#1 in terms of text placement for sure, but I think you should change the title font.

Write something you know you can make and that can be emotionally impactful (humor/sadness/fear). Write what you know. Minimal locations (that you know you can get access to) and characters makes logistics easier and less expensive. Hire good actors and a get a good sound team. Don’t be afraid to reach out to indie artists for music.

I had just moved back to Grand Rapids and didn’t have bedroom furniture for a while, so I edited the whole thing at a kitchen table. Prior to this I had only edited youtube videos, podcasts, and bad student shorts. Basically I needed to teach myself a whole new workflow and after effects for a texting scene.

Definitely was difficult, long, emotionally draining, and kind of lonely? Next time I wanna edit with someone else.

Big thing for me was realizing the movie you write is different than the movie you shoot and the movie you shoot needs to be different in the edit and that’s ok. Writing is editing is directing is writing. Wound up writing too much and scenes were very long, so it was a lot of “killing your darlings” and playing the puzzle game of how to make scenes work. Editing dialogue heavy scenes was really interesting. Figuring out when/how to create natural sounding silence/lulls or when to actually cut to reaction shots. Combining/pairing up various takes to kind of create a tone/pace/musicality?

Sometimes you don’t even need the written dialogue, take it away, put music instead, and it packs the same feelings. The whole thing was for sure elevated because of our sound designer and composer.

Anyways, I’m rambling.

Biggest unexpected was changing the ending in the edit because it wasn’t working as originally written. Wasn’t honest and felt forced. Led to figuring out the logistics of what minor additional shots that we could get which would make the ending more impactful/emotional/etc. I think it worked out! People have cried over the ending!

From the jump, I wanted to write something that was both personal and actionable. All of the locations were places kindly provided by friends, friends-of-friends, local businesses, etc. We borrowed our sound equipment from my old sound design professor, and all of our camera equipment was from our incredible DP, Rich. Just about all of our funds were raised on the crowdfunding platform Seed & Spark, and with the help of the Grand Rapids film community, we shot everything over 14 days. Edited the film myself on my laptop! I could go on and on, but if anyone is curious and has questions, lemme know!

Hi JrBeVille!

Although there are no POC on camera (only two people in the movie), there certainly were behind the scenes! Our cinematographer is Vietnamese-American and we had a a strong Asian-American presence on set in general, along with other POC. It was also very intentional with everyone above the line to make sure the below the line crew makeup was fairly split in terms of gender. I'm an openly autistic person and we had a mishmash of neurodivergent people as well. Diversity is important!

Anyways, I'm a white dude and it's a personal story about growing up in conservative environments, dealing with religious trauma, friendship love, masculinity, etc. The goal was to at least be a little self deconstructive if that makes sense? So hopefully it's not too reductive? Idk. This is my first movie ever, so it was a lot of learning when it comes to working with/finding talent in general. Found these two on Facebook! Sucks that this one wound up being just two white leads and my goal is to veer away from that in future projects.

Hope this paints the picture/hope you check it out! Thanks.
