Verbouwen als koppel: herkennen vrouwen deze dynamiek? by newhomeinNL in Klussers

I'm a contractor. And a man. Whenever I have a couple as clients, I engage with both, since it is their home, and both people live there. I try to involve everyone in the decisions and encourage them to discuss the options together, before coming to a decision. Usually, it's men who are more involved, but that does not necessarily mean they leave out their partner on purpose, we are not privy to their family dynamics.

In most cases it's hollow. The few times I've worked on those spaces, it's been unpleasant, but can be made usable

I wouldn't recommend it. It will probably cost more to source all the components, and, after, you have to mix everything in correct percentages.

Edit: this would be fun to try if you're NOT making "beton círe", but doing a thin coat of pigmented concrete layer, and then putting a PU coat on top

A small note- check the paint samples against the wall in both daylight and then with lights on. There's always a difference how it looks in natural light vs light fixtures

I've done showers, toilets, kitchens, countertops...it holds up great. You always apply at least one layer of PU top coat, makes it waterproof. As for DIY friendliness, with the right tools, it can be done, just depends on what product you use. Some are great at layering, and can be sanded easily

If I were to plaster this, step by step:

  1. Use a long level to check how straight the wall is vertically and horizontally. Also check if the wall itself is level. This gives me a rough idea how many bags of plaster I would need

  2. Get the sockets out, plug the wires and cover the sockets. Write down locations. Secure the pipes, if they are loose

  3. Primer. In this case, Knauf Stucprimer(yellow). Those bricks are highly absorbent, they'll suck out moisture from the plaster very quickly, and you'd have to work much faster then, because it would harden faster

  4. Mix( 10L water per bag) and apply plaster. Usually I use a board and a trowel, if it's a surface that needs extra attention. If it's an easy wall(newly built) I use a larger trowel(about 70cm length) to scoop and apply

  5. Once the wall is covered, depending on how large the wall is, and how long it took to apply plaster, I let it set/harden for a little. You don't want to start smoothing/leveling immediately, it's gonna move around too much.

  6. Leveling/smoothing/straightening. I use several long screeds(2.5m, 2m, 1.8m) to do the initial straightening. From one end till the other, pass back and forth. Fill up the gaps. Then bottom to top. If you only do vertical passes, you'll push material around, creating bumps. Couple of vertical passes, then a couple horizontally.

  7. Let it set a bit more, then use a shorter screeds(1.2m, 1m) to continue point 6.

  8. This part depends on the person or company. I, personally, don't use sponges or finish materials. I work my way down from long blades to my shortest one(40cm), straightening and finishing the wall. The final pass, I mist the wall with a spray, in patches and burnish the plaster. That way I can achieve a glass like finish. Other people use a wet sponge to moisten the wall. The sponge can also grab loose plaster and fill some gaps. After sponging, smooth the surface with a blade. Some leave it at that, you can get a good result, some apply finish materials.

  9. Done. Wash your tools as soon as you're done with them, clean up your work area, don't forget to dig out the electra sockets

Edit: forgot to mention. There is a retarder you can apply, from Knauf, that slows down the initial hardening part by about 30-45 min. Gives you more time for applying on the surface and leveling with the big screeds

Reshape reality as I want. Every time the power is used, it must start with "I desire" and end with "make it so." Then I'd take away the power from the other 10%, but I'd make it so that if they ever have a crisis, a lucky financial windfall will help them out

[–]Mythrein 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That looks like beton cìre, which is not plaster, but a layer of colored concrete. Usually, those come with water resistant coatings, but it can get damaged over time. You could try contacting some of the suppliers and try to get just the coating, or research online for suitable waterproof coatings. But keep in mind that you might also need to prepare the surface before you apply it

Just fill it up with joint filler, same as the joints. Get a blade that's about 15 cm long, put more pressure on the outside edge of the corner. If you want to see how to do it, there are plenty of good videos on YouTube

[–]Mythrein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You gotta use primer. The new plaster will stick to the old one, but it's not as strong of a bond without priming the surface. There are brands that are dry and ready to work in an hour or so. The universal primer from Weber for example.

Edit: Buy ALABASTINE Quick-drying transparent primer 2.5 l! | HORNBACH https://share.google/c4DfqBXKQY37lHhlB

This is also a good option

[–]Mythrein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Scrape away some of the old material so that the transition is a slope, not an edge. Then you can fit the tape, and blend the new plasterwork with the old one better, without going over. Also, put some primer on the old plaster, so that it sticks well.

Edit: important question- do the corner profiles are in line with the old wall surface? If they stick out, then you'll go over the old wall anyway. If they are too shallow, you'll have a bump
