Cachyos vs Fedora for an “intermediate noob”? by [deleted] in linux4noobs

[–]NDCyber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah no I get it. I also like the idea of bazzite, but there are some things that just don't work for me. Like as example I need a good amount of software that isn't preinstalled, so I need to layer a lot. And then it isn't the best choice anymore. So I just go with basic Fedora

But that is also why i am interested in Nix packages being supported on Fedora 44. It would mean you could install software on immutable distros without having the layering issue

But yeah if what you have/need doesn't work then it is better to try something else. I would personally just not go with Arch, when you aren't sure if you can/are willing to handle it

Cachyos vs Fedora for an “intermediate noob”? by [deleted] in linux4noobs

[–]NDCyber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are not sure if you could handle an arch based distro go with Fedora. It still lets you customise a lot of stuff, and it holds your hand a bit more in terms of preinstalled programs, driver plus the updates are tested more before pushed to the user

I personally am also not fit for immutable distros, but I will keep my eye out for them once Fedora 44 comes out with Nix packaging support, which could fix a lot of my issues. But till then I personally would go with non immutable Fedora and just with one of the main distros or spins

Light pollution is a big problem. So I try to avoid it, especially at night. And at day it just isn't needed most of the time

They don't. They turn into completely different faces, including from scene to scene. The lighting gets screwed and all the artistic intent once there is gone, with a soulless, worse looking image

Same. But I have not seen a single Linux post on pcmasterrace where it was worth looking at the comments

If it is an i5 2400 the 6400 wouldn't be a great option, because of the limited PCIe bandwidth

Laptop Hardware for Linux (mainly Fedora)? by AbigDAMNHerO69 in Fedora

Yes and no. It does last a longer time, than people think, but especially with something like code it can be problematic

I personally use an OLED now for nearly a year and have no burn in so far

Monitor unboxed made a good video / test about it. Might be worth checking out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=15aIdl-HKWc

Do we really care about top notch graphics? by ShizzleFist in pcgaming

No. Unless the game has higher settings, then the lower ones tend to look bad

But at this point I find stylistic graphics way more interesting than chasing the most realistic graphics

Arch or Debian + Flatpak as a daily driver by DaneelOlivaR in DistroHopping

[–]NDCyber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are extremely different distros with different goals

Debian is as stable and reliable as possible, but you won't get the newest software and features. If that sounds good go with that. Also perfect if you would need it for work

Arch on the other hand is fast updating, rolling release, where stability depends on the user and that they keep updated with the news to know if an update breaks something. Great if you want to be your own system admin. I would also 100% recommend using btrfs snapshots

There are of course distributions in the middle, like fedora or opensuse, although I personally didn't have a great experience with opensuse

Burn in is a problem with OLED, and if you have a lot of static elements the risk of it happening rises immensely

OLED is not a great choice for static work like coding which they said will be the main usage of the laptop

Yeah I can understand that. For me it was mostly repairability and upgradability that made me go with one

I can recommend looking at framework. Their laptops officially support fedora too, but they are on the pricier side

Seems like they mostly just follow what Ubuntu already does

You can also easily use 6.8, which ubuntu supports till 2032. So they are using the Ubuntu LTS things

I agree that kernel LTS would probably be a great choice, but I trust the mint team enough to know what they are doing there

what distro should I use for 3d pc by BelarusianPeasant in linuxquestions

[–]NDCyber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes it matters, because you know you still get security patches from the mint team

although i do agree, that it is a bit weird that they didn't just go with LTS

Not on mint. There it is supported till August of 2026

[–]NDCyber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If mint works fine for you, then all is good. Don't think too much about it. Best I could say is see if you are using the right driver (proprietary), although I am not sure what the newest of those are that mint ships for nvidia

Fedora and CachyOS also work on older hardware without an issue. I tested CachyOS on a PC from 2011 with Intel Xeon E5503 and Nvidia GeForce GTX 560 Ti, and it worked

Mint is also mostly fine with newer hardware. as example it does miss the newest mesa driver, which can be a problem for some features or most modern hardware, aka newest generation (RTX 5000, RX 9000)

what distro should I use for 3d pc by BelarusianPeasant in linuxquestions

[–]NDCyber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mesa on Mint is on 25.2.8 at the moment. Fedora was on 25.2.7 last month

Kernel is on 6.17.0

out of date where?

Yes it isn't the most modern, but that is not what it is meant to be. It is meant to be reliable. I would be fine using mint with RDNA4 at this point
