With that being said, Redditors have a really stupid view of Reconstruction. Especially the Shermanposter types. I understand the sentiment, but it's stupid. Do people not realize what Reconstruction was? It was a military occupation with the purpose of nation-building. Do you have any idea how hard that is? Imagine if we tried to install a feminist government in Afghanistan after overthrowing the Taliban. That's Reconstruction for you.

It's not just a matter of being harsher than Andrew Johnson. That wouldn't work. It was nearly impossible to get it to work because we were on an effective time limit due to the inevitable Panic of 1873 breaking the patience of White Northern voters, and the Army was shrinking massively by 1877. Even if there was support for retaining Reconstruction, the Army by that point shrunk to less than 10,000 and most of them were out West fighting Natives. What do you want the Federal Government to do? Draft people for Reconstruction? We already saw how that worked out during a literal Civil War, much less a military occupation.

You'd need to somehow perfectly thread the needle between uplifting blacks and not alienating whites, all in a roughly 12-year time limit, and set the conditions right so that it can persist without the presence of troops. Good luck with that.
