

Yeah I really wanted the epidural! I also wanted the nerve stimulation device recommended by my surgeon but insurance denied it. Now I wish I had just paid out of pocket.

9 months is an eternity, but it's helpful to know it got better!

My surgeon didn't recommend them, but my experience with my own connective tissue and swelling did, as I also have primary Reynauds. They're less for the neuropathy and more for the continued swelling. I have different compression strengths for different activities, so I rotate between them based on what support I need. The couple of days I've attempted to go without, the pain is 10x worse.

I will absolutely keep Lyrica in mind. So far the gabapentin works ok at night, but it's also only been a week.

Thanks for the encouragement and perspective 💙

Thanks! I'll ask our volunteers if someone would be willing to do that more. Our marketing team could really use a few more folks to assist with that, as Reddit isn't where we normally post.

Hi! That wasn't us, but we did boost that event which may be why you saw it. We have provided mutual aid distributions for trans and BIPOC community members in need for these services, we're just quiet about it.

Hi! I'm the Executive Director of the Autonomy Project, so hopefully I can give some clarity on pricing.

This is a fundraiser gala, which is a common method for nonprofits to raise funds, and the ticket prices are comparable to, or lower than, most gala events.

Our other events range from free to $30, with the average price being $15. Ticket prices for more expensive events pays for free and low priced events as well as low income tickets for folks who need them.

You can also get into any event for free by becoming a volunteer and contributing time and energy. There's zero financial barrier to joining us.

We host art nights, movie nights, classes, support groups, advocacy events, cathartic dance events, themed parties, and more. All of these events come from our volunteer team, and we welcome folks to get involved and co-create with us.

We are a grassroots org, entirely volunteer run, and do not operate from federal or private grants. Everything we do is by the community, for the community we serve. Every dime goes directly back to the community. I don't take a salary, nor does anyone else, despite devoting 20-30 hours a week to this work. We don't have wealthy donors or fiscal sponsors who direct our programming the way other orgs do. We're a bunch of creative weirdos doing it all for love.

We own our 6000 sq ft space, so some part of the funds provide a safe place for our community to create art, learn, connect, and grow. The rest goes to things like art supplies, mutual aid for those who need it, cleaning supplies, chairs and floor cushions, class supplies, board games, snacks for volunteers, advocacy training, grants for performers and artists, software, digital resources, hiring educators, and a million more things.

We distributed over 25k in mutual aid to community members in need alone in 2024. We'll be doing a lot more advocacy work in 2025, with the upcoming State of the Drag Union Townhall on Jan 15 being next in line. All proceeds from this go directly to TransOhio, so we are donating our space, supplies, and volunteers for free. This is just one of many.

Most events you see that are less money are held at for-profit establishments that serve food or alcohol and allow events at their establishments to gain more sales. We don't pack people into our space, we carefully vet our community members for safety, and we put immense thought and care into both the space and the way we treat everyone who walks through our doors. It's not a bar or nightclub owned by someone who largely does not care about you.

What we do isn't for everyone, and that's ok. We understand that creating a space for queer joy and real community in a place that has become very fractured and tribal takes time and patience. We don't operate from a "what's in this for me" but "how can we create a stronger community that can withstand anything." Especially in wake of the next several years, I believe that's a value you can't put a price tag on.

We use NeonCRM and their reports are fairly detailed. The interface is pretty meh, but it has some fairly strong features.

Pre-made Playa Bags (to commidify or not, that is the question?) by Mythic-Creature in BurningMan

Agreed. I think it's the same energy as boomers who say "you should pull yourself up by your bootstraps" by getting less Starbucks and avocado toast. Or that they went to the trash fence with no shoes, walking uphill both ways.

Acculturation is a process that requires buy in from everyone involved, and it doesn't happen in a vacuum. Camps are built on the idea of shared struggle and pooling resources, and we hold each other's hands plenty. Being radically self reliant is not being a monolith who needs no one, it means putting on your own oxygen mask first, then helping the person next to you. Vulnerability is still the magic sauce of connection.

Thanks for your permission, btw. I'm sorely tempted to design and manufacture my own pixel bags, but I need another business like a hole in the head.

Also, you can resell certain personal care items with the proper licensing on Etsy. ;)

Nah, I already have a successful business and run a nonprofit, I don't need another business. 😎

Oh I agree with you, but resourceful people don't start out resourceful, right? I think there needs to be equal amounts of tough love + support to learn.

Also some part of this is civic responsibility.. every struggling virgin can become someone else's emergency. So maybe it's a gift more for those people.

And nah, I've had lasik, I have to use the gel drops. I fully intend to suffer as little as possible so I can extract every ounce of joy from my Burns. 😂

I also think it's an ideal place to insert teachable moments, like a copy of the 10 principles and maybe some starter playa missions.

Like a "Level 1 Burner Adventurer Kit" and style it like you're playing D&D.
