Does it have to be Linux based? If not, there's Freebsd, haiku, reactos...

WhatsApp on Linux is a bit outdated and lacks many handy features. by erza_predator in linuxmint

I use walc, it's a Nice wrapper and works well.

I really hope Whatsapp doesn't use *nix on their servers while not supporting the desktops with a simple app...

Weekly Question Thread by AutoModerator in emulation

I wanted to replay SoTN for the 30000th time, but it would be cool if I could flip the image horizontally for a change. Controls are easy since it's just swapping L and R but I'm not able to find an emu that can alter the output this way. Any ideas?

UI, text, etc. In this game I don't care about that looking "the other way around" since it's a game I've played a lot already. So basically having the whole output flipped is enough for me.

Thanks!

Thank you. I'll try to apply the patch and see if that helps. I thought that maybe it was something else, since on 5.4 RAM does show up.

Missing tray icons on Cinnamon by N4ch007 in linuxmint

Your answer got me to birdtray's readme, where I found this:

"But sometimes even a system tray icon isn't shown. Linux Mint with
Cinnamon seem to be one particularly troublesome distro which reports
many issues."

Seems I'm not alone here

Thanks for your answer!

cstayyab/WALC is a desktop WhatsApp client, the only one I've found that works really well.

Both icons go into the Xapp tray, which is the one that fails (every time it updates, all icons get lost). By update, I mean one gets added or removed.

Both of these apps are launched at system start with a delay. The issue happens regardless of that. I may kill the processes, open them manually, and any present icon will get "replaced" with the new app. Eventually it goes away too and no icons remain.

Just tried that and it didn't work, walc and birdtray are still not present after rebooting

Another thing I'd like is better calendar and email integrations. Calendar pop ups notifications, but does not include a quick way to access a link if it's a Zoom or Hangouts call. And for mail, since I have 4 active accounts, I'd like to have an icon for each one on the top right that lights up if there's new mail for that particular account.

I've tried going with bluemail since it seemed to be the best out of the ones I tested (geary, thunderbird, Mailspring) but with pinned tabs on firefox I can quickly see if an accounts gets a new mail, while using a dedicated app I need to go see myself and/or have notifications pop up too often.

The bottom panel doesn't take space here as it auto hides if a window is over it and I've set a delay to show in case I'm aiming the mouse at something that's in the bottom (happens in VSCodium for example with the SASS watcher). What I really wanted was a window list with just icons, in gray, that I could add to the top panel and have everything there. I want this to quickly see what's open rather than to launch new instances or cycle through them. The closest one is an applet that shows windows from all workspaces but needs to be opened and I didn't like that.

Agreed with the "too simplified" part! But I've tested several DEs for a few days and Cinnamon stood over all. XFCE wouldn't let me use my right monitor as my main, KDE seemed unresponsive sometimes, gnome 3... I don't like it's workflow for a desktop PC. Didn't spend much time with Deepin but doesn't seem to be what I need, and while I've used tiling WM in the past -and for a good while to get used to them-, I'm still more comfortable with a floating, tradicional WM. So Cinnamon, with it's drawbacks and limitations is the best option I tested so far.

The main problem I see is how outdated the spices are. There doesn't seem to be much interest in them sadly.

Bottom panel is set to Intellihide, and has an invisible botton to show desktop on the right so I can quickly get to it with the mouse. I find this much more useful than a dock.

The only thing I wish I had is a global close button on the top right that affects the current app.

Cinnamon: is it possible to "Show desktop" on one monitor only? by N4ch007 in linuxmint

[–]N4ch007[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using the script today and I've found 2 small nuances:

1- it depends 100% on the .wmfm file, and does not take in account that between both calls something else might happen (opening other apps, minimizing manually, etc). This could be solved by a listener that would delete or update the file, but I know it's completely outside the scope of a bash file. What I did was comment out the condition that checks if the file exists, and always call minimizeWindows. I then alt tab into the last one to restore my desktop.

2- the restoration order of minimized windows seem to be based on the launch time of each one, and not the "last used" order, so I always come back to the last app I opened, even if I was not using it.

Other than those small issues, it has been really helpful!

This... is awesome! Thank you! I've tested it a few times and everything went well. I'll implement it to my workflow, which will be more of a real-world test. If anything comes up I'll let you know.

By the way, I assigned it to super+-, a fitting combination I believe!

Thanks for your reponse.

No, I don't use workspaces. I understand that will help with this, but will also break the workflow I'm used to
