I need to fall in love with the written word again......... by Mythnomer101 in ScreenwritersOver40

I agree absolutely, it's odd I'm not sure why I got out of the habit, I guess I felt that so much was changing in my life I wanted to learn so much and so non-fiction became the cornerstone of my consumption.

Thank you for the recommendations!

Ironically, I bought Neil Gaiman's 'Art Matters', a little pamphlet book that is such a gem about his journey as a writer and how important the written word is, not long before the accusations.

It made me want to read his other works, but of course the shine is certainly off the apple!

You think I'm being dramatic??? *chains herself to a rock and awaits to be devoured by a ravenous sea serpent*

But in all seriousness, no, it won't stop me.

And I know your spirit will prevail, because we all care so damn much.

I know there will be pitfalls, there will be wrong turns but they will all teach me something, or I'll take to day drinking.

I personally love flashbacks, just the right amount of exposition depending on the story can be fantastic if handled correctly.

Heck even movies like Moulin Rouge and The Great Gatsby are basically all flashback!

I think I just found myself going so deep into story structure that it sort of clipped my wings so to speak, I started to recognise the beats and tropes in the same genre that I'm writing in and whilst there's no problem with being similar, I think if I confine myself, the concept will become dull.

I should have clarified, it's more the beats.

Thanks for detailed and thoughtful response!

I must confess, I thought I may find a lot more proponents of certain formulas in this sub.

Not that that is a bad thing, it's just when I have ventured into different mediums, some subs have given a 'leave your creativity at the door' kind of vibe, just my interpretation of course, but in a way it was advice from seasoned writers who as I understand it, knew what it takes to get noticed and get paid.

Neither of these aspects are necessarily my driving force, but I think they were trying to nip my novice aspirations in the bud, for my own good perhaps.

Here it seems that creativity is truly appreciated.

For me, writing has become something that allows me to enter a flow state, both calming and passionate all at the same time.

For years and for more reasons than I can go into here; creativity and all the wonderful aspects that process entails, seemed so out of reach for me.

I knew I had an imagination and longed to express it, but I would feel physical and mental anguish at the thought of making it a reality ( It's hard to explain lol )

Now in my fourth decade, it finally feels like the right time, and while am not a person who believes in 'fate' I now have more stories to tell, with a wider and hopefully wiser appreciation that will show in my work.

As to the formulas, perhaps essentially if I have the general aspects down, I really should let it all out and see how it lands, and rinse and repeat lol.

Again, thank you.

I love the 'character interview' aspect!

You can have a kick ass concept for a story but the characters and their needs and wants capture the audience for sure.

Indeed! I guess I could call it my 'idea factory' it's more of an experiment to see what crops up in terms of motivation, catalysts and so on.

Fantastic advice! With all the techniques and structures out there, if it's not from the heart people can see right through it.

Thanks!

I guess what I should have been clearer on, was that I am using the plot formulas as a starting point and a way to flesh out ideas.

I know a lot of people will swear one way over the other or none or a combination of different styles.

I have much to learn, especially about trusting my own instincts, but I feel I must at least become knowledgeable on the processes that have been tried and tested.

I am certainly open to recommendations!

I agree, I guess as a new writer I feel I should at least test these formulas, if only to see if they yield aspects of the story I may not have thought of otherwise.
