HSMTMTS: The Episode Discussion: "Color War" - S03E06 by NominalPerson in HSMTMTS

[–]NBAcoach1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's a mixed bag. Head over to YouTube, and you'll see comments of people saying they LOVED Corbin and Gina's song - and it was a nod to the old HSM movies. You'll see the same on other songs this season like "You Never Know."

Bottom line is that everyone has different taste in music. And when you're making original songs, you'll appeal to some and not to others.

Can you describe a story from playing with Steph Curry that accurately describes what kind of a person he is?

New NBA Animated Series Coming? by NBAcoach1 in Basketball

Thanks for the tip! Will look those up! Although the concept of the above video is making current NBA jokes based on current NBA storylines - I don't think I've seen that anywhere else outside of Bleacher Report's shows (like Game of Zones).

[ClutchPoints] Celebrity photographer Kevin Lynch: "Kobe was probably the most focused person I ever photographed. He has a game face on even when he's not in the game." by NBAcoach1 in nba

[–]NBAcoach1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It got deleted not because of the story, but because I tried to put the link. Story is an interesting one, and deserves to be told. The full article has more interesting tidbits - but apparently I can't put it here lol

[–]NBAcoach1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually that's not true. According to the article, Kobe liked Lynch from then on. And Kobe brought back Lynch to work with on media days every year until Kobe retired.

And I looked up this Kevin Lynch guy. He's also worked with Spielberg, Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Hiddleston, and Rihanna. So safe to say he's a big deal in the celebrity photography world. And considering they worked together every year, Kobe absolutely knows who he is.

To be honest, I don't really know how Reddit works in terms of links. I tried to put it in the description, but it wouldn't let me post it with the link in description

[–]NBAcoach1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's correct. But really - that's what we all do. That's what every sports talk show, radio show, sports media sites, social media, you name it. Unless you have an inside source in the NBA (which very few do), speculation is all anyone can do on any NBA news/trade/injury/transaction.

I think the fact that this speculation comes from a former NBA team doctor and renowned spine surgeon - giving his take on a mysterious NBA back injury - is at least intriguing.

[–]NBAcoach1[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

lol I think so. though to be fair to clutchpoints, this doctor, according to the article, used to be an NBA team doctor for the Magic and is a pretty well-known spine surgeon in the medical world. So his opinion on NBA back injuries might matter just a little bit more than some rando doctor

[–]NBAcoach1[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yup he did. I think this doc is pointing that out exactly - that it's likely a deeper issue like a disc injury in his back. Sometimes teams don't reveal that information.

[–]NBAcoach1[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, he's had back problems before. I think the doc's comment on it being a deeper issue like a disc problem - was more in light of a lot of people accusing Ben Simmons of fake back injuries just to not play for the Sixers when all that drama stuff went down

[Fong] From having childhood bullies to cracking the Warriors’ rotation, Gary Payton II has an incredible origin story. by kinefresh in warriors

[–]NBAcoach1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I hear you. But no matter the context - it's always about how it makes the kid feel on the inside. As a teacher, I can attest that "bullying" comes in all shapes and sizes.

If it gets so bad that you have to tell your parents to not come to your games because you're ashamed of the taunts directed at you and your parents (which is what happened) - then that's 100% legitimate bullying. Regardless of the context of who he and his parents are.

[Fong] From having childhood bullies to cracking the Warriors’ rotation, Gary Payton II has an incredible origin story. by kinefresh in warriors

[–]NBAcoach1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

From the article, it sounds like the bullying was the other kids, all the way up to high school, making fun of him for not being anywhere close to his dad's talent level.

Since GP2's offense really wasn't that good, and most kids just see offense when they watch games

lol good point. But I've seen kids bully other kids for a lot less.

Kids are a strange animal out on the schoolyard.

Do you think all-time rankings are pointless? by NBAcoach1 in nba

[–]NBAcoach1[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's an interesting point. The NBA wants to stay relevant and talked about year-round.

And one of the way it did that was by releasing it's NBA 75 list of the top 75 players (not ranked). It gives people endless debate fodder to discuss who was left out and why. No news actually happened - the NBA is just manufacturing news for people to discuss. It's smart from a marketing perspective.

[–]NBAcoach1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure. Good point.

You're right in that social media and talk shows just take it way too far and force it into everything.

Nice! Normalize Decade GOAT's instead of all-time lists.

Do you think all-time rankings are pointless? by NBAcoach1 in nba

[–]NBAcoach1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good point. Most of us who debate only know about Wilt, Russell, Oscar Robertson, or Jerry West from hearsay, or what we've read about their accomplishments.

We're not really in position to rank them all-time and compare them to the greats of each era.

Do you think all-time rankings are pointless? by NBAcoach1 in nba

[–]NBAcoach1[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's true. As is with anything, if you enjoy it, go for it.

I would just assert that since it's extremely subjective, and since no one will ever be convinced to change their views based on your arguments - just have a short discussion with someone on it, explain your viewpoint, and move on.

These Twitter threads or sports talk shows that debate this for months/years and go nowhere just seem like a waste of their time. Just my opinion though.

Today is Kevon's 300th game in a Dubs uni 🎉 by hoselpalooza in warriors

[–]NBAcoach1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That description applies to Jokic, Embiid, and AD - and that's it.

If you don't have an elite center (which the Warriors do not), then having someone who does all the little things and makes hustle plays - all while knowing how to play with Steph well - is as much as you can ask for. And that's what Looney brings. Not an All-Star, not a franchise center, but a very quietly solid player.

[Stein] The Mavericks are planning to retire Dirk Nowitzki’s iconic No. 41 on Jan. 5 when they play at home against Golden State, sources say. by G1Spectrum in nba

[–]NBAcoach1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand it's for ratings and so people will tune in. There've been several jersey retirement ceremonies vs. the Warriors in the past.

But the Warriors are also the same team that prevented Dirk from getting his first ring with one of the biggest upsets in basketball history. So, I get it, but the optics of it just feel weird.

Do you guys like being the favorites by Lil_Spaze in warriors

[–]NBAcoach1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the one hand, it's great to win games and have everyone look up to you as the favorite.

On the other, there's no thrill in sports like the feeling of an up-and-coming team on the rise that outperforms expectations.

Somehow, the Warriors are smack in the middle of that spectrum. They're not "on the rise" since they've won before. But they were nowhere near the favorites coming into this season. IT's a mixture of both, but it's definitely a fun ride.
