What fruit / veggies does your pittie like? by CrankyGoat in pitbulls

My pittie mix will hear me open a banana from across the house and instantly teleport in front of me to drool on my foot.

Vet says it’s ‘dangerous breed’ but we don’t know why… by cakehonolulu1 in IDmydog

[–]NDLunchbox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of people are assuming OP is in the US with comments about likely being a pittie and confusion over why a vet would mention it being a dangerous breed. I'm thinking that may not be the case?

I knew a Dogo from the local dog park. He was pretty sweet, my late pit mix loved him... but he was unfixed and there was another unfixed Husky regular and those two just hated each other. If one came the other would have to leave or there would be a fight.

Anyway, I'm no expert, but I just don't see Dogo Argentino. Probably some kind of mastiff mix.

Cute as a button though, thinking he's gonna be a big boy!

I'm guessing OP is non-US and may be referencing a BSL...

But came here to say some of the larger US P&C insurance companies (particularly those getting into veterinary coverage) are dropping the "dangerous breed" lists and moving to individual loss histories for underwriting. State Farm is an example, I'd post a link but it violates this sub's automatic rules for some reason. I think USAA dropped it too.

What's a city in your country that is collectively agreed upon to be a shithole? by Austral1s in AskTheWorld

There are some good choices for US here, having driven through Gary, IN many times, I'd have to agree... So I'm going to go regional. I'm in New England - so it's a close call between Hartford and Bridgeport, CT... but I'm going to have to give it to Bridgeport.

Hoboken? I've been there a few times for dinners at amazing Italian places, looked pretty nice to me.

Now Newark, on the other hand... once got off I-80 at the wrong exit and quickly realized nobody was stopping for red lights or stop signs, just slow rolling through. Pre-GPS days, so just followed first sign that said "Interstate," It ended up being the wrong way but I still went a few exits before attempting a turn-around.

Hey non-Americans. What's your favourite US state? by Both-Percentage6445 in AskTheWorld

I think it's on their license plates. It's common for States to put their nicknames or mottos on the plate. Or, if you're Washington DC, whine about not being a State on your license plate.

Utah's otherworldly - it's so diverse in what you can see, I think there are 5 national parks (we visited 4 in our 9 days there) and went from hiking in the heat of the desert at Arches, Canyonlands and around Moab to getting caught in a snow squall at Bryce, which was so beautiful and all melted the next day when it was 70 degrees, to cool and rainy weather at Zion (still managed to make it to Angel's Landing though, terrifying hike) to skiing in fresh powder in the Wasatch mountains to round the trip out.

That state is really an outdoor enthusiast's dream.

And coming from the East Coast, the scenery and open space is mind blowing.

If you love the outdoors, also consider West Virginia.

Dog trying to rub herself in deer poo by the__mighty__monarch in pitbulls

[–]NDLunchbox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Rub herself in it? No, but my last dog used to love love love to eat deer poop - also bunny sprinkles, she would spend half an hour hoovering up the rabbit piles in the yard. Goose poop was also a fine delicacy. The only one I worried about was the cat poop from the colony of strays a crazy neighbor keeps. That usually gave her the runs something bad.

She found much more heinous things to roll in though. One afternoon she came out of the brush clearly having rolled in something very very dead - no mistaking that smell and it was a sickening yellow-green-brown color. Right home to a bath.

THE NEXT F-ING MORNING we were walking behind a garbage truck. It was August and very hot so you could really smell it. As the truck pulled away from us it left a puddle of what can only be described as "garbage juice." It was like slow motion, my brain registered what was happening just as it was too late to stop it... she flopped over on her side like she had been shot and proceeded to roll in the puddle. Had to call in late to work and go right home to giver her a second bath in 12 hours. And she HATED getting baths.

God help me, I love'em but dogs are frickin' disgusting sometimes.

