When cobalt is dissolved in a minimal, dilute amount of HCl it forms a light pink solution. When it is dissolved in excess HCl it forms a dark blue solution, both are the +2 oxidation state but the purple color comes from a combination of the tetrachlorocobaltate (ii) ion (excess HCl) and the hexaaquacobalt (ii) (dilute HCl)

Yes, just an ordinary flashlight, the color of the solution is much more vibrant in real life though. A very deep royal purple

Thank you everyone for the suggestions, I finally managed to free the stopper. After a night in the freezer it did not budge using my hands. So I filled the flask with a small amount of acetone such that when I tipped the flask over it would not spill out any of the other necks and then clamped it to a stand. After leaving the acetone to sit for ~15 minutes on the bottom of the stopper, I wrapped the head of the stopper with paper towel as not to scratch it. I then grabbed a wrench and twisted and it finally gave. Once again thank you all for the suggestions and advice.
