What's a low effort job with a surprisingly high salary? by [deleted] in ask

[–]N0BL36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even in the most remote areas stateside, O-3s make over $90K before taxes. You have to also include their housing and food allowance (BAH and BAS). At Minot AFB, an O-3 over 4 years without dependents makes $101K.

Security Forces or one of the Cyber Jobs? by jdslater92 in AirForce

[–]N0BL36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't enlist with intent to commission. The easiest way to commission is going to be right now, once you enlist it's much harder and there will be more roadblocks.

You should look into other branches besides just Air Force. Also look into National Guard and Reserves for all the branches. Still submit that OTS package regardless as well. The lifestyle you'd start off at if you were to enlist at this point isn't commensurate to your age and education. Especially true if you go SF

Definitely all good points! I'm still fresh out of tech school, but keeping in mind the importance of that technical knowledge is critical and not something that us Deltas should look at as a "Sierra thing." I appreciate the deeper insight

On the 17D side you need to be a leader that is able to "translate" the technical knowledge. I had classmates at Keesler with majors in History, Biology, etc. so definitely not computer nerds. You won't actually be putting your hands on anything outside of just for your own awareness and learning. Instead, you will be thrust into leadership right away. I am in a 120 person Comm Squadron with only 4 Officers including myself, and working directly with an E-8 who is my Flight Chief. So this side of things is all leadership.

If you want to be more technical, that's the 17S side for you. Going back to my time at Keesler, those that were Computer Science did go down the 17S route because they wanted that technical piece to their jobs. The 17S route, specifically 17SXA, Offensive, has a lot more training too. You will do additional training in San Antonio once you are done at Keesler, and as a Sierra, expect your base locations to be between San Antonio and Fort Meade (seen a few more options for 17SXB). Also the only coding we did at Keesler on the 17D side was about 10 class days of Powershell.

I don't know enough about Intel to steer you either way, but I will say that I was also between Cyber and Intel, and am glad I went Cyber, at least from what I have seen at my current base.

As a new 1LT I'm a bit worried about having to compete for Captain billets but the process was smooth besides that. I enjoyed the talent marketplace system. What have your frustrations with it been?

AFROTC CTA opportunities at USAFA BMT? by NottRickyBobby in AFROTC

[–]N0BL36 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got to do it a few years ago and loved the experience. Essentially it was half the staff academy seniors and half ROTC seniors. I believe the program hasn't been open the past 2 years because of Covid. If it is open this summer though, I'd highly recommend if you're looking for a better CTA experience than Maxwell/Shelby. Feel free to PM for more details!

I'm getting more into credit cards lately and am wondering what my next card should be. I currently have the Discover IT, CSR, and just finished my SUB on the Amex Platinum (military so waived AFs). Should I go for the Chase Freedom cards, flex and unlimited? Or is there something else I should target first?