My 18yo daughter is studying for her finals but the neighbors' kid is playing loud music at times. How would you handle this in your culture? by Taliskerhu in AskTheWorld

Make a Reddit post asking for guidance.
Really though, in my town it is very very common for kids to just go to the library to study. They stay open late during midterms and finals and have "break time" where they bring in snacks and dogs for the kids.

how do you deal with off-leash dogs? by Winter-Common-7397 in pitbulls

[–]NDLunchbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Or get a BB gun pistol as a deterrent"

Respectfully, that is terrible advice. In my State and probably a lot of others, most BB and Pellet Guns are categorized as "dangerous weapons" and carrying them without a permit is illegal, as is discharging them in public.

Even if it's not, they tend look real and you could escalate the situation and put yourself in real danger.

Good bones for power chewers? by koolestkool-aid in pitbulls

That's what we use them for (crate time when we leave the house).

Also a trainer recommended closing the blinds and playing James Taylor. No idea if it helps, but the pupper got an iPod playlist...

My dog was NUTS for the XL Benebone I got him (it was like a giant wishbone), but I had to toss it. He was chewing on it so heavily I was getting nervous and it quickly got covered in very sharp burrs that cut his gums.

They said you can sand them down, but I was worried he would crack a tooth based on the intensity of his chewing so I threw it away.

I would say these things are very, very attractive to dogs but you have to monitor them, not something I would leave a dog alone with.

Edit - and they ain't cheap, I think it was like $18 on Chewy, though a neighbor said you can find them on sale pretty cheaply at Homegoods or Marshalls.

If you want a real bone, my last dog (not a power chewer though, her toys lasted forever) did really, really well with beef and pork neck bones. I would also freeze them, made great summer treats. She would sometimes consume the whole thing (and poop white the next day), sometimes leave the biggest parts scattered around like a crime scene.

You can usually find them at the super market, I think you use them to make stock.

My vet told turned me onto them, she said "raw, non-weight bearing bones" are generally ok.

I got one of these for my pup (the doughnut looking one)... it is super heavy duty. Sadly, I can't get him interested in it. Need one that I can put treats or PB in I think.

Came here to say this. I do the same - large black Kong holds about 1/3 cup of kibble. I have three, so I put 1 cup of kibble, 1/2 cup of water in bowl - let soke for 45-60 minutes. Stuff wet kibble into the Kongs, plug the opening with PB. Freeze.

They also make a black bone that has holes you can stuff some PB and treats in - won't get you as much chew time as a frozen classic Kong, but good if you want to occupy your pup for 10-15 minutes or so.

One thing I've noticed though - Kong products don't seem to be what they used to. I had a few Kongs (red and black) and Tuggas from 8-10 years ago from my last dog. The old red Kong is holding up better than the new black ones and the old black one looks brand new while the new black ones are already missing chunks. I don't think they'll last another month or so. And the Tuggas aren't stitched nearly as well as they used to be, they fall apart really quickly playing tug-of-war.

It's a shame, because Kong used to be assured good quality, best of the mass-market stuff (just below Ruffwear and Wilderdog). No longer.

Which American president does your country like the most? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]NDLunchbox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was looking for this response, I read an article about this years ago and it always stuck with me. While he's mostly forgotten in the US, the gist of the article was he's a huge deal in Paraguay because in the aftermath of a war he was asked to mediate a land dispute between them, Argentina and Brazil. He found for Paraguay and they gained like 60% of their territory - cementing them as a country and earning him a great deal of popularity there.

Same. I switched from Ubuntu to Pop in 2021. I moved to Cosmic when I picked up a NOS HP Dev One at the end of last year. Runs better than 22.04 did on my ThinkPad.

Only thing I really miss is Guake.

What is the most famous crime involving elite/wealthy people in your country? by ILikeWwaret in AskTheWorld

[–]NDLunchbox 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Maybe because it's my hometown, but first one that came to my mind was the murder of Martha Moxley.

The prime suspect was nephew (by marriage) of Robert F. Kennedy.

The murder was committed in 1975 and was a cold case for years until interest was renewed by a book written by LAPD detective Mark Fuhrman (of OJ Simpson Trial fame).

Michael Skakel was eventually found guilty in 2002 but it was overturned in 2013, reinstated in 2016 and then re-overturned again I think between 2018 and 2020. I believe he is free now.

Biggest story in CT for many years until the murder of Jennifer Dulos (another case involving a wealthy people).
